Treat Yourself to the Arts!

I recently had the honor of reviewing grant applications for the Oregon Arts Commission. The proposals were from various organizations throughout the state in need of funding for operating support.

Each of these organizations has their unique and creative production for the audience's enjoyment - there's crafting art, historical museums, contemporary arts, choruses, operas, writing residencies, chamber music, theatre, youth symphony, and dance. We have so many wonderful organizations for our entertainment with hundreds of individuals devoted to their craft.

In a challenging economy, immediate needs usually trump the arts, but here's another way to offer support besides making a donation: attend a live performance. Doing so will not only elevate your enjoyment of life, but also add to the economy. Your attendance ensures the artists get paid for taking you on an artistic adventure, and the artists spend money in the community; it's a total win-win!

So this summer, treat yourself to the arts - walk through a museum, sit through a concert or live theatre production, and witness the hard work of curators, musicians and actors, singers and dancers. Their lives will be enriched because you were there to enjoy the fruit of their efforts - and the best part, is that it's fun!

Best wishes,

Jennifer

SPOTLIGHT ON A NONPROFIT
WellMama, Inc.

Since 2007, WellMama has been the only provider in Lane County offering specific education, advocacy, and resources to women's healthcare providers and their patients who struggle with maternal mental health issues, like depression and anxiety, during pregnancy and postpartum.

For a woman who is under excessive amounts of stress during pregnancy, studies show that her child is substantially more likely to have emotional or cognitive problems, including an increased risk of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders, anxiety and language delay. Furthermore, a mother's depression or anxiety issue that continues or develops after the baby is born will also impact her child through the mother's poor or negligent parenting, resulting in a harder-to-care for child or one who tends to cry more frequently and for longer periods of time.

A former client and current volunteer of WellMama states, "When I got to the three-month mark (after my son was born), I crashed pretty quickly. I was so exhausted in body, mind, and soul. Within three days my doula, my favorite midwife, and my sons' pediatrician all told me I needed to go to WellMama." She credits WellMama for saving her life.

Many women do not know the symptoms of perinatal maternal mood disorders and may feel like depression or anxiety is "just a part of motherhood" when in fact, it is a treatable medical condition. Unfortunately, as these types of disorders progress, they tend to increase in severity so catching them early is critical for both the mother and her child.

WellMama's 40 volunteers and half-time executive director provide accurate information and confidential, nonjudgmental support to women and their families. WellMama also offers a free warm-line, mama-to-mama email and phone support program, peer group services, and has an extensive referral program.

WellMama educates the community through perinatal mental health education, consultation, and training within the professional community regarding the most recent research on prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders in Lane County.
