Making a difference...changing lives!
Collective Impact
A weekly newsletter advocating for the needs of nonprofit organizations

Issue 37, 8/6/13

Invite Participation

Every Tuesday, from the optimistic view of my vision, readers of the Collective Impact newsletter diligently share the information with their friends, colleagues and relatives. Gradually and effectively, the problems of a community are resolved.

There is no question in my mind that if we support the nonprofits that are on the ground working hard to solve problems in the community, we will all reach a better level of health and security. It's really up to us. We can we rise to the challenge, open our hearts with compassion and trust, and the health of our community will improve.

I invite you to join the dedicated staff and volunteers whose unrelenting focus is to make life better. Their efforts affect us all, whether we use their services or not, because we are a community. We have capacity to support them, to solve problems, and to create sustainability. To quote Jesse G. Jennings, PhD. in SOM magazine, "Responsibility is knowing that we have what it takes because we are what it takes."

Participate today, forward the newsletter to five or more of your friends and colleagues, ask them to donate and to forward the news on to their connections. Wouldn't that exponentially be worth your effort?

Best wishes,

   Jennifer

SPOTLIGHT ON A NONPROFIT
Willamette Farm and Food Coalition

The Willamette Farm and Food Coalition (WFFC) has been connecting farmers and consumers in Lane County for the past decade. With a mission of facilitating the development of a secure and sustainable food system, we work to promote locally grown and raised foods and to educate consumers about the benefits of eating locally.

WFFC envisions a secure and sustainable food system as one in which:

  • our farms and food businesses are both ecologically and economically viable;
  • our agricultural lands are supporting a larger percentage of our food needs;
  • and all members of our community have access to locally produced foods.

WFFC is widely recognized as an essential community resource. In our role as "benevolent broker" we have provided connections and convenience to consumers at all levels (households, businesses, and institutions). The 10th anniversary issue of our popular Locally Grown Guide to Sourcing Local Foods was published this year.We distribute 25,000 free copies of this consumer resource annually. Locally Grown is also available online with a fully searchable farm and product index.

WFFC's Farm to School Program serves as a model for the state and has successfully assisted four school districts in increasing their purchases of Lane County and Oregon grown produce, in addition to educating hundreds of elementary school children about where their food comes from. WFFC serves as Oregon's lead agency for the National Farm to School Network, providing technical assistance and support to Farm to School programs throughout Oregon.

Over the next two years, WFFC will implement a collaborative consumer education and marketing campaign called Lane County Food makes Dollars and Sense. The campaign will use strategic relationships, consistent messages, and coordinated media to increase the demand for locally produced foods on a county-wide scale. We are confident that increasing consumer demand for Lane County products will not only keep more dollars circulating close to home, but will increase food sector job growth as well as our long term food self-reliance.
