Set the Bar
Last week we witnessed President Barack Obama taking oath for his second round of tackling problems in the United States and elsewhere. In the scheme of things, Oregon doesn't have significantly more difficult problems than any other state, but I suspect that no matter who is president, governmental support may never return to the level that it once was. Therefore, it is incumbent on us to look at our own communities to assess and create the changes needed toward solving problems.
I was born in the fifties, and there were plenty of families in need, including my own. We received a box or two of second-hand clothing, but we were just as excited as anyone to get something new or different to wear. I remember the father of my brother's friend, who, every Friday night, would drive to several homes and pack his station wagon with kids to go roller skating at the indoor Roller Gardens. It was his way of giving parents a respite, and giving children an opportunity to do something they otherwise would not be able to do. His actions were incredibly unselfish and kind, but what stands out most is the modeling of behavior that each child witnessed; we all felt his love and compassion.
The message here is that we are providers and the doers. We can pack our vehicles with whatever is needed and give to charitable organizations that can reach ten individuals to our one. So climb in your wagon and enjoy the ride - give often and generously because you are setting the bar for the next generation.
Please Give Today!
Best wishes,
Jennifer
