FIELD NOTES
FEBRUARY 2016

Friends,

With the last day of AmeriCorps service for Cohort 5 less than a week away, our members are balancing tremendous pride in their accomplishments and a mix of excitement and apprehension for the future.  We hope you enjoy the snapshot below summarizing their great work over the last six months, and highlighting what they are getting ready to tackle as PowerCorpsPHL alumni.

Fellowships
Building partnerships and broadening the scope of career pathways.

The Career Services Department has worked hard to expand opportunities for PowerCorpsPHL members interested in signing up for a second term of service.

In Cohort 6, fifteen PowerCorpsPHL members will be AmeriCorps Fellows at eleven different sites. The fellowships, all with an environmental focus, are in many fields, including: culinary, community outreach, project management, land-care, and urban agriculture.  Congratulations and good luck to all Cohort 6 Fellows!

Urgency of Now Symposium
Julia Hillengas and Aaron Kirkland traveled to Hampton, VA.

PowerCorpsPHL staff Julia Hillengas and PowerCorpsPHL alumni Aaron Kirkland spoke on the importance of engaging young people in the solutions government crafts about the future at the Urgency of Now symposium.  Cities United organized the symposium held in Hampton, VA.  The event aimed to provide technical assistance and capacity building strategies in changing the narrative for black males from failure to hope.

Service Project Highlight
Cohort 5 finishes strong!

The Rec Hunters began their work at Kingsessing Recreation Center in late December of 2015.  The Rec Hunters needed a new hub and Kingsessing Recreation Center needed a makeover.  They painted the main entrance, the stage, six hallways, the computer room, and an office.

Assistant Crew Leader Pedro Soto said, "We're about about 80% of the way there.  This summer, the plan is to paint the front of the building.  Many after-school programs and community clubs use the stage."  The Rec Hunter's improvements rejuvenate Kingsessing Recreation Center as a community space.
