Congratulations to Cohorts 2 and 3!

On Thursday, October 23, we held our Graduation and Induction Ceremony in recognition of Cohort 2 members for their term of service and welcomed Cohort 3 by officially swearing them in as AmeriCorps members. We were honored to hear congratulatory remarks from Mayor Michael A. Nutter and Managing Director of the City of Philadelphia Richard Negrin.

Introducing our New Program Director

Welcome to our new Program Director, Toni Lemons!
We are excited to introduce our new Program Director to the team. Toni brings with her a holistic youth development background and joined us because, "Oftentimes we don't see opportunities where young people have a voice in what happens in and around them. I think it's important for them to be able to have a voice, whether that's through service, or through them actually being able to vocalize some of the impact things are having on them. I saw PowerCorpsPHL as a natural way to be able to provide that for young adults but also a way to help them to be part of sustaining our society. It's very important that you people are able to see how their environment impacts them, not only today, but how that'll impact their future, their children and generations that come behind them."

Love Your Park Day

On Saturday, November 15th, PowerCorpsPHL served at various parks throughout Philadelphia in recognition of Love Your Park Fall Service Day.
  • The Elements served at Carroll Park, removing debris and planting bulbs.
  • Water Inc. and H-Deuce served together at Cliveden Park, cleaning out rain gardens and removing invasive plants to restore sightlines in the park.
  • The Black Diamonds served at Wharton Square, removing debris and sweeping walkways.
  • The Green Enforcers served at McPherson Square, planing bulbs.
  • The Spades served at Mifflin Square with BuildOn, removing debris and planting for the spring.

Alumni Update

Congratulations to PowerCorpsPHL alumnus Osman, who is now working part-time as a maintenance technician with the environmental, planning and consulting firm, AKRF. In this position, he works on a team of two, maintaining and managing multiple green stormwater infrastructure sites around Philadelphia. He has quickly stepped into a leadership and often uses knowledge he gained during his time with PowerCorpsPHL to inform the work of his team.

Osman started with PowerCorpsPHL a little over a year ago, as a corps member during Cohort 1. Then, as an Assistant Crew Leader in Cohort 2 for the Philadelphia Water Department's newly formed Green Stormwater Infrastructure Maintenance crew. Check out the acknowledgement that Osman received from the Philadelphia Water Department for all of his great work.
