SPOTLIGHT ON A NONPROFIT WOMENSPACE, INC.
Safety. Relief. Empowerment. Hope. Womenspace is all of these things to someone escaping the terror of domestic violence. For more than 35 years, Womenspace has offered safe shelter and advocacy for women and children fleeing violent homes. Our mission is to prevent domestic violence in intimate partner relationships in Lane County and support survivors in claiming personal power. Womenspace allows survivors to establish independent lives free from abuse through crisis intervention, safety planning, empowerment, peer counseling, life skills education, parenting classes and age-appropriate support for children. All services are free and offered in both English and Spanish. Our prevention services include healthy relationship presentations in local schools. We work closely community partners, and provide training, information and resources. A recent success story gives an example of the power of our program: "Amy" was admitted to our confidential shelter after calling our 24-hour Crisis Line to escape her abusive partner. We discovered she had a medical issue that curtailed her ability to find employment, and no insurance. Her advocate found a local doctor who agreed to treat Amy at no cost. In return, she worked at the medical office as a volunteer, which eventually turned into a paid position and ultimately a new career. That medical office now offers free check-ups for kids, and Amy does the outreach for this "pay it forward" program. She told Womenspace that it adds depth to both her work and her life to be involved in such a project. This is just one example of what survivors can achieve when they are listened to, believed, and supported. Stories like this are not publicized - you won't read about them in the paper. The confidentiality and safety of survivors is our top priority. But in the meantime, our staff quietly and competently goes about their work, helping survivors create a new future for themselves - without violence or fear and with new found hope. Their website is: www.womenspaceinc.org -- please review their proposal in this issue! Best wishes, Jennifer Jennifer Durand Founder jdurand@impactgrantmaking.com Please forward the Newsletter to increase the nonprofit's opportunity to receive funding. Thank you! |

Giving Lesson In an Oregon Diner
When a customer told his waitress at a Salem, Oregon diner that he wanted to pay the meal tab for two Oregon National Guard soldiers sitting nearby, he unwittingly launched a four hour marathon of kindness among strangers. The guardsmen paid the good deed forward, picking up the check for another table. Folks at that table did the same for another, and it continued. "People were just pointing at tables", reported Tammy Hall, the assistant manager at Sybil's Omelettes Unlimited, to the Salem Statesman Journal. She lost track of how many times the cycle repeated itself as it approached twenty transactions, and it didn't stop until closing time.
This series of simple acts holds deeper lessons for the nonprofit field about why people act with generosity. For example:
- There's a catalyst: While we may first think of tremendous opportunities or pressing challenges as the catalyst for philanthropy, the catalyst can also be one unassuming person with a commitment to action.
- It's easy. The call to action is quiet, but clear and specific.
- It's meaningful. The value-added of each contribution is tangible.
- There's positive peer pressure. People who are surrounded by givers give themselves.
- It feels good: In the words of waitress Lorri Collins, "It just really made the day to know there are so many good people out there. It really felt spiritual among us."
There's a lot of inspiration in this story for both donors and nonprofit development work.
