Principal's Message
Happy New Year!

Welcome back staff and students.  The first semester is almost complete and I look forward to a successful 2nd semester and 2016.  Students tend to really take off and progress in their learning the 3rd nine weeks of school.  Please continue to partner with us to ensure your child meets or exceeds their growth targets. Here are some ideas that you can do to help your child.

1. Make sure your child is in school and on time each day.
2. Check their folders and sign agenda books.
3. Make sure they are completing homework and reading nightly.
4. Reward their efforts.
5. Stay positive and be involved.

As a staff we are always talking about meeting or exceeding growth targets.  We encourage the students to work hard each day and we appreciate all the support from the parents. We feel very fortunate to have such wonderful families at Groveport Elementary, who support the children and the staff. We look forward to continuing our partnership in 2016! If you have questions, please contact me or your child's teacher.
Friendly Reminders

Student Drop Off - Students should not be dropped off before 8:40 AM.  We don't have supervision before this time and students will be outside in the cold temperatures. Also, the oval in the front is for the buses. All drop offs must be in front of the school by the fence or on the side of the school.

Car Rider Pick-up - Please continue to use Middle School Central's parking lot.  Students will be walked out to the end of the drive at 3:35.  The weather is going to be very cold the next couple months, but please continue to get out of your car and meet your child.  Also, please follow the pick-up procedures, follow the flow of traffic around the parking lot and do not cut in line.  This is so we can keep all the students safe.

Visitor Badges - When you visit the building, you must show proper ID to enter the building.  Staff and students CANNOT open the door for you. You must be buzzed in by someone in the office after you show your ID.  Once you are buzzed in, go directly to office and sign in and get a visitor badge. Again, this is to ensure the safety of all the students.

Recess - It looks like we will have indoor recess for the next several weeks, but just in case the temperature is 25 degrees or above, please make sure your child wears a coat, hat and gloves. We have activities and games for indoor recess, so we ask that your child not bring in toys from home unless the teacher has given specific permission.  We can't be responsible for lost or stolen property.

Thank you so much for your understanding and cooperation!

Linking the Classroom to Home:

The beginning of a new year provides relevant opportunities to learn about the calendar and the measurement of time.  See the activities below to do at home with your student to reinforce these concepts.
  • Primary students may review counting, days of the week, months of the year and writing the date both in numbers and words correctly, such as 1/4/16 or January 4, 2016.
  • Intermediate students may compare and contrast year, decade, score, century and millennium. Make a Venn Diagram (your student will know what this is!) then choose two of the time periods listed and complete the graphic organizer with similarities and differences.
  • Determine elapsed time.  For example, "Two weeks from today will be what date?" or, "If you begin reading an 85 page book today and read 10 pages each day, when will you finish the book?"  You and your child may also create your own word problems to solve.
  • Research Leap Year (2016 is a Leap Year!) to learn about this calendar occurrence.
  • Have your child complete his/her own calendar and include important dates and upcoming events.

Gold Slips
Gold Slips are given to students by staff members for many reasons. January Gold Slips will be given for showing the character trait of Responsibility.  Students can demonstrate this trait by being in charge of what they say and do, being accountable for their own learning, and thinking before acting. Students come to the office and put their gold slip in our Treasure Box. Every Friday, Mrs. Bray picks 15 -20 Gold Slips from the Treasure Box and calls those students to the office for a prize.
