Review, Consider, Act!
Every day I read about someone's idea for how to make lifestyle improvements. I recently heard of a new organization called "Thinkersmith," whose mission is to teach children and adults about technology while incorporating ideas of balance, like exercise and other activities away from the computer screen.
We are rich with ideas, yet not everyone moves their ideas forward. But in the
newsletter you'll find proposals from 21 nonprofit organizations whose ideas have been developed into solid programs that serve our community. Please take a minute to review some of the proposals and consider that with each idea that is moved forward through action, an individual's needs are met, and the ripple effect of that relationship is far reaching.
Review, consider, act-that's it!
Best wishes,

H.A.R.T. Family Resource Center Linn County
The H.A.R.T. Family Resource Center is a core community connector, founded in 1998, that is dedicated to actively reaching and providing opportunities for individuals, families and groups to improve their lives. We provide services and activities that help create a vital vibrant and active community many of which are not offered by any other organization in the rural community of Harrisburg and southern Linn County. We have long history, over 14 years, of providing summer day camps and classes, as well as, family field trips to our community.
Since Harrisburg School District went to a 4-day school week, there has been no consistent effort to engage children in organized activities on that day. So, we would like to expand our summer program to include a school year Friday Program: we are calling FEAT (Friday Education & Arts Together).
We intend to plan and organize a variety of enriching, fun and educational opportunities for children ages 5-18 from 9:00am- 3:00pm with a break for lunch on those 32 Fridays with no school. We have identified several areas of interest for the students: music lessons, drama/theater culminating with a performance, various mediums of art classes, jewelry making, martial arts and dance, computer & web technology and basic auto maintenance, tutoring, job mentoring and more. We have identified several instructors and facilitators to provide this program for our youth.
Scholarships are included in our budget as our school district for several years now has had a high rate of free and reduced lunch at 62%. This reflects a community where many families cannot afford to provide these activities from their own resources. Like many rural communities in Oregon we also have no public transportation and many families have little discretionary funds to drive their children to outside activities. We are looking forward to being able to offer this program to our families, especially those with limited resources and transportation. If successful the funding would allow us to keep our program fees low at $3 per class per student.
We have strong and significant connections and partnerships with established and new organizations and groups. The School District has been a longtime supporter and partner with the H.A.R.T. Center, providing meeting space and bus use for both our educational and recreational programs. The rural nature of our community means that we must rely on the resources of other organizations, which include churches for meeting our need for multiple meeting facilities. We are partnering with a new youth organization in town, "Youthspirations" to provide in-kind staff and meeting space for some of our classes.
