Dear Parents, Families, and Friends of St. Francis High School:
The beginning of May is upon us; that brings to mind a number of things that will be taking place in our St. Francis Community. This past weekend gave us a surprise - a much needed rain. We were readying ourselves to prepare for the annual St. Francis barbeque and as the clouds were forming, we had two thoughts: on one side of our mouths we were saying please, no rain, we're getting ready for our barbeque, and on the other side of our mouths - we need it! The rain fell during the night and as the skies cleared, all rejoiced! The barbeque and day together went off very well. The day before we hosted our first annual golf tournament which was another successful venture. The WASC accreditation mid-term report reminded us of all the hard work that our excellent educators and staff have realized, and our parents' and friends' participation has really brought to mind what the Salesian Family is all about.
The month of May, with all of its activities, leads us to remember that our spiritual path needs to be cultivated as well. With that in mind, we remember the Mother of God under the title of "Help of Christians." We will be celebrating the Feast of Our Lady Help of Christians on Monday, May 25th this year. The feast is usually on May 24, but since it falls on a Sunday, the Resurrection maintains the prime focus.
Our Blessed Mother and Help of Christians - and of all people - is one of the most important celebrations of our Salesian year. We dedicate the mission to young people to her as the one who guided St. John Bosco in his call to serve youth. Her simple reminder to go out to those who are in most need led Don Bosco to spend all of his energies bringing the charism of loving-kindness to young people, especially to those who needed guidance and love. As we enter the month of May, we are also in the midst of preparing for exams, study sessions, the completion of our Spring sports program, and ultimately - graduation for our Seniors.
We give a great big THANK YOU to the many friends and families who have given their very best to St. Francis to make it the school that we are proud of.
May the month of May, the month of Mary, be a fitting conclusion to your academic year, and may we all rejoice as we say: "Mary, Help of Christians - Pray for us!"
Sincerely,
Fr. Marc Rougeau, sdb - Director

Dear St. Francis Families and Friends,
Spring has sprung and with Easter behind us, we have quickly jumped into the celebration season. For many, it is a time for celebrating first communions, confirmations, Mother's Day, and Graduations. There is anxiety and excitement about moving on to the 9th grade or college as well as a mad dash to do well in classes and on AP tests. For athletes, it is a time to PR in track and swimming, to shoot your lowest score in golf, or even hit a homerun in softball or baseball. I can also share that Mr. Dewig and his cast and crew are anxiously preparing for two remarkable performances of the "Godspell" musical this weekend - May 1-2, 2015. Both nights will be full beyond capacity and all of us will again be impressed with our students and Mr. Dewig. Thank you to the students and the parents who are part of the VAPA Boosters team. They always help with the setup, take down, selling food, selling raffle tickets, and ensuring all have a great experience.
At this time I would like to thank Mr. Walker, Mr. Kelly, Mr. Kane, and Mrs. Cynthia Baylis for a great first-ever Spring Swing Golf Tournament. We had over 80 golfers from around the Central Coast and the Bay Area come and participate. The outcomes were accomplished: to raise money for the entire athletic program and to build community. God provided beautiful weather and the committee provided a great golf experience, dinner, and raffle. In the end, all had great fun.
I also want to thank Mrs. Carmen Velasquez, Mrs. Erica Lee, Mr. Matt Ryan, and Mr. Richard Martinez for chairing a great Spring BBQ Event. This event, the last SFPA sponsored event of the year, moved across the street to St. Francis and added an alumni component and local beer/wine tasting. We sold out Thursday and had to buy more meals to prepare on Saturday. Through their committee, we facilitated another great event that raised monies for programs and services for all students. It was truly a community event, with an alumni band performing, our choir singing, our dance team dancing, and our local Hawaiian Dance Team doing the hula. We sold 700+ meals and welcomed 28 alumni and their spouses from the junior seminarian classes of the 1960s & early 70s. Four of these alumni were recognized with Golden Diplomas for celebrating 50 or more years graduation from St. Francis. The student and parent support for this event was felt by all and all had great fun! Thank you.
This week, on April 28th, we hosted our 3rd annual Spring Open House from 6-7:30 pm. On Wednesday, April 29th, we again hosted international education agents from Brazil and Salesian schools in South America to share the great people and programs of St. Francis. I will be going to Sao Paolo from May 9th-17th to visit Salesian schools and market St. Francis to other potential international candidates. It will be a whirlwind visit, but a worthwhile one to further brand and market who we are. Our vision remains true as we continue to ensure that every student is a good Christian and honest citizen of the world as well as able to attend a 4-year college. We will retain our Catholic, Salesian values and be the college preparatory school of choice with an international student population. Our students will be global citizens that lead, serve, and inspire!
After the spring musical this weekend, we will have back-to-back events occurring - Junior/Senior Prom on May 9th and the 2nd annual Concert on the Green on May 16th. We look forward to our students responsibly participating in the prom with appropriate dress and grooming. As you shop for those shoes and dresses, please make sure you can walk and dance in them and ensure that the dresses are not more than 4" above the knee and that neither the front or back expose skin. We would hate for you to spend a lot of money on a dress and then be turned away because it does not match our dress code expectations. No tennis shoes, of any kind, for young men, and don't be turned away for facial hair.
We will review the end of year expectations for seniors in the next few weeks. Mr. Walker and I will host this meeting with the seniors focusing our talk on grades, attendance, making reasonable choices, dress code for school and social events, mandatory attendance at all graduation activities, caring for one another, and the school policy on pranks of any kind. Please ask your senior the contents of our conversation to help reinforce good decision-making these last few weeks of school. Together we will get them all through happy and safe.
Currently we are collecting all of the necessary information for our Awards Ceremony this May, and we are preparing students for their graduation or their new class schedule for 2015-2016. We are also following up on 125 resident and international applicants to grades 9-11 for next year in an effort to grow the school. Historically, the school has seen 70% of the resident applicants and about 35% of the international applicants be accepted and attend our great school. Consequently, we are following up with each potential new or transfer student with our trademark "Tiffany's/ Nordstrom's" customer service. All students, parents, faculty, and staff need to be thanked, as each of you has been instrumental in this effort. Again, thank you.
On June 8th we will have the BAC set up with tables and bleachers for students to share or sell their books. This will start at 5 pm. Our current book vendor, ESCO, will not be sending anyone out because our book buys through them are so small. However, we are coordinating with them to get the necessary materials to facilitate any book returns for students who do not want to sell them to a peer. We will have MerryMart here for uniform purchase and orders on this day as well. The primary focus of our June 8th get-together is to welcome incoming 9th and transfer students. It will be the first new student Orientation for the 2015-2016 school year. It will be an ice cream social for incoming students and our own ambassadors and serve as an orientation for new parents. We will introduce all of the unique opportunities, services, and programs available for all students at St. Francis. This year's freshman parent representatives are working with Marie and me to address new-parent questions or concerns. This way, we will start out by communicating clearly and often to our new students and their families. We will also host a football meeting that night; when we have that time, we will inform you.
The Business Office is currently tallying service hours and Bingo work attendance along with preparing to close out all outstanding tuition and fee balances. Ms. Lilia Reyes will be sending out information at the start of May to conclude this year. April 30th is the deadline to register at the current cost, secure the class schedule your student would like, and to sign/accept your tuition assistance award - even if you are appealing. If we don't get the signed paperwork turned in by April 30th, we will award the tuition assistance to other families who have signed theirs and registered their student(s). Our goal is to continue to demonstrate great outcomes for all young people who choose St. Francis High School as their home during their high school years. We are grateful for your leadership and support in this endeavor. God bless and GO SHARKS!
Yours in Christ,

I don't know why you say goodbye...
Dear St. Francis Community:
Springtime is such an amazing time of the year. We have the opportunity, during this Easter season, to recognize the lessons of new life springing from wintered and withered things. Participating in the cycle of the school year as we do enables us to make similar connections. We look forward to the end of the school year, students and teachers alike, since it marks the end of some exciting things, and with things that end, we tend to look back and ponder what lessons can be learned and taken for the journey ahead.
The gospel we will read in our next all-school liturgy is the story of the Wedding at Cana. We read it every year for the feast of Mary Help of Christians, and every year I feel like I hear it anew. In my reading of it recently I recognized something I know to be true. When asked to turn water into wine, Jesus hesitates. And we can debate over that hesitation and what it means, but in that moment, I think we get a glimpse of his humanity. He responded in a way that sounded, frankly, kind of rude. "Woman, my hour has not yet arrived," he tells his mother. And then, of course, he did as she wished, as a good son does. And thus began his life of service and ministry, which was fraught with challenges and life changes-changes in his own life and the life of humanity. This is a story about Jesus, but this is our story as well, is it not-being called to something we feel almost but not quite ready to take on? Isn't this the time we need a nudge from someone we love and trust who calls us to be who we are called to be?
As we see our seniors ready themselves for the step ahead, there is inevitably some anxiety, maybe different versions of the hesitation Jesus felt. He questioned whether there would be struggles ahead (of course-John 10:31-33); he wondered whether he would experience heartbreak (yep-John 11:35); maybe he would be misunderstood (yes-John 18:35-37); whether his friends would sometimes disappoint him (oh yeah-Matthew 26:74); maybe he would feel alone (indeed-Matthew 26:40); he wondered if he would feel totally abandoned, even by God (he did feel this-Matthew 27:46); and he feared he wouldn't make it out alive (he did, of course, and gloriously so-John 20:19-20). These are some of the questions our seniors will face, and we know they will emerge because of the love and care-and nudges-of their friends, family and this St. Francis community.
And so, as we say goodbye to familiar things, things of this amazing year, we know there is hope on the horizon, for our seniors, yes, and for the rest of us. We greet the coming of spring, of summer, of things to come with a hopeful and renewed vision. We know that being called to new things can bring anxiety, and so we hesitate, but we can also look ahead to opportunities beyond what we can imagine.
Yours in Hope,
John Marheineke

From the office of the Assistant Principal of Student Affairs
I am pleased to announce that St. Francis seniors, Isabella Shahmirza and Cooper Scherr, have both been named CIF CCS Scholar Athlete of the Year. Both Izzy and Cooper competed against the best-of-the-best and won this prestigious honor. This is the epitome of what a student athlete is all about and we are blessed to have these two represent St. Francis. We will receive banners to hang in the gym to commemorate their achievement. A representative from CIF will present Izzy and Cooper with a $2000 scholarship check at our awards ceremony in May.
Thank you to everyone that participated in the 1st Annual Spring Swing Golf Tournament. We had a great turnout for the inaugural event at Spring Hills Golf Course with over 75 golfers competing. The event also featured several contests such as Closest to the Pin and Longest Drive, and a "Beat the Coach" competition, which golfers competed against Ed Kelly, St. Francis Men's Basketball Coach. The low net winner was the foursome of Martin Orradre, Chang So, Anthony Cagnacci, and Cory Shropshire, all parents of students in the Class of 2018. I want to send a special thank you to the planning committee of Cynthia Baylis, Paul Zech, Ed Kelly, Jeff Kane, Matt Ryan, Ernie Farley, David Rose, and all of the other volunteers that worked tirelessly to make this a great event. I know next year's event will be even bigger!
Spring sports are wrapping up in the next few weeks. Two of our golfers, Jason Kane and Chase Vargas, will be competing in the conference golf finals on April 28; our swim team will be competing in their finals on Saturday, May 2; track has their conference meet on May 9; and baseball and softball conference playoffs will begin on May 11. Please make sure you come out and support our Sharks in their final games and playoffs. We will have our Spring Awards Night to honor these athletes on May 17 at 5pm, so please RSVP as soon as you can so we can get a solid count for dinner.
On May 21, we will once again offer sports physicals for students. The physicals will be from 3-7 pm and will cost $25. Our athletic trainer, Mrs. Nicole Sutherland, has secured several doctors and other medical professionals for this athletic fundraiser, so please come out and support athletics and get your student athlete's physical for the upcoming year.
As a way to better serve our student athletes, I will be sending out a survey to students and parents about your experience with St. Francis Athletics. I will use this as a way to gauge what is working and what we need to work on to ensure our student athletes are having the best athletic experience that they can.
Please encourage your student athlete to attend the summer workouts that each sport has planned. We want to continue to build on the successes we had this year--champions are made in the off-season! Details and workout schedules should be coming home from the coaches in the next few weeks. Also, if your son or daughter has not enrolled in a strength and conditioning class for next year, please have them consider this either as a regular class offering or during zero period, which is an early morning workout offering four days a week. For specifics on zero period, please contact Coach Hazel or myself.
As always, thank you for all you do for St. Francis!
Blessings,
Arthur Walker
Assistant Principal of Student Affairs
