Issue 5 - 12/26/12
There is something about change that inspires me. I might change the way furniture is arranged in my living room for a fresher feel, change my career path, as I did with Impact Grantmaking, or completely change my life by adopting a puppy -- yes, I now have a puppy!
At 10 weeks old, pup is completely care-free and I need to watch every move she makes, for her safety and my sanity. I've noticed that most things happen in spurts of 30-seconds or less: petting, jumping, eating, running, training, and then she sleeps for 30 minutes or more! I've accepted that changing her behavior is going to be a slow process, that I need to take a deliberate course of action towards change, and that as we work together, we learn together.
Being passionate about my work, I couldn't help but make the connection that in the course of living, change is inevitable, whether one causes it or not. One day you are content and care-free, and the next day you find things have changed and you are starting over. At that point, you may have support of family and friends to regroup and begin building anew, or you may be alone and need the assistance of a nonprofit to help you get back on your feet. Either scenario requires taking deliberate action, having faith, and seeking the help of others.
For many reasons, people make charitable donations at the end of the year. If you are one of these people, here's a suggestion: pick a cause that creates the kind of positive change for another that you would want for yourself--it's that simple!
Have a wonderful New Year!
