Events for Fun and Funds

Several years back, I participated in a nonprofit organization's training program to run my first marathon. I fundraised nearly $3,000 for them and they provided a coach. Outside of my children's births, it was one of the most gratifying experiences of my life. My jogging ability at the time I started training was about four miles, three or four days a week, so finishing 26.2 miles was incredibly moving and satisfying.

In today's environment, running events have become a very successful way to bring a community together and raise funds to help an organization fulfill their mission of serving individuals in need.

Of course not everyone has a marathon or half-marathon in their future. There are many other fundraising event opportunities: golf tournaments, auctions, breakfast or dinner events, carnivals, and concerts, to name a few. In addition to having an enjoyable experience, you will meet people with your same charitable interests.

It's easy to find fundraisers, simply check out the nonprofit events page currently posted on the Impact Grantmaking website, choose an organization that matches your values and fund your charity while having fun!

Best wishes,

Jennifer

SPOTLIGHT ON A NONPROFIT

Sponsors, Inc.

About 700+ people per year come back to Lane County from prison or jail. Most of the people released do not have a home to go back to, and wind up on the street. Many people who come home to Lane County after prison or jail only have clothes and a few personal items that fit into a medium-sized plastic bag.

Sponsors, Inc. has been providing reentry services to the formerly incarcerated in Lane County, Oregon for 40 years. We are a dynamic organization whose mission is to provide transitional housing and a multitude of other services to 132 men and women in 11 buildings on 4 different sites. Eighty percent of our clients successfully complete our program and when they leave us, they have demonstrated success in 4 areas:

1)      Clean and sober living

2)      Full time employment or full time student status

3)      Permanent housing

4)      Adhering to the conditions of their parole or probation

When people access our services, they are set up for successful living. They are assets to the community, not draining community resources. A small investment in their success makes our entire community safer.

Sponsors is currently breaking ground on a new home (RISE) where mothers and their children can be reunited in a safe and supportive environment. The Women's Transition Program at Sponsors provides a necessary balance of resources and accountability to women reentering Lane County after incarceration.  Women in the program comply with rigorous requirements for scheduled and random drug testing, a curfew, employment and education expectations, and service work.
