FIELD NOTES
JANUARY 2016

Friends,

With each new year comes reflection, resolution, and change.  In this first edition of Field Notes for 2016, we celebrate corps members and alumni accomplishments, anticipate our growth, and take a moment to thank our staff and champions.

Looking ahead, we are excited by everything 2016 has to offer - most especially the opportunity to grow in partnership with all of you.

Alumni Highlights
Shout-out to all our Alumni and congratulations on their next steps!

With four cohorts of PowerCorpsPHL graduates out there, we have lots to boast about in the alumni department. Don't miss our newly updated Alumni Highlights - and check back often as we are always excited to share the stories of our amazing graduates.

Pictured to the right is Paul Johnson, Cohort 2 member and Cohort 3 Assistant Crew Leader. Upon completing PowerCorpsPHL, Paul secured a career track employment opportunity with AKRF where he applies his Green Stormwater Infrastructure maintenance experience by day, while taking classes at CCP in the evening.

My Brother's Keeper Summit
PowerCorpsPHL shared their experiences with local and regional stakeholders.

PowerCorpsPHL Associate Crew Leader, Kalef Jones, was selected to address the My Brother's Keeper Philadelphia Summit on December 18th, held to mark the release of their 2015 Progress Report.  Kalef's words of inspiration and encouragement were met with a standing ovation.  Click HERE to hear his story.
Holiday Basketball Tournament
PowerCorpsPHL crews rang in the New Year with a spirit of friendly competition!

PowerCorpsPHL crews took a break from environmental service to organize a Holiday Basketball Tournament on New Year's Eve. It was an afternoon of "crew" vs. "crew" that yielded a championship game between the Waste Warriors and the Green Ambassadors.  Off the court, there was lots of food, hanging out and a good old fashion potato sack race.  Members also took time to share works of encouragement and appreciation with one another as they headed into 2016 focused on achieving big goals.

You can view more photos of the Tournament here.

Mayoral Transition
Farewell to our great Champion, Mayor Nutter, and a warm welcome to Mayor Kenney

Mayor Michael A. Nutter will forever be PowerCorpsPHL's founding champion.  We thank him for the unique vision and never-ending support needed to bring PowerCorpsPHL to life, and for the team of leaders across City government that he inspired to help us.  Looking forward, we are thrilled to be embraced by the Kenney administration, and to find a new home in the Office of Community Empowerment and Opportunity.
MLK Day of Service 2016
National Day of Service

PowerCorpsPHL celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day by contributing to service projects across the city.  Crews joined 5,000 volunteers recruited by Global Citizen at Girard College, 1,200 volunteers recruited by City Year at Bethune Elementary School, and dozens of community volunteers at Kingsessing Recreation Center.  At Girard College, PowerCorpsPHL had the privilege of hearing from from Governor Wolf, Mayor Kenney, Senator Casey, and public service hero Senator Harris Wofford.
