Principal's Message
Another Great Week here at Groveport Elementary!

We had our 2nd Nine Week's Awards Assembly (grades 3 -5) on January 27th.  Students were awarded for Good Conduct, Perfect Attendance, Hard Worker, A/B Honor Roll, All A Honor Roll, and Teacher's Choice.  We are very proud of the students and want them to continue to come to school everyday ready to learn.  Please ask your child about the Assembly and their awards and encourage them to continue to do their best!

You should have received your child's report card.  If you haven't already, please make sure to sign and return the envelope, so we will have it for next nine weeks. Parent Teacher conferences are coming up and this is the perfect opportunity to meet with your child's teacher to discuss how they are doing this 1st half of the year.  Conferences will be held on February 4th from 4:00 - 7:15 and February 9th from 4:00 - 7:15.

Linking
the Classroom to Home:

Hands-on activities help students better understand math concepts.  Here are some activities to do at home to help your child with fractions.
  • Using measuring cups have your child pour one cup of water into a glass.  Then ask how many half-cups will it take to fill another glass? How many third cups? How many quarter cups?  You may try a similar activity with measuring spoons and sugar.
  • Make pancakes, cookies, or any family recipe and have your child help determine the amount of each ingredient needed to double or half the recipe.
  • Pizza night is a delicious opportunity to learn about fractions!  Count the number of equal size slices that make up one whole pizza, half pizza, and quarter pizza.  If everyone has the same number of pieces, what fraction of the pizza does each person have?
Can you think of other hands-on fraction activities to do at home?  You may want to share these with your child's teacher.
Positive Conduct Referrals

At times teachers have to write students up for negative behavior that is beyond what can be handled in the classroom.  Instead of only doing office referrals for negative behaviors, we decided to continue with  the positive write-ups we started last year. These Positive Conduct Referrals will be written for students who exhibit good behavior and are a role model to other students.  Miss Goldman has referred Gavin because he is a wonderful asset to the class. He is a kind and generous friend, a wonderful helper, and comes to school eager to learn daily.  Gavin has more than doubled his sight words this 9 weeks!  Miss Goldman has also "written up" Olivia for giving everything she does 100% effort. She is a wonderful helper to both teachers and friends. She too has improved academically this nine weeks going from 14 to 71 sight words and increasing her counting from 29 to 100.

Congratulations Gavin and Olivia- Keep it up!
Music with the Pops!
All 3rd and 4th graders will be involved in a concert at our school on February 9th.  They will be singing Pop Music through the decades!  Please have your child bring in a white t shirt to be decorated in Art class by January 29th!  The students will wear their decorated t-shirts for the concert.  All students will need to arrive at the school at 6:50 for the concert to begin at 7:00.  This is the same evening as Book Fair, Art Show and Parent Teacher Conferences.  Please come and join us for a fun filled evening with the Arts!

Gold Slips
Gold Slips are given to students by staff members for many reasons. January Gold Slips will be given for showing the character trait of Responsibility.  Students can demonstrate this trait by being in charge of what they say and do, being accountable for their own learning, and thinking before acting. Students come to the office and put their gold slip in our Treasure Box. Every Friday, Mrs. Bray picks 15 -20 Gold Slips from the Treasure Box and calls those students to the office for a prize. Gold Slip Winners for January 22nd - Faith Murphy-Pickett, Sara Combs, Sophie Hawkins, Isabela Zamarripa, Abigail Cline, Karma Davis, Jason McDonald, Brenden Bennett, Lillian Kirk, Isaiah Hinkle, Isabella Molette, Andrew Blackford, Joseph Casserly, Dillon Noland, Clifford Billingsley, Ashton Barrett, and Daniel Hazzard - Congratulations!
