Dear Parents and Students,

I hope you are enjoying the middle of the summer break as much as I am. It has been a busy time around campus with cleaning, painting, hanging new signs, Animas meetings, sports, and our Summer Bridge for incoming 9th graders. Our students have created a palpable buzz, as they have hit the ground running with a passion that is infectious. Along with their presence and passion we have new people in administrative positions - Ms. McLeod as Coordinator of Youth Ministry, Mr. Hazel as Athletic Director and Associate Dean, and Mr. Monroy as Dean and Activities Director. Two of our new teachers have already been on campus working in their classrooms and coaching - Ms. Janelle Silva in the English Department and Mr. John Ausman in Social Studies, PE, and as a Varsity Football Coach. We have also added Mr. Edward Kelly - our Men's Varsity Basketball Coach and current parent - as an Assistant Athletic Director to support Mr. Hazel and Mr. Nakagawa in athletics. Mr. Nakagawa is still in charge of Facilities, Varsity Baseball, and an Assistant Athletic Director.

Along with them, we have been busy building the student population at St. Francis for the 2015-2016 school year. I am happy to share that the number of Sharks has grown. Our resident and international student population will be bigger this year and we are very proud of our new growth. Even with the new growth, we are committed to maintaining personal relationships amongst the students, parents, faculty, and staff. We will still maintain a high level of connectivity - both electronic and personal - that will continue to be the hallmark of this great school. As I have stated at parent meetings and recruiting nights, the #1 indicator for success with high school students is whether they feel known by name and nurtured for success. This is also the value proposition of our patron saint and founder, St. John Bosco; and, this is the value added for our educational experience versus any other public, private, or charter school in the central coast.

I celebrate the opportunity to welcome all of our students to St. Francis High School - Salesian College Preparatory this fall. It is a blessing to watch them grow day by day. This summer I had the opportunity to connect with alumni from St. Francis and my other school, St. John Bosco. This summer I had the honor of attending Ty Sambrailo's graduation and signing party for his family and friends. This was an amazing event that brought home the "family" aspect of St. Francis that we always talk about. It was wonderful hearing about his and his classmates' great memories of St. Francis and their strong ties with coaches and teachers. It was also affirming to hear him speak about how well prepared for college and for life he was by attending and graduating from St. Francis. This summer I have also had a chance to plan a first-time event for us - the kick-off dinner for the Salesian Youth Leadership Conference (SYLC) held each summer in Aptos at Camp St. Francis. I have been working with Br. Al Vu, Ms. Shannon McLeod, Ms. Lina Silva, and two recent alumnae - Izzy Shahmirza (UCLA bound) and Erica Leung (University of Oregon bound) to host a dinner for 150 young people from all Salesian parishes and high schools in California as well as 20-30 Salesian priests and brothers returning from their retreat on July 26th. For this event, we are still looking for donations from our families of bagged/packaged salad mix, berries, individually bagged chips for each participant, and help with the setup and take down for the event. Please contact Ms. Lina Silva at 831.724.5933 extension 222 or email her at silva@stfrancishigh.net to help. You earn valuable service hours for your donations and your time.

I pray each of our students have meaningful, life-altering experiences like the ones demonstrated by these two events that help them grow in faith, knowledge, compassion, confidence, leadership, service, and love to each other and to God. We are truly the home of scholars, champions, and leaders!

Congratulations to all of our AP students and teachers. This last year, again we grew in success! Our AP pass rate maintained its level of success with an average of 81%. I also want to congratulate and thank our AP Studio Art, AP Studio Art 2-D Design, AP Psychology, and AP French students for achieving a 100% pass rate. Thank you also to the exceptional teachers leading these classes, especially Ms. Heidi Alonzo. In the last 3 years we have achieved 100% pass rates in the above-mentioned classes along with AP English Literature, AP English Language, AP Calculus AB, and AP Spanish Language. This recognizes St. Francis High School as an academic leader that scores 25-30% higher than the national average pass rates.

A reminder, also, about the great success of our Latin Language program in passing the National Latin Exam. Thank you Mr. Pyne. This year we will maintain a Latin 1 and Latin 2 class in our Language department. This year we are launching our new Biomedical Science Program to enhance the real-world STEM learning opportunities for our students, too. Dr. Lisa Homesley is poised and ready to lead these new classes. Finally, I want to congratulate Marissa DeVogelaere and Drew Kreeft for achieving National Merit Scholarship Program status for 2016. These talented students are in the top 3% of all students who took the PSAT last year - a number close to 1.5 million. Like a proud parent, I am honored to share in the successes of our students and our staff.

This year's province wide and school theme is With Jesus, let us adventure in the Spirit together. You will see and hear some version of this theme permeate everything that we do. I value themes that can be branded on a t-shirt or coffee cup, so we are partnering with the Salesian Province and Salesian High School in Richmond to tighten this theme up. With this theme in mind, we are concluding the bicentennial celebration of Don Bosco's birth - 1815 to 2015. This year's Feast of St. John Bosco celebration (January 29, 2016) will be a mass celebrated across the street at Our Lady Help of Christians, and we want to introduce an annual Mary Help of Christians day in May this year to celebrate our faith traditions - it will be a school wide mass, the annual Megaladon Challenge between the seniors and the staff, DJ's, bands, and sporting contests between all students of all grades. It is also Ms. McLeod's and my commitment to pursue more opportunities to partner with our Pastor, Fr. Joseph from the parish across the street. We are both Salesian and want to celebrate our heritage and traditions together.

I am happy to share the results of our student surveys and parent surveys with the staff this fall. By disaggregating the data we can identify common themes of success and areas to constantly improve. I will share the result of this analysis and planning with our SFPA Board this September. All are welcome to attend any monthly board meeting, the 3 SFPA General Meetings, or any Counseling Meeting that Ms. Green hosts (Even if your student is not in that specific grade) to complete your SFPA Meeting requirement. Please refer to your school registration contract and/or the website for further details.

We are enhancing and simplifying communication on service hour opportunities for school events, SFPA events, visual and performing arts events, athletic events, and Bingo, through volunteerspot.com. We have successfully launched its use for Bingo and we are preparing to launch the others this August. Along with this communication tool, Mr. Watson and I are mapping out/designing our mobile app to simplify access to important school information/calendars/personnel this August as well. The launch of both of these tools came as a result of parent surveys and direct input from our SFPA Board. With this letter I am attaching our 2015-2016 Fundraising calendar; with the Board of Director's leadership we have simplified this effort and are communicating early so you as a family know what is coming and what our commitments are. Our goal is 100% participation for each. By achieving 100% participation it makes us more eligible for local and national grant funding.

Here, at St. Francis High School, we form a family in the spirit of Don Bosco. He reminds us that we are on loan to each other. In this life we are given to each other temporarily, just for a time. That in no way lessens, but rather enhances, the relationships we have, encouraging us to live each day and each moment to the fullest. This, I think, is at the heart of Don Bosco's spirituality. He found God in daily life. He found God in events as they unfolded, in the young to whom he was sent, and in the colleagues with whom he worked. Don Bosco promoted a religion of ordinary life, of spirituality for the young, of just completed homework, of responsibly done chores, of well played games, and beautifully crafted music and drama. As a product of this educational system for the last 30 years, and as a sophomore parent too, I have found that it's a good spirituality for all of us - both young and adult. May we live it daily this summer, finding God in all things. For now, I hope each of you have a summer that offers rest as well as the opportunity to do good for others.

Yours in Christ,

Mr. Lee Signature

President and Principal

I am Katie Farley, and I am a 10th grader here at St. Francis High School. I would like to introduce a new member of my family and our St. Francis family. This new family member/student is Cherish and she is a 4 ½  month old Golden Retriever-Labrador that I am training for a local charity called - Guide Dogs for the Blind.

It is my job to train her for the next 12 months as Cherish prepares to go and work with a physically challenged person. Like other local schools are doing in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties, St. Francis High School is allowing me to train this dog. When I spoke to Mr. Lee about this proposed project, he informed me that he would vet the proposal through the diocese and through the school's insurance. After vetting the charity as well as the proposal, and Guide Dogs for the Blind  providing a certificate of insurance, the project was approved.

Consequently, Cherish will attend school with me. She will be part of our daily school community as she has to learn appropriate behavior and listening skills to graduate from the program.

When you see Cherish and me around campus, the most helpful thing you can do, both for her and me, is to just ignore her. Though she is a really cute and friendly dog, when she has the guide color on she is "working" and "training." Trying to pet or play with her will only distract her and put her training backwards. If she passes her training, she will graduate to be a guide for a person that has lost his/her sight. Guide Dogs for the Blind matches each dog based on their personality and the personality of the future owner. The program does not come at any cost to those that are receiving the guide dogs, and has changed thousands of people's lives. Guide Dogs for the Blind currently has over one thousand working guides in the United States.

CYM report

"Direct every action to the Lord by saying, "Lord, I offer You this work, please bless it.""

- Don Bosco

I am honored to celebrate my fifth year at St. Francis and so very excited to start this year as your new Coordinator of Youth Ministry (CYM).  In addition to being CYM, I will also continue to teach freshman theology.  This year is extra special for me as well, due to the fact that my son enters our halls as a freshman Shark.

As your CYM, my goal is to increase the leadership and service opportunities for our students.  We are blessed with very talented motivated youth who want to be engaged and make their mark in the world.  Mr. Monroy and myself are working together to grow student leadership opportunities. The vision for our Animas program is to expand the leadership opportunities into our four pillars of church, school, home, and playground.  This will increase leadership roles in our clubs and co-curricular programs.

One of my duties as CYM is to coordinate the Christian Service Program.  My goal here is to support students in finding their passion and supporting them in finding meaningful service opportunities.  Last year our school wide theme was "Youth for Youth".  We saw some great service activities merge from this theme. Senior Valentina started a teddy bear drive for Get On The Bus, which reunited inmates with their children on Mother's day and Father's day.  The teddy bears were given to the children as a gift from their parents.  This was a great example of youth serving youth.  We also saw senior Marissa spearhead getting every student on campus reusable water bottles so we can be friendlier to our planet by not adding more plastic bottles to our landfills.  Marisa did a great job inspiring other youth to think about the environment and their personal footprint.

These students gave us some great examples of youth serving, inspiring, motivating, educating, and caring for other youth.  I hope to continue this theme into this year as we continue to grow our leadership and service opportunities.

Greetings and Welcome from the Office of the Dean of Students and Director of Students Activities:

I am excited about my new roles as Dean of Students and Director of Student Activities. I am honored for the opportunity to serve all St. Francis High School students, faculty, staff, parents, and community members, and I look forward to a great 2015-2016 school year!

As the Dean of Students, my main responsibility will be to provide leadership and supervision in the area of student discipline with the purpose of promoting a school climate that is conducive to learning and the community. As you may have heard, Mr. Adam Hazel will be serving as Associate Dean. Mr. Hazel and I will be collaborating to ensure that all students live out the mission and vision of the school. I am grateful for the service and leadership he will provide in this capacity.

The 2015-2016 Student-Family Handbook is updated on our school website, and I encourage all students to review it prior to the start of the new school year. The handbook provides students and parents with information regarding our school's philosophy, mission, general policies, dress code, discipline issues, student leadership, academic policies, and other pertinent items. Please pay close attention to the dress code and appearance section of the handbook to learn about the expectations for the upcoming year.

Regarding parking on campus, students who drive a vehicle to school need to have a parking permit. The form for a parking permit is available in the Main Office or online.  The price of parking permits will increase on August 28, so I encourage all students to purchase them as soon as possible.

In my role as Director of Activities, I will be dedicated to developing and cultivating student life through enjoyable and spirited student activities. My responsibilities include the supervision and facilitation of dances, VITA, rallies, Battle for the Paddle, class elections, clubs, and spirit week among other events. The new school year has not yet started, but passionate students have already contacted and approached me about helping make this year's activities memorable. Thank you!

Within the area of activities, I have the privilege of working with Mrs. Shannon McLeod who will coordinate our student leadership body known as Animas. As Mrs. McLeod stated in her letter, "The vision for our Animas program is to expand the leadership opportunities into our four pillars of church, school, home, and playground." With this vision in mind, students will have the opportunity to collaborate with the rest of the student body, faculty, staff, school administration, and parents to build a program of youth serving youth.

Any students passionate about servant leadership and adding value to others are encouraged to be a part of Animas. Applications for Animas, class elections, and clubs will be available to students in September. Current Animas members are encouraged to attend scheduled meetings to participate in the planning of August activities.

In addition to my roles as Dean and Director of Activities, I will teach Health/Physical Education and serve as head coach for the Men's Varsity Soccer program. It will be an exciting year for our soccer program and I look forward to serving and working with current and future footballers!

I would like to close by reiterating that I look forward to working with and serving everyone in the St. Francis community. With the collaboration of our faculty and staff, I hope to provide an enjoyable, meaningful, and purposeful learning experience for all students.

Enjoy the rest of your summer, and I look forward to seeing everyone in August!

St. Francis Athletics Newsletter

Hello all, I am excited to start my new position as Athletic Director and Associate Dean and continuing to teach and coach here at St. Francis. Over the past three years of teaching and coaching, I have seen how special St. Francis is and the incredible value that our families receive. I'd like to thank Mr. Patrick Lee for giving me this opportunity and would like to thank Mr. Art Walker for helping me through the transition and wish him well at his new school in Petaluma.

At St. Francis, this is a very exciting time for our student athletes and our school as we had the male and female CCS Scholar/Athletes of the year from our 2015 graduating class in Cooper Scherr and Isabella Shahmirza.  Caroline Casper and Cooper Scherr were named the 2015 Santa Cruz Sentinel Scholar Athletes of the Year.  Class of 2010 alum, Ty Sambrailo, completed a successful football career at Colorado State and is  now part of the Denver Broncos. We put up multiple championship banners last year and are working to put up more as our favorite banner is the next one! This fall we will be fielding teams for Co-ed Cross-Country, Girls Tennis, Girls Volleyball and Football. In football we are happy to announce we will have a Frosh/Soph team as well as a varsity team.

I'd like to take a moment to list the major events within our athletic department to highlight the opportunities to raise funds for our programs and to encourage alumni to come back to St. Francis.

Fundraising

Every program will be fundraising this year in the athletic department to raise money for practice and game equipment, uniforms, and SCCAL/CCS fees. Thank you in advance for all your hard work as this will help continue and grow our athletic programs. It is my vision to eliminate all of the multiple small fundraisers and focus on a few larger fundraisers to get our student-athletes the necessary equipment and uniforms to successfully compete in the the SCCAL and CCS.

I'd also like to announce that our football program was awarded a $2,500 grant from USA Football and Riddell. Thank you to both USA Football and Riddell! As an athletic department myself and our coaches will continue to look for these opportunities to help with fundraising for our programs.

Online Spirit Pack Store

This fall we  launched online spirit pack stores for football and cross-country teams. The plan behind this was to save families money and reduce the upfront cost for the school. In the future, the online spirit packs will have required items and optional items. If your student/athlete already has the required equipment/accessory and  if the previously purchased item is in good condition, your student athlete does NOT need to purchase the required item. The optional items are there for you so can buy these items at a discounted group rate and if your family wants multiple shirts and  sweatshirts, they can buy them through the online store. Also, your uncle in Chicago, aunt in Dallas, and parents in Sao Paulo, can buy the spirit pack gear and sport them all over the world.

It is my goal to simplify the process, allow quick and easy access for student-athletes, families, and fans, and to incorporate the ease of debit/credit card purchasing,  By the end of this school year, it is my vision to have all of our spirit packs online.

Welcome to another great year of sports at St. Francis High School and GO SHARKS!

Thank you,

Adam Hazel

Athletic Director/Associate Dean

St. Francis High School Summer Reading

2015-2016

Each year, St. Francis students engage in summer reading of selections made by the English Department. This practice constitutes an important component of each student's high school reading program by promoting an increased appreciation of literature, enhancing the student's awareness of the value of reading as a recreational activity, and preparing the student for his or her upcoming year in the English Language Arts at St. Francis.

For summer reading, students may purchase the books in any format (paperback or digital) from any legal source. These books should be read by the first day of school. Students should expect an objective assessment at the beginning of the academic year; moreover, the works will be integrated into the content of the course curriculum as appropriate.
