October 2016

The major news for October, 2016, is the arrival of the cover for my new Foxglove Corners book, Down a Dark Path, created by Wings artist, Trisha Fitzgerald.

Those who have read The Mists of Huron Court know that Huron Court is a winding, twisting road that on occasion sends the unwary traveler back in time, often into another season. Trisha captured this idea with perfect images that depict autumn and winter. The pink Victorian is there, in a smaller form, and Jennet's collie, Misty, graces the left hand corner. Not since Treasure at Trail's End has a cover captured the essence of my story so well.

Needless to say, it's going to be framed, as was the cover for The Mists of Huron Court.

I've been making progress on The Crying Collie which is almost certainly going to be retitled. People often ask me what my next book is going to be. When I tell them the title, they ask if it's going to be sad, if something terrible is going to happen to the collie.

For now, The Crying Collie will be a working title while I try to come up with another one. Those familiar with my books know that I may write about a collie in peril, but the collie is always rescued. After all, Jennet is a member of the Collie Rescue League. Many of us know the pain of losing a beloved dog, usually more than once. I don't want to write about this pain in one of my mysteries.

Just last night I finished a book in which a collie was a minor character adopted by the heroine after his owner died. As the story wound to an end, it seemed as if she was going to forget about the dog. I was relieved to find that I'd misjudged her.

What have died are the outside plants and the plants I had on the porch. Not being a fall gardener, by October my interest in watering them has vanished. Also, the porch floor is under construction, a project which will be wound up next week. (I hope.) I'm only keeping one philodendron from the porch on a kitchen shelf.

I've stopped looking for garden magic. My foxglove bloomed again, which is a first for me. My baby lilac bush is thriving. But even the tall goldenrod are drooping from the heavy rain we had last week. It's time to say goodbye. Time for flannel sheets and boots and pumpkins.

I'm still having trouble off and on with my new Kindle. When I order a book, it appears on the first page, and I'm able to access it. Not so for books I've ordered in the past but haven't read. That'll be my next minor project. I wonder if I'm the only one who has trouble with electronics?

I love my Kindle though and have over 500 books stored on it.

I've been reading a variety of books. October is Halloween month, so I'm choosing books with a Gothic flavor. Everything I've read this month has been good but nothing so far is spectacular.

My friend Marja McGraw has published a new Sandi Webster mystery. Having a Wonderful Crime, Wish You Were Here is set in a new locale, Washington, a state with which Marja is familiar, having recently moved there from Arizona.

Sandi and her husband, Pete, take a long-delayed honeymoon and find themselves in the midst of a decade-old murder mystery. All the familiar characters are in the book, along with some fascinating new ones. I recommend it to Sandi Webster fans or anyone who likes a good mystery.

I hope all of my readers enjoy the beauty of the fall and the many activities and joys that October brings.
