WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

Principal's Message
Thank you to all the Parents and Guardians who attended conferences this past Tuesday and Thursday.  We really appreciate your support!  Also, thank you teachers for scheduling, meeting, and working together with the parents to help our students meet or exceed their growth targets.

Our students will be taking many assessments from now until the end of the year.  I've added a section to this newsletter about testing to help keep you informed about the assessments your child will be participating in this year.

Focus on Learning

Mrs. Geisler's 3rd grade students working on multiplication using
candy heart manipulatives to solve problems involving arrays.

5th graders in Mrs. Chandler's class are working on justifying
and explaining their answers when solving math problems involving
fractions with unlike denominators and mixed numbers.

Assessment Information

PARCC
Students in grades 3 - 5 will be taking the PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) in Reading and Math. These tests are computer-based, and use interactive questions to determine whether students have mastered the fundamentals, as well as higher-order skills using critical thinking, problem-solving, and analyzing sources to write arguments and informational essays - skills not easily assessed by traditional multiple-choice tests. Students will be taking the Performance Based Assessments in February/March (schedule will be in the newsletter next week) and the End-of-Year Assessments in April/May.  There are practice tests and sample questions students and families can check out on the PARCC website.  I encourage parents to take a look at these practice items.  Please go to http://practice.parcc.testnav.com at the top of the website choose Test Preparation.  The drop down menu has sample items, tutorials, and practice tests.

State Developed Assessments - Science and Social Studies
In addition to the online Reading and Math assessments students in grades 4 will be taking the Social Studies test and students in grades 5 will take the Science test.  These tests will also be given twice a year - March and May.  If you have a child in 4th or 5th grade, I encourage you to also check out these practice tests at http://oh.portal.airast.org/ocba/students-and-familiies/

All of our teachers were taking the practice tests and learning how
to administer these new online tests at the Waiver Day on Wednesday!

NAEP
Randomly selected 4th grade students will be taking the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) on February 24th.  If your child was selected, you received a letter back in December. This assessment monitors what U.S. students know and can do in key subject areas at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.  Since 1969, NAEP has provided U.S. educators and the public with reliable profiles of student achievement.
Artist of the Week

Josie Whitesel

In this project, our 1st graders were introduced to Jim Dine who is an artist out of Cincinnati.  He makes colorful paintings about everyday life.  The students also learned about symmetry.  We began by making a monoprint using three colors.  Next, we colored the background to mimic Jim Dine's patchwork in his art.  Josie Whitesel was selected by Mrs. Sperk for her beautiful project. Josie is a 1st grade student in Mrs. Anderson's class. She has been attending Groveport Elementary since kindergarten.  She has two older sisters, Reagan who is in 4th grade and Sammie who is in 3rd grade.  She enjoys swimming, gymnastics and dancing.  Her favorite type of art is collage.  She likes to make monkeys.   Congratulations Josie for being our Artist of the Week!
Positive Conduct Referrals

At times teachers have to write students up for negative behavior that is beyond what can be handled in the classroom.  This year instead of only doing office referrals for negative behaviors, we decided to also include positive write-ups. These Positive Conduct Referrals will be written for students who exhibit good behavior and are a role model to other students.  Charlie Viton and Eniaja Muse were selected by their teacher, Mrs. Garn, for being awesome students. Mrs. Garn wrote that Eniaja always tries her best, comes to school prepared, and helps others stay on task. Charlie was "written-up" for always putting forth effort, helping keep the classroom clean, staying on task and being prepared.Congratulations Eniaja and Charlie - Keep it up!!

Invention Convention

It's that time of year! Inventors who are interested in competing in the school district's annual Invention Convention need to start thinking about their ideas and/or inventions.  Students who are interested in competing need to visit www.inventionconvention.org for basic guidelines, rules, and other pertinent information. If any teacher would like more information concerning Invention Convention, please contact [email protected].
Gold Slips
Gold Slips are given to students by staff members for many reasons. February Gold Slips will be given for showing the character trait of caring.  Students can demonstrate this characteristic by being kind, compassionate, thankful, forgiving, and helpful. Students come to the office and put their gold slip in our Treasure Box. Every Friday, the Principal picks 15 -20 Gold Slips from the Treasure Box and calls those students to the office for a prize. Gold Slip winners from February 6th -
