HAPPY JULY 4TH!
2014
Kind words can make an otherwise ordinary day - or week - infinitely better.  It's true for each of us as we go about our daily lives and it's true for me as I represent the library in the community.  For those of you who have taken the time to tell us how much you love the new things the library is offering, thank you.  To the couple who told me about signing up for library cards so you could try our digital magazine service, you made my week.  Sincere compliments let us know that you notice what we're doing and provide an extra drop of motivation as we plan the next new thing.  It is our pleasure to serve you, and thanks for letting us know when our services have hit the mark.
~ Director Faith Brautigam

Travel Through Time
at KHCPL
If you've been to KHCPL recently, you've noticed our TARDISes, but might not realize why we have them.

We have them so YOU can have some fun at KHCPL AND have a chance to win some really cool stuff!

Here's how: Through July 26 YOU can participate in our TIME FOR LIBRARY FUN contest. There is a "Time and Relative Dimensions in Space," aka TARDIS, at KHCPL Main (220 N. Union St.) and KHCPL South (1755 E. Center Rd.). Each is different on the inside. In addition, there is a TARDIS tent shared between the Adventure II and Discovery II bookmobiles, and at KHCPL Russiaville, there is a TARDIS door front.

We invite and encourage YOU to stand inside or outside a TARDIS and take a creative selfie. Then post the selfie on KHCPL's Facebook page along with the following information:

*To what date (choose a specific day such as Sept. 17, 1787, or just a timeframe such as 3,000 B.C.) are you using the TARDIS to travel back or forward in time?

*Why did you choose the date?

*Who would you like to meet there?

*What would you like to do while there?

For example, perhaps you have a quilt made in 1870 by your great-great-grandmother, so you want to travel back in time to get to know her and learn about quilting as your great-great-grandmother sews. In that case, dress in 1870 attire or bring the quilt or a photo of your great-great-grandmother to hold up in the selfie with our TARDIS.

Get the picture? (Pun intended.)

Post the photo and information on our Facebook page and you'll be entered into weekly prize drawings for Doctor Who items.

We've had two winners already. Glorianna and Christie! (See photos below.)

Get all the details here HERE

AND DON'T FORGET there's another contest you can enter for a chance to win a Kindle from the Greater Kokomo Economic Development Alliance. Click HERE for all the details about the Business of Time Travel contest.

Slime a Librarian
Slime. It's green. It's ooey. It's gooey. And it's, well, sliiime!

The Kokomo-Howard County Public Library has two buckets of the slippery substance in storage just waiting to be thrown onto two of its librarians.

Two lucky kids will do just that on July 26.

In addition to achieving reading goals and having a chance to win prizes, this year two children who participate in the Summer Reading Club will win the chance to SLIME A LIBRARIAN!

After finishing the Summer Reading Club game board, thereby completing their reading goals, children up to fifth grade receive a ribbon, a Reading Is a Chain Reaction chain, a pass to Indiana Beach (while supplies last), and can enter to try to win a bicycle or a Kindle. But that's not all! They'll also be automatically entered into a contest to be the person who slimes Miss Nicole or the person who slimes Miss Amber, two of the Children's Services Department librarians at KHCPL Main.

"Fizz. Boom. Read. That's been the theme for the 2014 Summer Reading Club," said Nicole Porter, Coordinator of Children's Services. "Through all of our programs, kids have been learning about science, but we also hope they've learned how fun it is to read, learn, and explore the world around them at the library."

To entice children not only to participate but also to finish the Summer Reading Club program, Porter and Librarian Amber Sefton agreed to be slimed.

"It's a dirty job, but somebody's got to do it," Sefton said and laughed. "Actually, we know that if a child has great experiences at the library, he or she will grow up to be a teen and adult who uses the library. So it's definitely worth it to get a little slimy."

All KHCPL locations have been slimed to help promote the event, and you'll notice slime as the theme for the library's Haynes-Apperson Parade entry, too.

"Only two buckets of slime will be thrown, but we want the entire community to be a part of the fun and join us for the Reading Is a Chain Reaction parade," Porter said.

The festivities begin at 2 p.m. at KHCPL Main.

Kevin Gregory Weather Camp
Coming to KHCPL Main

The Kokomo-Howard County Public Library will host WRTV Channel 6's Kevin Gregory's Weather Camp from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30, at KHCPL Main, 220 N. Union St.

Meteorologist Kevin Gregory and other members of the WRTV 6 weather team take the Weather Camp on the road every summer. RTV6 staff members film their two-hour camp for ages 6-11 as they teach youngsters about Indiana weather, as well as the basics of TV broadcasting.

The Weather Camp is a free event at the library and will be held in the meeting rooms on the lower level.

Registration is required. Sign up at KHCPL Main or by calling 626.0830 starting Monday, July 7.

The name Gregory is synonymous with weather in Indianapolis. Kevin's father, Bob, worked for three decades at WTHR (Channel 13). Gregory admits that he learned a lot growing up by going to work with his father and observing his easy-going style and commitment to the community.

When Gregory is not forecasting the weather for RTV6, he is often in the community teaching the next generation about the weather. He has visited hundreds of elementary schools over the last 18 years and hosts Kevin's Weather Camp each July. Nearly 2,000 children have attended the camp since it began.

Gregory joined RTV6 in August 1989. He also worked at WCIA-TV in Champaign, Ill., and at WLFI-TV in Lafayette.

Gregory is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Purdue University, where he earned a degree in telecommunications. He also is a graduate of the Mississippi State Broadcast Meteorology program.

Gregory has earned the American Meteorological Society's Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) designation, granted to broadcast meteorologists who meet established criteria for scientific competence and effective communication skills in their weather presentations.

Gregory lives in Avon with his wife, Susan, and children Matt and Annie.
