Math Adoption
I wanted to let parents know our district will be adopting a new Math Series for next year. A committee of teachers will be reviewing the materials and piloting them this year, but we wanted to provide parents an opportunity to also be involved and provide feedback. You are invited to our High School on February 24th from 5 to 6 to review the selections, as well as ask questions about the process and materials.
Columbus Metropolitan Library Card

Did you know your child can get 2 library cards?

1. Your child can sign up for a regular CML library card with your signature.
2. Your child can sign up for a Kids Card for ages 17 and under.

With a Kids Card Kids Can
  • Check out or reserve five books at a time
  • Not worry about overdue fines - there are no fines for the Kids Card
  • Use any of CML's Homework Help Centers
  • Use CML computers and research tools through columbuslibrary.org

Linking the Classroom to Home:

The more senses students experience when learning, the more likely it is that they will understand and internalize information and concepts.  This week we are concluding the Math-a-Thon, however, it is important for your child to continue to practice their facts.  Below are some ideas to reinforce math facts using senses while practicing:
  • Hearing information is one way to better understand information.  Encourage your student to say math facts aloud.  You may even record your student with a cell phone or I-Pad then play it back for him/her to here.
  • Reciting facts to a tune or rhythm is another strategy to reinforce math facts.
  • Drawing pictures may also be beneficial.  Have your child draw a picture to represent math facts they are struggling with on index cards.
  • Hands-on experiences increase learning as well.  Students can show math facts by manipulating blocks, coins, crackers, cereal (for example, five groups of three Cheerios represents 5 x 3).  They may also enjoy writing math facts in shaving cream or in sand or sugar on a cookie sheet.
Ask your child's teacher for more ideas to use senses to increase understanding.

Gold Slips
Gold Slips are given to students by staff members for many reasons. January Gold Slips will be given for showing the character trait of Responsibility.  Students can demonstrate this trait by being in charge of what they say and do, being accountable for their own learning, and thinking before acting. Students come to the office and put their gold slip in our Treasure Box. Every Friday, Mrs. Bray picks 15 -20 Gold Slips from the Treasure Box and calls those students to the office for a prize. Gold Slip Winners for January 8th - Damion Konot, Kennedy-Simone Rufus, Mariyah Crawford, Reagan Whitesel, Nailee Grubb, Sidi Diawara, Kathleen Slaby, Makenzie Parrett, Josiah Hinkle, Dylan Genton, Nataliegh Ford, Rebecca Snyder, Matt Lourangphixay, Veda Hicks, Samantha Wolfe, and Soumphonphakdy - Congratulations!
