Reflections from the Director

I hope that all of you had a wonderful time with your families and friends during the Christmas/New Year holidays.  Since our weather does not look too wintry at present, I have a hard time thinking of Christmas scenes of snow and all that goes with it. So, in order to be more current with this time of year, I think that the recent feasts of St. Francis de Sales, our Patron and our Father and Founder, Don Bosco need to be center stage.

Our January Saints make us more conscious of our Salesian Heritage - both in our name Salesian (from St. Francis de Sales) and in what we can do for our world today, namely evangelization, in the style of Don Bosco. Evangelization seems to imply for some that we are called to go to street corners and tell everyone that they need to believe in God, ... or else! Evangelization really calls us to be prophets for our times, not only in word, but most of all in deeds. Both St. Francis de Sales and St. John Bosco were men of dreaming and of action.  They call out to us in a special way to be people of the future as well as of the present.

The "preaching" by example is the loudest way to evangelize.  So, as we continue with all the activities of this semester: games, rallies, college entrance exams, homework, and many other day to day things, we are called to do all of this with the kindness and gentleness of St. Francis and the dynamic spirit of Don Bosco.

As one of my Salesian brothers used to say, quoting St. Francis de Sales:

"A Sad Saint is a Sorry Sort of a Saint"  --   so, keep smiling!

Great Opportunity to Get Involved--Earn Service Hours--St. Francis High School NEEDS YOU!

With winter sports underway, the school is alive with basketball and soccer games. Check the schedule online (LINK to Athletic Calendar) and come support our Sharks. The teams are off to a great start, but we would like to see more students and parents at the games. Whether your student plays a sport or not, our school thrives on parent involvement and now more than ever we need YOU!

At the St. Francis Parent Association (SFPA) General Meeting on February 13th we will have a Booster table for you to sign up to help. The game support is an easy way to stay involved, make friends with other parents, and complete your annual service hours.

Stop by the table to say "Hi," sign up for a game, or two, and pick up a winter sports calendar. We will be selling the SHARKS PRIDE winter sports program as well. The booster board will be there to answer any questions you might have and we will be there to invite you to take a more active role in your child's school. Our next Sports Booster meeting will be Wednesday, February 19th.

Come join the fun!

A Popular Author Reinforces Denise Pope and Helps Us Rethink Our Beliefs About Education

by Kirsten Brockschmidt, AP of Academics

This school year, we have talked about Denise Pope's message to rethink our approach to "doing school."  In a recent book, staff writer for The New Yorker and five time The New York Times bestselling author, Malcolm Gladwell, offers evidence that reinforces Ms. Pope's suggestion.  In David and Goliath, Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants, Gladwell offers the opportunity for a reexamination of some long held beliefs about education.  In this, and the next two newsletters, we will examine some cherished beliefs.

Belief 1--Going to the best university you can get into offers the best chance at success.

This seems like such a given, it is almost difficult to even consider the possibility that it is not true.  However, Gladwell tells a story and provides some interesting statistics which he believes challenges this belief.  The story involves a woman who had been a perfect student while in high school.  Always at the top of her class, she never received anything less than an A and had the highest scores possible on all of her AP exams.  She also had a lifelong passion for science.  During her senior year, all she hoped for was admission to her first choice of Ivy League school.  She got it.

She also got a surprise when she found a new level of competition, for her abilities, that had never existed before.  She had always been the best.  This new, especially elite, academic group that was her new basis for comparison was too much to handle.  She no longer measured up in her own mind.  She changed majors, dropping out of science.

Gladwell found that statistics reveal an alarming frequency to this transition among students attempting to study science, and certain other majors, at the best universities.  Specifically, Gladwell quotes a study done by the University of California that concluded "the likelihood of someone completing a STEM* degree--all things being equal--rises by 2 percentage points for every 10-point decrease in the university's average SAT score."  Gladwell reasons, "the smarter your peers, the dumber you feel; the dumber you feel, the more likely you are to drop out of science."

Denise Pope told our students to be careful about looking for the "best" university.  Instead, she urged us to look for the "best fit" university.  Sometimes there is a difference.

*STEM refers to Science Technology Engineering and Math

Coming Next Month: Challenge the belief that smaller class size is better and an essential component of the best learning environments.
