We are Easter People
As we make our way towards Easter I'm inspired, which is to say somewhat haunted by the image created by the great poet W.B. Yeats. In his iconic poem The Second Coming he uses a phrase, "slouching towards Bethlehem," a line picked up by the poet, singer, songwriter Joni Mitchell as she puts to music his poem. The reason for my feelings of haunted inspiration are complex, I suppose, but what it comes down to is this: our mortality comes to light, if we give ourselves time to consider it, in this Lenten season. We strip down a bit with our fasting and praying and giving and allow ourselves some time to be un-busy. I have stolen that image of un-busyness from a friend of mine who recently wrote a reflection on it we used for our staff retreat, by the way. But I do believe Lent is about become un-busy. Jesus was never too busy and that is why he noticed the blind man, the prostitute and the leper. He was never too busy to stop and pay attention to those most in need of his care and love.
Robert Frost, in his simple yet profound poem Time to Talk (can you tell "read more poetry" was on my list of Lenten resolutions) models un-busyness whenever his friend comes along and is in need of a little of his time. Thank you, Mr. Frost, duly noted.
In the cycle of our liturgical calendar we are enabled and challenged to reflect, especially during this coming Easter season, on those things most important - death and rebirth. Within this yearly cycle, though, we might well remember that our life is a constant drama of death and rebirth. Every decision is as much a "yes" to one thing as it is as "no" to another. Every challenging conversation is an opportunity to a death, or at least a letting go a little bit, of ego. Every night we sleep - a mini death - only to arise in the morning, alive again. Sometimes we go willingly into these little deaths, and sometimes we go kicking and screaming, but, as Easter people, let's remember that it is only in dying that we can be born to eternal life (I hope you all recognize the poet who said that!)
As we stumble towards Good Friday and stand in awe of the majestic light of the Resurrection, let us remember that in our slouching, crawling, and toddling, we are learning how to stand tall and walk confidently. Of course we are mortal and to acknowledge our mortality is essential in living a Christian life, but, as St. John Paul II reminds us "We are Easter people, and Hallelujah is our song!" Let our lives be signs and songs of praise as we celebrate the Paschal Mystery this year.
Happy Easter to you all!

From the office of the Assistant Principal of Student Affairs
From the Office of the Assistant Principal of Student Affairs:
No April fooling here...The Sharks Women's Basketball team won the CCS title for the third consecutive year! Congrats to Coach Braga and the team for an amazing season! Senior Sonja Shumake, for the second straight year, was named Player of the Year by the Register Pajaronian and surpassed the 1000 point scoring mark this season. Freshman Janiya Sevilla was also named to the Register Pajaronian all-area team.
Over Spring Break, our baseball team will travel to Las Vegas to compete in the Bishop Gorman Invitational. The Sharks will compete against the top teams from Texas, Nevada, and California in this prestigious tournament. We wish our team safe travels to Las Vegas.
All of our Spring sports have begun league play and are competing well in the very competitive SCCAL. Our swim team won their first meet in several years; our track team is off and running well; and our baseball teams are winning games against tough opponents. Please make sure you come out and support our teams as they head into the second half of their seasons.
Speaking of supporting our teams...The 1st Annual Spring Swing Golf Tournament is only a few weeks away. We are still in need of golfers and sponsors for this event that benefits all of the teams at St. Francis. The tournament will be held at Spring Hills Golf Course on April 24th and will be a day filled with great golf, great prizes, and great fun. Entry fee is $150 per golfer or $600 for a foursome; and tee sponsorships start at $150. Your entry fee includes green fee, cart, box lunch, dinner and fun contests, with prizes to top finishers. There is also a raffle with great prizes from local area businesses. Entry forms are available on the school's website and the deadline for entry is April 17th.
In May, St. Francis will again offer athletic physicals here on campus. Students will be able to have a complete physical, administered by local doctors volunteering their time, for $25. Proceeds from this will go to St. Francis athletics to help defray costs of new equipment, etc. The exact date of the physicals will be announced at a later date.
As always, thank you for your support of St. Francis Athletics!
Happy Easter and continued blessings to you and your families,
Arthur Walker Assistant Principal of Student Affairs

Zero Waste Week
The Ecology Club and Ocean Guardians welcome you to Zero Waste Week. This event will be challenging and eye opening. We are asking that each of us help to limit waste and promote sustainable ecological practices.
When we return from Easter Break, the Ecology club asks that you be mindful of the plastic and paper waste that is attributed to our packaged consumption.
Please attempt to bring your lunch in reusable containers. Here are some of the specifics of the event:
1. All the garbage cans on campus will either be removed from site or turned up side down. We are asking that each of us pack home any trash, more importantly attempt to not bring items that have waste.
2. All recycling bins will be available. If you have waste, please recycle.
3. For the lunch trucks, only one trashcan will be made available. Students and staff that eat from the lunch truck will be advised to deposit trash in this location.
4. On Monday afternoon during the very end of 3rd period, the Ecology club will be handing out reusable water bottles (w/ info sheets inside). The H20 bottles are an important part of Zero Waste Week.
5. The shaving requirements will be disregarded during Zero Waste Week. Shaving can be a waste of water. All students who participate in Zero Waste Week will not be asked to shave.
6. On Friday April 17th during Collaboration the Ecology Club will present the results of Zero Waste Week and will introduce a community member named Steve Reed. He is the director of the North Coast Federal Designation. He will share with us the process of protecting this land. (link: www.santacruzredwoods.org & youtube
7. @Principal_SF and @MisterBare twitter feeds will be giving updates and sending info concerning Zero Waste Week. Please encourage the community to check our Twitter feeds for important info.
The Ecology Club is excited about this event. We understand that it will be an inconvenience. But that is the point! We should all recognize our waste footprint and adjust our behavior to minimize that footprint.

From the Counseling Office:
All Students: If you have received a "D" or lower grade in any semester core class, you will need to repeat it in a summer school option. Cabrillo College summer schedules will be out in mid-April, but you will need to apply and complete your assessment before registering for a course. The course must be pre-approved by Mr. Cmaylo or Mrs. Green to confirm that it is a comparable course to the one being remediated. Other summer school options include BYU on-line learning courses or other high school-level summer school. See Mrs. Green or Mr. Cmaylo for more information.
AP Juniors/Seniors: AP Exams will be given during the weeks of May 5th--May15th. AP students need to be at school and in room B-4 no later than 7:50 am. Testing begins promptly at 8am. Keep good notes, take pictures of the campus, talk to admissions directors, and file the information in a safe place to be used later when you are making a decision about which colleges to apply to. If you haven't made your junior appointment with Mrs. Green, there is still time to do so-- but not for long!

Updates from the Director of IT
Last night a number of school issued iPad's were found to have VPN apps installed on them. These types of apps and services are not permitted on school iPad's which is stated in the Technology Agreement LINK. All of these student's have been referred to the Assistant Principal of Student Affairs. In short VPN apps/services allow student's to bypass the school's content filter.
