Dear ASU Prep Families and Friends: Our parent partnerships are abundant at our ASU Prep Academy schools. This week, we thought we would focus on our parents, thanking you for all you do to make our schools incredible. Last week, we celebrated Red Ribbon Week and Homecoming. That week was a complete success. It was full of school spirit due in great part to our parents. Parents not only helped at school that week with the festivities, but, they made themselves available at ASU's Homecoming Block Party and parade, walking side by side with our students and helping at our ASU Prep information table. On Tuesday, parents helped at STEM Academy with our "shark dissection" lesson. They helped set up the lab, advised the students regarding their dissection, and helped with the clean up of the lab. All of this help was essential to the success of the students' learning in this lab experience. Wednesday night, our Kindergarten parents were out in full force in support of our Kindergarten Summative. They helped with the incredible set up, brought family to the event, and even stayed behind to help with the tear down. Yesterday, we took all our 1st and 2nd Graders to ASU Tempe for a field trip, again our parents were out in full force helping with the day, guiding our students on campus and being supportive of what was needed for a safe trip. Our ASU Prep Academy schools are so great because of our parent partnerships. We appreciate you and know you are one of the most important partnerships we have at our school. We thank you for your time and support in all we do. Sincerely, Your ASU Preparatory Academy Polytechnic Leadership Team

Traffic Restrictions at Poly Next Week We have been told by the City of Mesa that on Monday, November 10, we will have some traffic restrictions. Specifically on Williams Field Road, drivers will only be able to head NORTH on Innovation Way, but you'll be able to get all the way around doing a full loop of the campus on Innovation Way. This could cause some delays on heading to the High School or STEM Academy. Tuesday, 11/11, is a school holiday (no school), but traffic from Williams Field Road will only be able to head SOUTH on Innovation Way. Again, if you are on campus that day, you'll be able to make the full campus loop. Wednesday, 11/12, there will be some simple barricades in various locations as they work to complete all the striping, but traffic lanes will be open both directions. If you have any questions please feel free to contact the City of Mesa, Engineering Department at (480) 644-3127. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we continue to make the Polytechnic campus beautiful. FALL ATHLETICS END BEST SEASONS EVER!!! 112 Athletes participated in at least one fall sport. This years HS Boys' Soccer season had a rocky start with all the weather issues causing game delays and rescheduling. In the end, the team qualified for State and peaked at the right time. They won their first two games, one of them against a long time rival for whom they've never beaten before. This time a victory was at hand and it propelled ASU Prep into the CAA State Finals. They were very competitive but in the end the opponent was victorious. These ASU Prep athletes can hold their heads high given that the team has never made it to the State Finals before. Go Devils, look forward to a successful 2015 Soccer Season. The Junior High Flag Football Team had an outstanding season. They repeated as Far East Conference Champions, finishing the regular season with a 9-2-1 record and ranking as the 12th team in the state. The team's two all stars were Hunter A. and Derek E.. Thomas M. was selected as the best teammate while Derek E. was chosen as the team's MVP. The team lost in the first round of the playoff to a very tough Eduprize Queen Creek 27-12. Special mention must go to the outstanding 8 th grade class that provided terrific leadership and truly represented what it means to be an ASU Prep student-athlete. 1 & 2 Field Trip to ASU Tempe an Exciting and Informative Success On Friday, November 7, the Poly Elementary 1stand 2ndgraders joined the Phoenix Elementary 1stand 2nd graders at the Tempe campus. These students have been writing back and forth as pen pals, and this was the first opportunity to meet their pen pals. In addition, the new friends got to explore the Tempe ASU campus, learn about space exploration, tour the reptile exhibits provided by the Life Science program, and have lunch in the "Secret Garden". This was the first field trip of the year for our Poly students and they enjoyed every minute of it. Many of the staff at ASU complimented the ASU Prep students for their fine behavior and intelligent questions during our tour of campus. All students will receive a goodie bag from the University on Monday. A special thank you to the 1stand 2nd team for all their hard work to make this event happen and a special thanks to the many parents that gave their time to help. We are so lucky to have such great partners.
ASU's GIT Program Partnering in Elementary STEM Classrooms
The students in fifth and sixth grade are learning to video edit using the iMovie program, including green screen technology. This technology is called Chroma Key. Dr. Ralston, from the Graphic Information Technology department on the ASU Polytechnic campus came to the STEM Lab to explain what Chroma Key technology is, and how it works. She also spoke to the students about using photos and music that are copyrighted. The students were introduced to royalty free music websites, and creativecommons.org to find photos that are free for the students to use. Dr. Ralston has also generously offered to let us borrow her green screen backdrop, kodak camera, and tripod. It was a wonderful presentation filled with interesting and useful information. The students were so excited, and can't wait to start filming!
Above: Dr. Ralston and the "green screen" - Thank you Dr. Ralston for our partnership with ASU Poly GIT.
Partnership with ASU Poly Startup Labs
This week, Sean Dengler, the ASU Polytechnic Startup Lab Manager, came to work with Mrs. Hardt's fourth grade class. The students will be creating Bristlebots over the next few weeks. Bristlebots are tiny robots using a small motor and the head of a toothbrush. Sean led the class as the student's collaborated build a "course" for their Bristlebots. The process completely engaged students as they designed the final products each class will be using for their Bristlebots in the next few weeks. It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to participate in an authentic design experience. As Sean pointed out, this style of collaboration is what engineers experience everyday in their work lives. The students were able to share their creativity, ingenuity, problem solving skills, as well as their ability to work well with others. It was a special experience for everyone!

Reminder -Poly HS Key Club - ASU Prep Poly's EYEGLASSES DRIVE As Fall cleaning gets under way, the Key Club at ASU Prep Poly is asking people to look through their dresser drawers and closets for used eyeglasses and donate them to the Lions Club Recycle For Sight program. During the month of November, the Key Club will be collecting used prescriptioneyeglasses and prescription and non-prescription sunglasses are part of a unique recycling project. The collected glasses will be cleaned and prepared for distribution in developing countries where eye care is often unaffordable and inaccessible. "We need everyone to donate their used eyeglasses," said Cassandra Luna, Vice-President of Key Club at ASU Prep Poly. "In most developing countries, an eye exam can cost as much as one month's wages and a single eye doctor may serve a community of hundreds of thousands of people." The donated glasses will be shipped to a regional Lions Club Eyeglass Recycling Center where they will be cleaned, categorized by prescription and prepared for distribution by Lions and other groups. To donate used glasses (including sunglasses and reading glasses), place them in the specially marked Lions Recycle For Sight collection boxes located at all three of the ASU Prep Poly campuses (Elementary, STEM Academy, High School). The Key Club has over 20 members and meets weekly at ASU Prep High School to identify needs within the community and work together to fulfill those needs. For more information or to arrange for pick-up of eyeglasses, please contact Cassandra Luna at CassieAZ2015@gmail.com.
