THE ARC of LANE COUNTY
The Arc Lane County has been providing programs and services to people with intellectual developmental disabilities (I/DD) and their families for 60 years. Our mission has always been family focused and family driven. Within our 60 year history family empowerment has been a cornerstone behind The Arc. Through our advocacy efforts children are being accepted more and more into mainstream schools and communities, but there is still a lot of work left to do. The Arc Lane County has always been on the cutting edge of listening to families and making things happen in our community. Recently the Oregon legislature allocated funding to start four family networks across the state. The Arc Families Connected program was selected as one of the four family-to-family networks. The recognized strength of the family network is that when parents connect with other parents who can share a vision of possibility, and help each other find strength, they break the cycle of loneliness and isolation for each other, and in turn, their children, changing their trajectory to one of empowerment and success.
The Arc provides services that are vital to all families being able to function from day-to-day. Families get helpful training with behavior support, personal safety, stress management and more. In addition to the Families Connected program, The Arc offers a once per month respite day. As stated by one family, "before we received services our lives were so full of stress that it greatly affected our health and the stability of our marriage. The money invested in my family will allow us to continue to be part of the community and prepare my son to one day be able to hold a job and have a positive effect on and in the local community."
The Arc's dream is to grow the Take-A-Break respite program to provide more families the opportunity to feel empowered and more connected in their community. Please visit our website at: www.arclane.org
