Reach Out!
Last week while visiting with a nonprofit's development director, the topic of board recruitment came up. He was lamenting the retirement of board members who served for several years and were such an important part of their organization's success. These volunteers helped shape the organization, they were excellent stewards of their fiduciary responsibilities, and in fact, they were pillars in the foundation on which the organization now stands.
Like many nonprofit organizations, he is seeking new board members who have various talents and skills: from people good at social networking, technology, and marketing, to attorneys, accountants and other professionals. Every nonprofit needs strong board engagement -- individuals who make a point of sharing information with people they know and meet, and are not afraid to ask for donations of support.
If you have been meaning to volunteer at some point, how about now? Think about what type of work you want to do, contact your favorite charity (I hope you have one), and ring them up today! I guarantee that the executive director, development director, program staff, volunteers, and the clients they serve, will all be grateful that you reached out!
Best wishes,
JenniferFounder jdurand@impactgrantmaking.com

SCIENCE FACTORY - Eugene
Got science? Or maybe you think science is too hard, esoteric and only for old guys in white coats. At the Science Factory, science learning is dressed down and ready for fun for all comers. We uncover the mysteries and wonders of the natural sciences and technology through exhibitions, planetarium programs, special events, camps and workshops.
Our service approach is light-hearted, but our purpose is anything but frivolous. We engage children, excite their curiosity and inspire them toward a lifelong love of learning about science, technology and humanity. Our visitors engage in activities that encourage curiosity, observation, critical thinking and experimentation - skills valuable to creating the next generation of innovators in any field. Along the way, as understanding increases of science, technology, engineering, and math and of the impact of these forms of knowledge as part of human culture, our community is better prepared to engage thoughtfully when science and policy intersect. While our primary focus is on kids from 2 to 14 years of age, the enthusiasm of our young visitors leads to learning by the whole family.
Taking advantage of informal learning opportunities and extracurricular activities results in greater overall success for children. As the only general science center serving Lane and surrounding counties, we strive to provide wide access to our programs. Fee discounts and waivers support school groups that visit from as far away as Roseburg, Albany and Mapleton, and from as close as Eugene and Springfield. Low-cost Community Memberships provide enriching activities for the clients of nonprofits that serve children and families. Girls-only camps and workshops encourage girls to explore science confidently. Summer camp scholarships keep kids' minds engaged during out-of-school time, and Open Houses provide access to all.
Come visit! We look forward to meeting you here.
