Dear ASU Prep Families and Friends:

We are proud to celebrate Veteran's Day this week and would like to thank all the brave men and women who currently serve or have served our country.

At the Poly Elementary School, students discussed what it means to be a veteran, and they shared the great sacrifices veterans make to protect our freedoms.  Our veterans are our heroes and we are extremely thankful for all they have done to ensure that we have the freedoms we enjoy each and every day.

Above: Veteran's Day letters created by the PES students, Below: PES thanking our Veterans

Above and Below: STEM Academy and PHS students thanking our Veterans

We have many veterans in our ASU Prep family; one that was recently honored by the City of Gilbert is Sophia (PES) and Jack (STEM Academy) DeSanti's grandmother. Lt. Colonel Margaret DeSanti, who served as an Army nurse for 30 years with multiple tours in Vietnam through the Desert Storm era. Until 5 years ago she was still training Army nurses in field triage and going up in Army helicopters based out of both Luke AFB and here with the unit based out of Mesa Gateway. Recently, she was honored at a HUSD Veteran's Day celebration. (pictures below).  Thank you Lt. Colonel DeSanti for your service to our country

We know many of you reading this newsletter are veterans of our military and we are extremely grateful for your service. We at ASU Prep are proud to celebrate you.

Sincerely,

Your ASU Preparatory Academy Polytechnic Leadership Team

Reminder -Poly HS Key Club - ASU Prep Poly's EYEGLASSES DRIVE

As Fall cleaning gets under way, the Key Club at ASU Prep Poly is asking people to look through their dresser drawers and closets for used eyeglasses and donate them to the Lions Club Recycle For Sight program. During the month of November, the Key Club will be collecting used prescriptioneyeglasses and prescription and non-prescription sunglasses are part of a unique recycling project. The collected glasses will be cleaned and prepared for distribution in developing countries where eye care is often unaffordable and inaccessible. "We need everyone to donate their used eyeglasses," said Cassandra Luna, Vice-President of Key Club at ASU Prep Poly. "In most developing countries, an eye exam can cost as much as one month's wages and a single eye doctor may serve a community of hundreds of thousands of people."

The donated glasses will be shipped to a regional Lions Club Eyeglass Recycling Center where they will be cleaned, categorized by prescription and prepared for distribution by Lions and other groups.

To donate used glasses (including sunglasses and reading glasses), place them in the specially marked Lions Recycle For Sight collection boxes located at all three of the ASU Prep Poly campuses (Elementary, STEM Academy, High School). The Key Club has over 20 members and meets weekly at ASU Prep High School to identify needs within the community and work together to fulfill those needs.

For more information or to arrange for pick-up of eyeglasses, please contact Cassandra Luna at CassieAZ2015@gmail.com.  Lions Club International is the world's largest service club organization with more than 1.3 million members in approximately 45,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas around the world. Since 1917, Lions Clubs have aided the blind and visually impaired and made a strong commitment to community service and serving youth throughout the world. For more information about the Lion Clubs International, visit the Web site at www.lionsclub.org.

Holiday Shopping Can Help ASU Prep!

If you like to get an early start on your holiday shopping, please remember there are at least three easy ways you can shop and earn money for our school without it costing you anything extra.

SAN TAN MALL

Did you know a night at the movies at San Tan Mall's Harkins Theaters can earn money for our school? Please save and send in all of your original receipts from shopping, dining, and entertainment at San Tan Mall. We are excited to be a part of the 2014/2015 School Cents program where our school can win up to $2,500 if we collect the most points. Our school earns at least five (5) points for each dollar spent at any of the participating stores, restaurants and services, plus bonus points are offered for supporting shopping center events and programs. Or you can take your receipts by the mall office and they will record them under our school. As of our last mall meeting, our school was in 5th.

AMAZON

All of your Amazon.com shopping can earn money for the school. We earn 4% or more on all purchases made through our special school link and it only takes a few orders to get us to 6%.  Please follow this link to make your Amazon purchases: http://www.amazon.com/?_encoding=UTF8&tag=appp0d-20. Thanks to all of the family and friends using this link, ASU Prep PTSO has earned over

$1,800 for the school. We earned almost $700 last November/December.

TARGET

Did you know holiday shopping with your Target REDCard can help us raise money for our school and you can save 5% on each sale? Our most recent Target contribution was $1,058! Here's how it works: Visit Target.com/tcoe or call 1-800-316-6142 to designate our school, and then use your REDcard whenever you shop. When you use your REDCard (Target Visa Credit Card and Target debit), Target will donate up to 1% of your purchases to the eligible K-12 school of your choice.  Make sure to register your card to our school (Our school is listed as Polytechnic Elementary, Zip Code: 85212 and School ID # 148568). Grandparents, alumni, friends and neighbors are all welcome to participate in the Target REDcard Take Charge of Education program. The more people we involve, the harder the program works for the school. Check out our school's progress anytime at Target.com/tcoe.
