The St. Francis AfterCare is a great place where students can work or relax before sports or rides home. In its first month of operation, the program has seen 82 drop ins and served 26 different students, accounting for 62 hours of after-school study time. All St. Francis students are welcome to drop by anytime between 3:30 and 5:00pm in room H32. The AfterCare program provides a safe and productive workspace where students can do homework, access online classes, do collaborative work with other students, or just hang out. If you have any questions about the program, please contact Mr. Falcone for more details (falcone@stfrancishigh.net).

Dear Families and Friends of St. Francis High School,
We have just celebrated two very important feasts in the liturgical life of the Church: All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day. For a number of us, there is a confusion as to who gets remembered on each day. Since the feasts are so close, we have a tendency to intertwine our Saints with a capital "S"-the Saints who have official recognition by the Church, like St. John Bosco-and thesaints (with a small "s" if you will), who are very familiar to us, namely those who have gone before us in faith: our loved ones, moms and dads, brothers and sisters, grandparents, children, babies, and the nameless forgotten who have died alone and are beloved by God.

In fact, this Communion of Saints is a beautiful way to look at all who have inspired us and taught us to live out our Baptismal call. I pray that your remembrance of those who have gone before us was a memorable celebration of life for each of you and your families.
This month of November is just full of celebrations of life: Thanksgiving is coming at us at the end of the month and, of course, we are preparing for the celebration of Christmas. But wait! There's something in between to help us prepare for the Birth of Christ into our world - and that's ADVENT.
Advent is often overlooked as a liturgical season since the glitter of Christmas seems to overtake the period from November the 30th until December 24. It is important to spend those weeks in PREPARATION for the coming of Christ into our world in glory, just as we need to celebrate a new life in our own homes as a new baby brother or sister is welcomed into our family.
Try to slow down during the weeks of Advent. Look around at nature as an example of how to do this; leaves fall off of the trees slowly, the night warms into day slowly, so also our homes and lives need to be decorated slowly to prepare for the special Gift of Christ once again into our lives and the life of the Church.
Here at St. Francis, we hope to have some time for reflection and time to celebrate the sacrament of Reconciliation (confession) to prepare ourselves interiorly to welcome the Prince of Peace into our hearts once again.
Our personal lives need to be readied for the new life that Jesus is giving us; as you prepare your hearts and homes, go and PREPARE THE WAY OF THE LORD! May God bless all of your endeavors as you keep watch! We do not know the exact hour when the Lord will come to us individually or at the end of time. Let's not take God for granted. May you have a blessed Advent. (A suggested activity: Read and reflect on the Gospel for the 1st Week of Advent - Mark 13: 33 - 37.)

Dear Students, Alumni, Parents, & Friends of St. Francis:
This past month, we received some questions on Bingo service versus general school service hours for parents. I am happy to share that we have added a Bingo tab on the front page of our website (www.stfrancishigh.net). Please visit the associated pages for further Bingo details. As a reminder, all two-parent families have a minimum of 25 hours of service and one-parent families have a minimum of 15 hours of service per academic year.
In addition to the above-listed hours, if you are a freshman parent or the parent of a student receiving tuition assistance (Need-based or Merit-based), the expectation is that you will work a minimum of four Bingo nights on top of the two-parent 25 hours or the one-parent 15 hours.

Calendar Change
As you may have noticed on the calendar, the Winter Formal Dance has been moved from January 24 to an earlier date--January 17, 2015. The Winter Formal will be held at Seascape Golf Club from 7:30-10:30 p.m. This change is to accommodate two important events that will take place on January 24th. One is the San Francisco Walk For Life, an event that our Pro Life Club attends annually. The other is the Sing For Your Life event, in which Mr. Dewig and his choir participate.
All-School Liturgies We are excited to welcome to campus two visiting priests to celebrate our next two all-school liturgies. As always, parents and friends are welcome to join us if their schedule permits. On November 21, Fr. Paul McDonnell, O.S.J., will join us. He is the provincial for the Oblates of St. Joseph and currently serves at the Oblates' church on West Cliff Drive in Santa Cruz. Worthy of note, Fr. Paul will be giving a talk at St. Joseph's in Capitola on November 20, 2014 at 7:00p.m., the evening before our mass, entitled "Why am I Catholic?"
On December 8, Fr. Thomas Hall, C.S.P., will join us to celebrate mass. Fr. Tom is a Paulist priest and a retired Navy chaplain. He now resides in Monterey as a contract chaplain to the Defense Language Institute. Reconciliation will be available to students on November 19 and 20. Details will be provided to students in Theology classes.
