Dear St. Francis Families and Friends,
Spring has sprung, and with Easter behind us, we have quickly jumped into the celebration season. For many, it is a time for celebrating first communions, confirmations, Mother's Day, and graduations. There is anxiety and excitement about moving on to the 9th grade or college as well as a mad dash to do well in class and on AP tests. For athletes, it is a time to PR in track and swimming or shoot your lowest score in golf or even hit a homerun in softball or baseball. I can also share that Mr. Dewig and his cast and crew put on two remarkable performances of The Robber Bridegroom musical. Both nights were full beyond capacity, and all of us had fun laughing with our students. Thank you to Mr. Dewig and the students as well as the parents who are part of the VAPA Boosters team. They helped with setup and take down, food and raffle ticket sales, and ensured all had a great experience.
Currently we are collecting all of the necessary information for our Awards Ceremony this month, and we are preparing students for their graduation or their new class schedule for 2014-2015. We are also following up on 130 resident and international applicants to grades 9-11 for next year in an effort to grow the school. Historically, the school has seen 65-70% of the applicants so we are following up with each potential new or transfer student with our trademark "Tiffany's/Nordstroms" customer service. All students, parents, faculty, and staff have been instrumental in this effort, so thank you. Speaking to this, on May 5th we hosted 14 Chinese Education Consultants. On my recruiting visit to China, I met with the VP of 3W International as well as many representatives of some of the biggest student placement agencies throughout China; on May 5th we had representatives from most of those agencies visiting us. The VP, Cissy, also came as their tour guide and liaison. They met with Ms. Marheineke, Mr. Walker, and me as they toured the campus to visit classrooms, take pictures of the campus, and eat the food our three current Chinese students eat from the Carmona's lunch truck. It was a whirlwind visit but a worthwhile one to further brand and market who we are. We will start marketing to Europe, Russia, and Brazil this summer in an effort to grow students from around the world. Our vision remains true as we continue to ensure that every student is a good Christian and honest citizen of the world as well as able to attend the college of his or her choice. We will retain our Catholic, Salesian values and be the college preparatory school of choice with an international student population. Our students will be global citizens that lead, serve, and inspire! Mr. Walker and I met with the seniors on May 8th while the rest of the school participates in speeches and elections. The focal points of our talk with the seniors were grades, attendance, making reasonable choices, dress code for school and social events, mandatory attendance at all graduation activities, caring for one another, and the school policy on pranks of any kind. Please ask your senior the contents of our conversation to help reinforce good decision making these last few weeks of school. Together we will get them all through happy and safe. It is with some sadness that I report that Ms. Brockschmidt will not be finishing out the year or returning next fall. We appreciate her leadership and commitment to serving our students. She had a direct impact on student academic support and success that often leads to higher student retention, and she was a leader in facilitating curriculum development. We want to keep her and her daughter in our prayers as she transitions into the next phase of her life, and we transition forward with her replacement. Currently, Mr. Walker and I will divide up the duties of her office to finish out this year. If you have any questions about academics, books, schedules, challenge exams, etc. from the Assistant Principal of Academics office, please contact Ms. Lina Silva, and she can direct your question to either Mr. Walker or myself. Ms. Silva is available at 831.724.5933, extension 222. On June 2nd, we will have the BAC set up with tables and bleachers for students to share or sell their books. This will start at 3 pm. Our current book vendor, ESCO, will not be sending anyone out (at this point) because our book buys through them were so small. We are coordinating with them to get the necessary materials to facilitate any book returns for students who do not want to sell them to a peer. We will have MerryMart here for uniform purchase and orders. Mr. Walker will send out the updated uniform choices for next year very soon, and we know you will be happy with our evolution. Current uniforms will be grandfathered in as we look to update our brand, logos, and colors. That night we will host a football meeting for all potential football families in B4 as well as a meeting for graduated seniors who will be attending the Grad Night Trip in the Art Room. The Senior Grad Night is an unsanctioned event that parents organize for their graduated senior. These parents will meet in E1 that night, and as we confirm the time we will let you know. This year Mr. Cmaylo and Mr. Bare took our students on a science field trip to Costa Rica, and it was a great success. I have been meeting with our World Language teachers, Ms. Savannah Gray and Ms. Azalia Felix, who are looking at creating a field trip to Spain in the summer of 2015. This would be a 2 to 3 week cultural experience along with studies at a Spanish university. When we complete the entire proposal, we will begin advertising for this opportunity. Mr. Cmaylo and Mr. Bare shared their valuable experience with the entire staff at a faculty meeting last week and committed to taking students on science field trips every other year. Stay tuned for more information on these exciting opportunities for all of our students! Patrick Lee

EASTER BREAK IN COSTA RICA 2014
Mr. Cmaylo, Mr. Bare, and Phil Martinelli (Class of '09) joined 27 students on a weeklong adventure in Costa Rica. Our group flew from San Jose to San Jose (California to Costa Rica that is) and met up with a group of 18 students from Salesian High School in Richmond, CA. Waking up Sunday morning after the long day of travel, our students were able to attend Easter Mass together at a beautiful cathedral in San Jose before heading out to the rainforest.
In the Sarapiqui River region of the Heredia province, students were able to take beautiful hikes through the rainforest, perform hands-on observations of fruit bats, gauge the overall health of the river by sampling micro-invertebrates, and take a thrilling white water raft trip down the Sarapiqui River. The next destination for our group was Arenal Volcano National Park where students learned about the processes of tectonic plate movement and volcanic activity. They then had some time to relax and play in the natural volcanic hot springs.
The group then headed to the Monte Verde Cloud Forest Preserve near the small town of Santa Elena. Our students did some community service, helping to clear the trails in this beautiful natural setting before heading out to the frog and snake garden to observe some of the more poisonous organisms of Costa Rica in a safe environment. The Monte Verde portion of the trip was capped off by an amazing zip-line experience above the cloud forest canopy.
It was a wonderful and memorable trip for our students and a great time was had by all. Mr. Cmaylo hopes to make this a biennial trip, with the 2016 trip focusing on the coastal areas of Costa Rica.

Wake up; it's still Easter!
Wait...What?
In the Catholic Church, we celebrate Easter as a season, not just a one-day experience. It is appropriate for this, the event that marks the high point of our church calendar, to be celebrated for fifty whole days, ending with the celebration of Pentecost. And what we realize is that it's really hard to party for 50 days. But, as one of my mentors explained to me, it's not about partying for fifty days, it's about training ourselves to live as people of the Resurrection. St. John Paul II (I love saying "Saint John Paul," by the way) famously said, "Do not abandon yourselves to despair. We are the Easter people and hallelujah is our song." Every day of Easter, and every day as Easter people (even after we celebrate Pentecost), we can wake up and say "Hallelujah!" But that begs the question: in a troubled world, why would we be inspired to be so joyful?
Why?
Easter, and the Hallelujah joy we celebrate as followers of Jesus, is a big deal. It is the resurrection event that marks the victory of Jesus over that reality of death, but it also reminds us of our capacity to survive the deaths we experience along the road of life- the loss of a relationship, a humiliating experience, the loss of a job, the ending of a school year. These experiences, big and small, these times in our lives when we lose something we value, feel daunting. We get may get discouraged or feel rudderless because the things and relationships that we value become part of us. When they change, part of us dies. And yet we are called to always and everywhere live as Easter people. Which begs the question...how? When we experience trouble, what do we do? Where to we turn?
How?
Jesus answers this while speaking to his troubled disciples towards the end of John's Gospel. When he is speaking about his impending departure, he encourages them not to be afraid, but to take heart in his example: "I have told you this so that you might have peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world." (John 16:33) It's hard to capture his tone here, but he seems rather matter of fact. He's essentially saying to his homeboys and homegirls: I got this.
While that's not deep theology, it's a practical reality to those of us who believe: whatever trouble or challenge we endure, whatever issue it is that we struggle to overcome, whatever relationship situation we can't seem to resolve - Jesus offers us peace. That peace comes, he says, in him - in his example, in his love, in his power, and in our lived relationship with him, the living God.
In this season of Easter, we will surely grieve the loss of some things, the changing of relationships and the dynamics of our lives adjusting to shifting realities. It is the norm in life and, maybe especially, in a school culture. With the end of another school year, another class will graduate and go on to continue their life and journey elsewhere. We will miss them and the families whose relationship to the St. Francis community will change.
But we will live on as a community, recognizing in this Easter season that through a lived relationship with Jesus and a constant commitment to caring for one another, we are an Easter people. Let us live our Hallelujah and find joy and Peace in the risen Christ.

Soccer Donations
While in Costa Rica, our tour guide Tony Nunez informed us about his childhood friend. They are from a small town on the west coast; Tony's friend manages a soccer club for the youth of the town. The club, "Academia de Fútbol Barranca," has a profound need for gear. While in Costa Rica, Mr. Bare donated the soccer ball he brought; that ball gave the club a grand total of two soccer balls. Tony also reminded us that the average income of a Costa Rican is $700 per year. Here is how we can help. If you have any moderately used soccer gear (shin guards, cleats, socks, balls, goal keeper gear, and/or any other items) to donate, please contact Mr. Bare or Izzy Shahmirza. We are hoping to send the gear out in the 1st week of June. St. Francis should be able to gather a great assortment of gear for these youth players. Thanks for your efforts. Pura Vida!!

Spring Sports Banquet
Important Date Change! Unfortunately, due to numerous schedule conflicts, we have had to move the spring sports banquet for track & field, baseball, softball, swimming, and golf to Tuesday, May 27th at 6pm. We know that this falls during final exams, but as you can see by the end-of-year calendar, there aren't many options for dates. We apologize for this inconvenience, but we hope that since you have to eat dinner anyway, you will join us! Because of final exams, we will keep the banquet short. We will start dinner promptly at 6pm with the program of awards to begin at 6:15pm. We will wrap up with short breakout sessions with the coaches and will aim to finish by 7pm.
This dinner and awards presentation will take place in the BAC and we invite all families of spring athletes to attend. Dinner will be provided, but we are asking members of the baseball team to please bring a dessert to share!

YouthSERVE
When you were young, did someone tell you weren't old enough to pursue your dreams?
YouthSERVE animal lover, Marissa, had dreams of volunteering at the Santa Cruz Animal Shelter. Smart and determined, 15-year-old Marissa lacked the adult supervision needed to volunteer on a consistent basis.
That all changed when YouthSERVE partnered with Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter to train adult volunteer mentors to work alongside youth volunteers. Shortly after establishing the program, Marissa was signed up and volunteering multiple times each week alongside her new friend and mentor, Kathy.

Since July 2012, Marissa has...
-
Volunteered over 100 hours alongside her mentor
-
Socialized with hundreds of animals to prepare them for their adoptive homes
-
Led a toy drive to collect toys for animals in need at the shelter

Homestay Opportunity
Dear St. Francis High School Parents,
For the 2014-2015 school year, St. Francis High School will again admit students from China to our school. This new program is part of our Salesian mission and part of our strategic vision to grow the school. We have partnered with 3W International to market our great school to qualified and motivated students in Asia, with the goal to expand marketing to Europe, Russia, and Brazil this fall. Unlike other private schools who board on campus, we will work in partnership with a firm that organizes the homestay component for these new international students. We anticipate as many as 18 Chinese students in grades 9-11 this fall, and we will expand that number each year until we reach our goal of 15-20% of our total student population being international students from all over the world. All of our international students will need homestay families, and currently we have registered 11 young men and women.
Before we open up the homestay opportunity to the local parishes and greater community, we want to give our St. Francis High School families priority in this meaningful program. For your consideration, host families will receive $1,000.00 per month for the 10 months the international student lives with them. In return, host families will provide meals, transportation to and from school and events, a bedroom for each student, and a wireless internet connection. In addition, host families will be required to complete a safe environment training program and a background screening. Medical insurance, uniforms and other campus expenses are covered through the tuition and fees paid by the individual family in China.
If this program is of interest to you and you wish to receive more information and details on logistics, please email mavisc@threew.com the following information and we will add your family to the interest list.
1. Family name 2. Students' names and grades in Spring of 2014 (if applicable) 3. City of residence 4. Languages spoken in your home 5. Experience with international student or exchange programs
Please understand that this is not a commitment on your part at this time but an interest in your family to engage in a discussion about this wonderful opportunity. Thank you for your support of St. Francis High School, for your support of this critically important program, and for your continued prayers for all of our students' success.
Yours in Christ,
Marie K. Marheineke
