Project Avodah
At the beginning of 2015, AJAS began an initiative called Project Avodah with the goal of answering the question "What does it mean to be a Jewish Organization Providing Eldercare Services"?

The final phase of Project Avodah included sending backpacks filled with school supplies to poor Ethiopian school children in Israel. By including the residents in the process of packing the bags, we remember that one is never too old to contribute or give back. With the help of our member communities, we were able to exceed our goal of 350 backpacks by sending over 450 backpacks!

Thank you to the all the communities who helped with this project. Rob Goldstein, CEO of Menorah Manor, was in Israel at the time and was kind enough to attend the distribution to the school children. Thanks also to Yaron Raz, our member at Beit Avraham in Haifa, Israel for coordinating and presenting the bags to the children. See the photos below and then head over to our Facebook page to see many more!

It is not what we did that makes our mission unique...it is why we did it. Our Jewish mission and culture influences everyone we serve.

FROM THE USA, WITH LOVE, TO ETHIOPIAN CHILDREN:

A generous donation from America: Jewish nursing homes from the united states and Canada (AJAS) donated hundreds of backpacks filled with school supplies to Ethiopian school children residing in Haifa.

This was the initiative of Don Shulman, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Jewish Aging Services. AJAS has purchased the backpacks, then distributed them to nursing homes both in the USA and Canada, to be filled by their residents with items purchased with their own money: notebooks, pens, pencils et cetera.

All the bags were then sent to BEIT AVRAHAM, THE SEPHARDIC HOME FOR THE AGED OF THE JEWISH SEPHARDIC CONGREGATION HAIFA, which participated in this operation alongside with the HAIFA BOSTON CONNECTION and the JEWISH SEPHARADIC CONGREGATION HAIFA.

In a ceremony which took place at BEIT MERBACH in KIRYAT HAIM, the backpacks were presented to the children by Yaron Raz, Executive director of BEIT AVRAHAM and by Rob Goldstein, Chief Executive Officer, Menorah Manor.
