TED Talk Not to Miss
Getting to know staff in the nonprofit sector has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, I have learned so much these last several years in the field of philanthropy. Last week, Lynn Youngs, Director of Community and Financial Development for ABC House -- a child abuse assessment center serving Linn and Benton Counties, emailed me the link to Dan Pallotta's talk on TED.com. I was shaking my head in agreement the entire time as it's very thought provoking.
Dan Pallotta is founder of Pallotta TeamWorks. He created the concept of multi-day pledge programs for charities that fundraise through endurance events. Dan discusses the idea that nonprofits should be allowed to market and advertise their organizations just like a for-profit enterprise in order to increase support, plus much more. Here is the link to the March 2013 event on TED.com: March 2013 event
This week, we have Ms. Kathi Jaworski as our guest columnist. Kathi's been in the nonprofit sector for nearly 20 years. You can read more information about Kathi at the Impact Grantmaking website under the "About Us" tab.
As my special request, please click on this link to take a quick poll so that we know how we're doing:

Evaluating to Learn
by Kathi Jaworski
Three questions:
- Would you not weigh yourself while dieting until the date you'd targeted for meeting your goal?
- Would you invest $1,000 in a product without investigating its quality?
- On the other hand, would you not try anything new without being 100% sure it would work?
Hopefully, you answer "of course not" to all three!
These personal questions illustrate three basic principles of "performance improvement" evaluation: interim measurement, evidence-based practice, and spirit of discovery. The distinctive feature of this type of evaluation is that it's not primarily focused on proving you've done a good job to some external party. Rather, it's intended to help you improve as you implement; to learn and make course corrections in real time so that you meet your goals. In everyday language, it's "evaluating to learn."
At the level of organization, it can feel overwhelming to launch systematic evaluation that comes naturally in your personal life. But it's doable, step by step, and you don't have to be an expert to get started. The steps include:
- ensuring that your desired outcomes are clear (that darn logic model exercise helps!)
- integrating lessons from others in your field about promising strategies as you plan (evidence-based practice)
- measuring only what you must in the easiest way possible to track your progress (efficient interim measurement), and
- building a culture of learning so that people in your organization welcome and use performance improvement data to adapt their work in real time (spirit of discovery).
It's motivating to work for an organization that systematically evaluates progress toward its outcomes with learning in mind. When you see clear evidence that something is working, you know you're being effective. When you see evidence that it's not, you can shift course in time to make a difference. Both are useful. Furthermore, the same information you gather for learning also builds a strong case for future funding of what works.
Physicist Enrico Fermi once said about evaluation "There are two possible outcomes: If the result confirms the hypothesis, then you've made a measurement. If the result is contrary to your hypothesis, then you've made a discovery." Indeed! Why not get started?
