Dear ASU Prep Families and Friends:

Homecoming is in full swing in our schools and on the ASU campus.  The Polytechnic High School celebrated last Friday, 10/24, with their Homecoming Dance. Senior and Student Council member, Alfredo Recillas, was the DJ for the event, and Mr. Greg Herriman was our professional photographer for the evening, capturing some great shots of the night's festivities.  Visit the student council website at studentcouncilasuprep.weebly.com for pictures of the event.

At the Polytechnic Elementary School they also celebrated with their Red Ribbon/ Homecoming week.

To cap off the Homecoming festivities, come join us today, Saturday, November 1st for the ASU Homecoming Parade and Block Party at the Tempe campus as ASU Football prepares to take on Utah. This annual tradition is bigger and better than ever, with the theme "Written in the Sparks." The event will feature activities for the whole family including interactive displays, games, and activities, a full kid's zone and reunion tents for colleges and alumni groups and will be held near University Drive and College Avenue. The Homecoming parade starts at approximately 4:30p p.m. ASU Prep students and parents have the opportunity to walk in the parade. If interested, please report to the corner of Lemon St. and McAllister Ave. and locate the ASU Prep float, and Ms. Jill Reid, who will check you in and get you ready to walk and represent ASU Prep.  After the parade and awesome block party, the game starts at 8pm.

Remember that as our valued ASU Prep partner, you, family, friends, and colleagues can purchase game tickets for 20% off

in any sectionby using the code ACCESSASU when purchasing. For more information, please see https://eoss.asu.edu/access/homecoming.We hope that during the Block Party and Parade that you stop by the ASU Prep table to say "hi" and if you have time, you can volunteer to promote our wonderful schools. See you there.

Your ASU Preparatory Academy Polytechnic Leadership Team

Information Nights and Enrollment Process for 2015-16

ASU Preparatory Academy will hold a series of information nights for families of potential students interested in attending ASU Preparatory Academy next school year.  Our next information night is scheduled for:

  • This Thursday, November 6th, 6 p.m., P -6 Grades @ PES, 7-12 Grades @ PHS
  • More dates may be added if needed.
All of the information nights will start at 6:00 p.m.  Information nights are an excellent way for families to learn about the new student enrollment process and learn about the ASU Prep curriculum and programs for Kindergarten through high school.

ASU Prep will once again hold two lotteries for potential students who would like to attend ASU Prep for the 2015-2016 school year.  The lottery for Kindergarten and 9th grade will be held on Tuesday, December 9th and the lottery for 1st through 8th grade and 10th through 12th grade will be held on Tuesday, February 10, 2015.  In order to be included in the lottery, a Lottery Interest Form must be completed for the student and submitted to the ASU Prep office by 12:00pm on the Friday proceeding the lottery date.  The Lottery Interest Form can be obtained in the ASU Prep front office or by visiting our ASU Prep. website.  Families of students who completed a lottery interest form for the current school year but who did not get enrolled must complete the new 2015-2016 lottery interest form in order to be included in the lottery for next school year.

Families of current ASU Prep students do not have to go through the lottery process and do not have to complete a lottery interest form.  However, all families of current students who plan on attending ASU Prep for the 2015-2016 school year must complete an Intent to Re-Enroll form and submit it to the ASU Prep office no later than 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 26th.  Current students who do not have an Intent to Re-Enroll form submitted for them by the deadline will lose their spot at ASU Prep for next school year and that spot will be given to a new student through the lottery process.  Please click on this link to complete the re-enrollment form.

If you know of a family that would like to attend ASU Prep next year, encourage them to attend one of the upcoming information nights and submit a Lottery Interest form by December 5.  If you are a current ASU Prep parent and plan on bringing your child back next school year, make sure you submit an Intent to Re-Enroll form no later than December 5. If a sibling who does not attend ASU Prep this year does not have a filled out Lottery Form, please add them to the Intent to Re-Enroll form under the new sibling only, this is only if the sibling is returning.

Poly Elementary Celebrates - "Dia de los Muertos"

November 2nd is the Mexican celebration known as "Dia de los Muertos" or "Day of the Dead". This is a festive day in Mexican culture, where beloved family members, friends or pets, who have passed away, are celebrated and remembered.

In Spanish class, Sra. Caro took this opportunity to teach students more about this popular Mexican celebration. The students learned vocabulary words and the history of this tradition. The students made their own calaveras this week as part of this lesson.

On the Beat with ASU Police Officer Gill - Safety Club Off and Moving at PES

I would like to take a moment of your time to share some exciting news with each of you regarding the Safety Club at the elementary.  Over our last two meetings we have been learning how to create safe homes and communities, as well as how to prepare for emergency situations.  Our members are bright and energetic and are excited to share in the learning process.  It is a pleasure to work with each of our members and learn about things together.  If you are interested in seeing an example of what we have done so far we have put together a poster that is hanging in the elementary just inside of the main office doors.

We are always looking for students who want to join our club.  If you have a 4-6
th
grade student who would be interested in participating feel free to email or call me and let me know.  Our next meeting will be held on Thursday November 13

Notes From the STEM Academy and Poly High School

Poly HS Student - Michelle Kyliavas - Received Full-Ride Scholarship to NAU

Congratulations to Miss Michelle Kyliavas who was recently named a Lumberjack Scholar and awarded the Lumberjack Scholarship Award. This is awarded to NAU applicants who have demonstrated academic excellence during their high school career. Students must have earned at least a 3.5 GPA and Bs or above in all of their college preparatory classes. The scholarship is valued at $36,480 over 8 semesters and covers the full cost of tuition. What a great example of the students we are creating at ASU Prep. We are so proud of you Miss Kyliavas!  Keep up the fine work and finish the school year strong!

College of Nursing - Doctoral Candidate Research in STEM Academy Classrooms

Did you know that our very own Elementary parent, Mrs. Kempton has been working on her Doctoral research with our STEM Academy Students? Mrs. Lorraine Kempton's project consists of surveying students' prior knowledge of skin cancer and sun protection, administering an educational intervention from the American Academy of Dermatology on sun safety, and then administering a post-survey to see if their knowledge or intent to expose themselves to the sun changed took place this week. The goal is to promote lifelong good sun exposure habits to decrease the incidence and prevalence of skin cancer morbidity and mortality. ASU Prep can then use the information and share this with future classes of students for years to come.   We look forward to sharing more information about this research as Mrs. Kempton defends and publishes her research. To think that our ASU Prep STEM Academy students are part of this great opportunity is amazing!

Poly HS Key Club - ASU Prep Poly's EYEGLASSES DRIVE

As Fall cleaning gets under way, the Key Club at ASU Prep Poly is asking people to look through their dresser drawers and closets for used eyeglasses and donate them to the Lions Club Recycle For Sight program. During the month of November, the Key Club will be collecting used prescriptioneyeglasses and prescription and non-prescription sunglasses are part of a unique recycling project. The collected glasses will be cleaned and prepared for distribution in developing countries where eye care is often unaffordable and inaccessible. "We need everyone to donate their used eyeglasses," said Cassandra Luna, Vice-President of Key Club at ASU Prep Poly. "In most developing countries, an eye exam can cost as much as one month's wages and a single eye doctor may serve a community of hundreds of thousands of people."

The donated glasses will be shipped to a regional Lions Club Eyeglass Recycling Center where they will be cleaned, categorized by prescription and prepared for distribution by Lions and other groups.

To donate used glasses (including sunglasses and reading glasses), place them in the specially marked Lions Recycle For Sight collection boxes located at all three of the ASU Prep Poly campuses (Elementary, STEM Academy, High School). The Key Club has over 20 members and meets weekly at ASU Prep High School to identify needs within the community and work together to fulfill those needs.

For more information or to arrange for pick-up of eyeglasses, please contact Cassandra Luna at CassieAZ2015@gmail.com.  Lions Club International is the world's largest service club organization with more than 1.3 million members in approximately 45,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas around the world. Since 1917, Lions Clubs have aided the blind and visually impaired and made a strong commitment to community service and serving youth throughout the world. For more information about the Lion Clubs International, visit the Web site at www.lionsclub.org.

HS Volleyball All-State Selections

Congratulations to junior Amber Ore-Giron (# 1 in pic below) for being selected to the CAA All-State Volleyball team.

Congratulations to Coach Barb Garcia (all the way to the right in pic below)for being named CAA Volleyball Coach of the Year.

Volleyball

The ASU Prep Volleyball Season came to an end last week during the first round of State playoffs. The team suffered a disappointing loss, but fought hard. It was the last game for Senior Cheyenne Samp who has been playing Sun Devil Volleyball the last five seasons. She is an amazing asset to the program and will be missed. The volleyball team and coaches wish her success and happiness in all of her future endeavors.

Team play was key to the Sun Devils' amazing 11 and 2 record. This year the Devils had every piece to the volleyball puzzle. Middle hitters let in attacks and blocks with Ore-Giron and Samp leading the charge. Outside hitters were young, but strong led by Cornwall-Elysee and DiForte. Of course nothing is possible without strong back row play. This year, Kaylor raised the game with great libero movement and passing, while Brotchsi and Dickson supported at the Defensive Specialist position. Rodriguez, Heywood and Arneson were always ready to step in and help whenever called to do so. Much thanks to Coach Hans who made a huge impact this year with stats and coaching.

Congratulations to middle hitter, Amber Ore-Giron, for being selected to this years All State Team. And congratulations to all of our amazing volleyball players on another phenomenal season. And a huge thank you to all the parents and fans for wonderful support this season and every season. Year after year, you prove what an amazing school ASU Prep is. Go Devils!
