As pharmacy and medicine students with science backgrounds, our minds have been ingrained to think methodologically and objectively. We have been taught to quantify, categorize and systematize. However, at times such a detail-oriented focus can result in loss of sight of the bigger picture. Over the past few weeks, this became most apparent to us while working on our innovation project at the Baycrest Centre for Learning, Research and Innovation. Our assignment was to create and evaluate an educational game to instruct health care professionals in long-term care. This meant applying the concept of gamification: the use of game thinking and game mechanics in a non-game context.
