Stay Focused - 1 Week to Go

The last day of school before winter break is Friday, December 19th (45 minute early dismissal). We have 1 week before break and students will still be receiving quality instruction. Please talk with your child about the importance of giving their best effort each day. After break there is much more for your child to learn and work towards. We will be pushing your child to achieve as much as they can every single day. Let's work hard , stay focused, and finish strong!

Strategies for Reading Longer Words

School will be out for a full two weeks, but that doesn't mean students shouldn't be reading. It is very important to read with your child nightly or have them read and complete their reading log even when school isn't in session.  Here are a few strategies to use when your child struggles reading longer words.

- Look for the parts you know at the beginning of the word (un-, re-, pre-, mis-, ex-, non-).

- Look for the parts you know at the end of the word (-ly, -tion, -ful, -less, -er, -ment, -ing).

- Divide the word into syllables (kit-ten, stu-dent, nap-kin, can-dle, fro-zen, waf-fle).

- Look for vowel patterns you know (ai, ee, ea, igh, oa, ar, au, oi, oo, ow, ou).

- Make your best guess.  Does it sound right? Does it make sense? If not, re-read and try again.

Artist of the Week

Marley Sheehan

In this project, our kindergarten students continued practicing lines and shapes.  We started by tracing our hands four times.  Next, we colored the background a different color and then added one type of line to each hand.  Finally, we painted over our hands.  Marley Sheehan was selected by Mrs. Sperk for her wonderful project.  Marley is a kindergarten student in Mrs. Myers' class. She has two younger sisters, Anna who is 3 years old and June who is 9 months old.  Marley enjoys gymnastics, dancing, singing, coloring and drawing.  She likes to draw flowers and pictures of her sisters.  She likes using markers best and her favorite color is purple. Congratulations Marley for being our Artist of the Week!
