Yearbook Ads

Now is the time to support the St. Francis Yearbook by purchasing a business or senior recognition ad.

Showcase your business in the book that never loses its appeal! Students and their families will flip through its pages hundreds of times and cherish it for a lifetime. In addition, proceeds from ad sales are a fundraiser for the yearbook program at our school. We appreciate your support! To purchase an ad, go online to jostensadservice.com. The deadline to purchase business ads is January 16, 2015. For additional information, see this LINK or pick up a flyer in the main office.
Graduation

Congratulate your graduate by purchasing a senior recognition ad in the yearbook. Yearbook ads are a great way to celebrate student success and milestones and to reflect on the person your graduate has become. Show your pride and support your school at the same time! Visit jostensadservice.com to create your senior recognition ad. The deadline to purchase senior recognition ads is January 10, 2015. The St. Francis AfterCare is a great place where students can work or relax before sports or rides home. In its first month of operation, the program has seen 82 drop ins and served 26 different students, accounting for 62 hours of after-school study time.  All St. Francis students are welcome to drop by anytime between 3:30 and 5:00pm in room H32. The AfterCare program provides a safe and productive workspace where students can do homework, access online classes, do collaborative work with other students, or just hang out.   If you have any questions about the program, please contact Mr. Falcone for more details (falcone@stfrancishigh.net).

SFPS News and Announcements LINK

Dear Students, Alumni, Parents, & Friends of St. Francis:

The school year is in full swing as we move from the novelty of a new school year to the cooler days of autumn. As I write this newsletter article today, Halloween, I am touched by the playfulness of our student body and our staff. From exotic cats to Scooby Doo, Steampunks to Mary Poppins, our community embraces the playground and creates a nurturing home where all are welcome.

I am pleased to share that we are off to a great start. First quarter grades are in, and we have just completed a wonderfully-attended Parent-Teacher Conference night and a Winter Sports Parent Meeting. Because of our rigor and our caring staff, along with the use of all-school study and daily tutorial periods, we have reached an unprecedented level of academic success. On the heels of this observation, I am thrilled to have received the news that one of our seniors has been named a National Merit Semi-Finalist based on his outstanding scores on the PSAT exam taken during his junior year. Congratulations to Cooper Scherr on this fine honor. We also received word that one additional senior has been named National Merit Commended Student: Caroline Casper. We are very proud of these two students and their achievements! This year's PSAT was taken on October 15th.  The Math and English departments worked diligently to maintain their content rigor and standards while preparing your 10th and 11th grade students for success on this exam. We all know that one test does not define a student, but these tests are used as benchmarks for future success on the SAT and AP tests and place your student on the radar for some of America's top universities and scholarships.

On November 10, 2014, we will have our NHS Induction Ceremony led by Mr. Falcone. He will send out invitations to those students accepted for their participation in this important event.

We will have our Parent Campus Beautification Day on November 15th from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Please come help us beautify the campus for our November 16th Fall Open House the next day. Besides completing those necessary parent service hours, your assistance on this day helps us maintain a beautiful campus as the leaves begin to fall and we move toward winter.

With the research done by ISM, and our collaboration with our other Salesian schools and Dr. Denise Pope, we will be taking a true Thanksgiving holiday! There will be no classes for the week of November 24-28. Sports will continue, but, beyond those obligations, please take this time to give thanks and enjoy family. We all expect to return from this well-deserved break with renewed enthusiasm for the hard push to the semester finals prior to Christmas Break.

As all of our signage says, we are fostering excellence in that all we do.  Consequently, we want to celebrate our successes with each of you. Please continue to use the brag button on our website (www.stfrancishigh.net) and continue to support all of our students' efforts to strive for excellence. In Chip and Dan Heath's book, Switch, they call this "focusing on the bright spots." Here are some of ours:

  • We want to recognize Marissa DeVogelaere for her passion and commitment. Because of her efforts, we were able to secure an Ocean Guardians grant and are working to become an Ocean Guardian School.

  • We want to thank Mr. Dan DeWig and his ensemble cast of actors, directors, producers, and lighting techs for their fall performances in the newly-renovated St. Francis BlackBox Theater.

  • Congratulations to our women's tennis champions - again.  Our young ladies impress me more and more with their presence, poise, and their passion.

  • Congratulations to Nick Ciandro and Abigail Briley for being voted the 2014 Homecoming King and Queen. Thank you to all of the Animas members for a super fun and amazing Homecoming Week.

  • A special thanks and congratulations to our Cross Country teams and Coach Ramona Young: we are the biggest in school history and are ranked in the CCS as we move into the SCCAL Finals on November 6th at Pinto Lake.

  • Congratulations to our Iron men and women: Larissa Rocha (Cross Country and Dance), Andrea Rodriguez (Cross Country and Dance), Alexis Rodriguez (Cross Country and Dance), James Young (Football and Cross Country), and Nathan Lee (Football and Cross Country).  All 5 of these students are above a 3.0 and are participating in two varsity sports concurrently.

As part of our recognitions, I want to thank Mrs. Megan Martinelli and Mrs. Cynthia Baylis for their leadership with our 3rd annual Burgundy & Gray event. We saw a record attendance this year and record fundraising as we honored two critically important figures in our school's life - Fr. John Roche, our first Director, and Mr. David Cmaylo, Assistant Principal of Academics. We added more than 40 new ticket sales and grossed over $97,000. After all expenses were paid, we netted over $81,000. Along with this tremendous success, we garnered over $8,000 towards our $20,000 goal for a new gym sound system. Thank you to all of our sponsors, donors, auction winners, and volunteers for making this the best event ever. The Burgundy & Gray continues to grow as our signature SFPA fundraiser for the school.

Also, the SFPA Board will begin working on the Spring BBQ - an evolution of the traditional Spring Festival. This year's Spring BBQ will be held at St. Francis, instead of across the street at OLHC, and it will be paired with an All-Alumni event. It will happen on Saturday, April 25, 2015.  Since OLHC is not available this year, we want to streamline and simplify the event to be a Spring BBQ and alumni event, rather than a big festival. You will hear from your grade-level representatives for our committee meetings that will begin after Thanksgiving.

This school year we are celebrating the bicentennial of St. John Bosco's birth. On January 30, 2015, we will take the entire school to San Francisco to celebrate mass with our Salesian school in Richmond as well as the members of the Western Province. We will do this by providing transportation, by bus, to and from the celebration. The Salesian Province is providing lunch for us. Although we do not have room on our busses for extra passengers, parents are welcome to join us at SS. Peter and Paul Church in San Francisco for the mass.

Since this is the bicentennial celebration of our founding Saint, I want to share a few short excerpts from his life. When John Bosco was just 9 years old, he had a dream that unfolded his life's work: the young. In his dream, a shepherd figure - Jesus - assured him that a teacher would guide him - Mary. Indeed, this was the experience he had throughout his life.  It was on Mary's feast day - the Immaculate Conception - that Don Bosco met a homeless boy and began his outreach to the young in 1841. On that same feast day, 18 years later in 1859, he founded the Salesian Congregation - to extend his outreach to the young. In Don Bosco's final years, he would often remark, "Mary has done everything." Our school community here at St. Francis lives with that same conviction - Mary brings us here, together, for a reason...she has done everything. We are here for the young--Youth for Youth!

God bless and GO SHARKS!

From the Assistant Principal of Academics

Hello Parents and Students!

The school year continues to move along at a brisk pace.  We have completed the first quarter of our academic schedule; report cards were issued via RenWeb on October 17th.  If you have not yet had the opportunity to view and verify your student's report card, please do so as soon as possible so that we can ensure that your student is on track for success in the first semester.  Report cards at the end of the semester will consist of a hard copy that is mailed home.

Thank you to those parents who scheduled and attended a meeting with teachers during parent-teacher conferences on October 28th.  If you would like to meet with a teacher, but were unable to arrange a meeting, please contact that teacher directly via email to arrange a mutually agreeable conference time and date.

With the holidays approaching, there are only 14 scheduled meetings with each class remaining in the fall semester (as of November 3rd).  This is a vitally important time for students to focus on their studies.  Please continue to check student progress on RenWeb and encourage your student to attend tutorial on a regular basis.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding an academic issue, please feel free to contact me at 831-724-5933 x203 or by email at cmaylo@stfrancishigh.net.

Sincerely,

David M. Cmaylo

Assistant Principal of Academics

From the Assistant Principal of Student Affairs

Thank you to all of the athletes that participated in Fall Sports this year.  We had great turnouts in all sports and the future looks great for St. Francis Athletics!  Although the future looks bright, we shouldn't overlook the present success of our student athletes.   Our tennis team made school history by sweeping the SCCAL Singles and Doubles tournament!  Congratulations to four-time Singles Champion, Caroline Casper, and to Doubles Champions, Claire Casper and Meg Guild.  A special thanks to our tennis coaches, Gay and Bill Finch, for their leadership and love for our tennis players.  Also, Volleyball will play in the SCCAL playoffs; Cross Country is preparing for another CCS run; and Football will have their Senior Day on November 8th vs. Livermore Valley Prep.  Please make sure to come out and support our teams as they conclude their seasons in the upcoming weeks.

The Fall Athletic Awards will take place on December 8th (note the date change) at 6:00 p.m. in the BAC.  We will present the major awards for each sport during dinner, followed by individual letter award ceremony and team breakout immediately afterward.  Dinner will be provided, but each player is asked to bring a dessert or beverage for the event.

Although some of our Fall teams are still playing, we have begun the transition to our Winter season.  Winter offerings for athletics include Men's and Women's Basketball and Soccer, and this year, we have brought back Freshman Girls' basketball and added a Men's Junior Varsity soccer team.  Tryouts will begin on Monday, November 3, 2014. All students must have a current physical and have completed Concussion Testing done prior to participating.  Practice times and additional team information was provided at our Winter Sports meeting.  If you were not able to attend the meeting, please contact the coach of the team for additional information.  Our winter coaches are:

Ed Kelly-Men's Basketball  (finaliv@yahoo.com)

Randy Braga-Women's Basketball  (bragahoops@gmail.com)

Vince Monroy-Men's Soccer  (monroy@stfrancishigh.net)

Jazmine Ancira-Women's Soccer (ancirajazmine@gmail.com)

Our Annual Alumni Basketball and Soccer Games will take place on Nov. 21, 2014.  Co-ed Soccer will start at 4:00 p.m., followed by the Women's basketball game at 5:30 and Men's at 7:00 p.m.  Come join us for a great evening welcoming back our alums and watching them compete against our varsity teams.

In an effort to increase communication relating to attendance, you will receive automated notifications from my office when your son or daughter has an unexcused absence or is tardy to school.  The RenWeb-generated reports will be sent out at 10:00 a.m. daily and will be sent to the email we have on file.  After the second instance, you will receive a text and voice notification informing you of the tardy or absence and a request to call me to discuss the unexcused tardy or absence.

Our school policy states that on the first instance, a student receives a verbal warning; on the 2nd and 3rd instances, a student is assigned a lunch detention; and the 4th  (and each subsequent) tardy results in a Saturday detention.  Please refer to the St. Francis Student/Family Handbook for the complete policy on attendance, or feel free to contact me via email (walker@stfrancishigh.net).

Thanks again for a great 1st quarter!

Financial Aid:  Seniors and one parent should go onto thewww.fafsa.ed.gov website to sign up for a PIN (Personal Identification Number) now.  The PIN is used to sign documents, including the FAFSA (Free Application for Financial Student Aid), that all senior families should complete.

REMEMBER: All college-bound seniors and their parents should complete the FAFSA form.  College and Federal financial aid, grants and scholarships can not be given out unless the FAFSA has been filed. The filing date for the FAFSA is January 1-March 2nd 2015.  Parents should plan on filing taxes as early as possible;  the FAFSA form should be filed early based on "estimated" (from last year's taxes) income information and corrected once taxes have been filed.  More information will be coming in December.

Various sites across the Santa Cruz County will be holding special workshops on "How to fill out the FAFSA" form.  Information will be posted on RenWeb News for locations and times as they come in.

Scholarship information for seniors is being given out by Mrs. Green as the information comes in.  Students should listen carefully to daily announcements, read their e-mails carefully, and pay attention during classroom visits by Mrs. Green. A list of current scholarships will be located on the St. Francis website under the Counseling and Guidance link. Students may also pick up most application forms or URL's* for scholarships that have been announced to students in Mrs. Green's office.

*It is also recommended that students to go online towww.fastweb.com orwww.cappex.com to pull in a more extensive data base. A list of web search engines is available in the counseling office, on the counseling web site, and in the Parent Night booklets.

Juniors and Sophomores took the PSAT in October.  The results will be returned in early January. At that time, Mrs. Green will hold a review of results with the sophomores and juniors in their various Theology classes.  Parents will have access to each student's individual results, and what those results mean, when the students bring home the information.

Juniors:
Mrs. Green will schedule individual parent/student appointments beginning in February to begin the college search and application process.  For more information, please go onto the St. Francis website to download the Student/Parent College Counseling Guide book.  It is filled with information that you will need to understand how the college search and application process works.

Grind Out Hunger Campaign

Each year we devote a portion of our time and energy focusing on the reality of hunger in our local area and our role in contributing to a solution. Feeding America put out a study recently in which they identified staggering numbers: In Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito Counties, the main local areas from which our students come, 27.1%, 24.4%, and 28.1% are hungry or food insecure (cited in this article by Elizabeth Limbach in "Edible Monterey": http://ediblemontereybay.com/online-magazine/winter-2012/edible-community-hunger-in-the-land-of-plenty/).

When Danny Keith, Executive Director or Grind Out Hunger, came to speak to us last month, He refrerenced the above numbers. Another visitor at that same assembly, and 11th grader at Archbishop Mitty High School named Matt Marani, came to us to offer an opportunity to help.

Matt has an already successful high end line of olive oil called Tutti Torani, which he started when he was 12 years old. He has started a second line of olive oil that he will be selling through schools to support Grind Out Hunger. All of the proceeds of the sale of that olive oil - ALL of the proceeds - will come back to benefit the school and Grind Out Hunger. Olive oil is a great gift for Christmas, and this will have a label personalized for St. Francis and explaining the support for Grind Out Hunger. Students will come home on Friday with order forms for the olive oil and purchases can be made through November 20. Olive oil will be available to take home before we leave for Christmas break.

Any questions about the Grind Out Hunger campaign? You can reach Mr. Marheineke at marheineke@stfrancishigh.net or ext. 135 on campus.
