Dear St. Francis Parents,
The St. Francis Parents Association is very excited to invite you to attend the second annual fundraiser, The Burgundy & Gray. The event will take place on the evening of Saturday, October 5, 2013, at Seascape Golf Club in Aptos. It promises to be a fun and lively celebration!
While St. Francis continues to strengthen the rigor and relevance of its academic program, the high school is committed to expanding its Performing Arts Program, Athletic teams, and Extracurricular offerings. To do that, we need your support. To enable families to send their children here, our annual tuition is intentionally kept affordable. Tuition covers approximately 74% of the actual cost of educating each student. This gap is filled with generous support from people like you.
We hope you will consider donating an auction item to our event. This donation could be in the form of a gift certificate, monetary donation, or physical item. With your tax- deductible donation, your name or company will be displayed in the event program, on the auction table and on our website. Please return your donation by September 24, 2013 to the school office, and include any information we can use to properly acknowledge you or your business. If you have questions or need assistance, please contact Megan Martinelli by email at megan@ruders.org or by phone at 831-722-1341.
Another way for parents to support the event is through "Sign Up Parties." You decide on an event or party that you would be willing to host. You pull in other friends if you prefer additional financial and planning support. The night of the auction, there will be an area where these parties are "advertised" and parents are encouraged to sign up to attend. Those who sign up make their checks out to St. Francis High School. You and the other hostesses pay for the party and write it off as a donation to the school. Once you have the list of those attending, you follow up with an invitation closer to the actual date. Examples of Sign Up Parties include a kayak party with lunch, any theme dinner, a cooking class, a bicycling or sailing adventure, or dance lessons. Sign Up Parties are truly a win-win pro you bring together other St. Francis parents for a fun event; and the school benefits financially. This year we would like to have between 5-10 sign up parties available at The Burgundy and Gray. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to call Cynthia Baylis at 831-763-7994.
Please look for your invitation to arrive in the mail soon. The St. Francis Parents Association encourages you to join us on the journey to fully realize the vision of St. Francis High School through your support of our fall benefit, The Burgundy & Gray.
Sincerely yours, Ed Moakler, SFPA President, and Megan Martinelli, Burgundy & Gray Event Chair

Animas: August Reviews and September News
Kairos was a successful endeavor for the 47 seniors who attended from August 18-20. And while a full description of Kairos would be impossible, suffice it to say the seniors have been profoundly moved by the experience. Thank you to the entire retreat staff and to the school community for supporting this important program! Pictured below are the retreatants from Kairos 6 at Monte Toyon in Aptos.

Triduum is coming! Triduum is coming!
September 18-20 is our annual St. Francis Triduum celebration. Triduum is a term used to describe a three-day experience of prayer, usually associated with a major feast or holiday. Salesian schools all around the world celebrate Triduum at the beginning of the school year to launch the theme of the year and prepare our hearts for the journey ahead. The schedules of the three days will be slightly out of the ordinary, so pay close attention to the calendar. Highlights of the celebration include Juan Carlos Montenegro from the Salesian Missions who will be speaking to the student body on Wednesday, September 18, and the Triduum Mass and Triduum Fun Day will be celebrated on Friday, September 20.
Our school-wide theme this year...Living the Dream!

Counseling Department: September News All Student Reminders
Attention all parents of students who completed a summer school course this summer:
-
Please remember to send a copy of the summer school transcript grades to Mrs. Green so that the grades may be posted on your student's transcript. This is a very important step in ensuring that credit is given for the work that your student did.
-
If your student is still "In-Progress" with the course, be sure to send in the grades as soon as possible when the course is completed and grades are posted to you. For questions or concerns, feel free to contact Mrs. Green ASAP.
Students with Documented Learning Issues
If your student has been tested (or retested during the summer) for a learning issue or disability and has documented information regarding needed accommodations, please contact Mrs. Green ASAP.
Information for Seniors
This month, Ms. Green will be delivering college information to seniors via one of their classes, and she will be encouraging them to meet with her to discuss individual college plans during lunch, after school, or during a study hall period. Parents are welcome to join such meetings. Seniors considering applying for early admission should see Ms. Green during early September.
In October, students will be invited to participate in after-school college application workshops for the CSU, UC, and Common Applications. Dates will be announced via morning announcements and classroom visits.
The "Senior Profile" is coming due. Seniors should remember to work on carefully as it will be important for college applications, scholarships, and career paths. This is due to Ms. Green on Wednesday, October 16.
UC and CSU applications will be available online in October and November at:http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/how-to-apply/apply-online/index.html for the UC and at www.CSUMentor.edu. Many private universities (491 currently) use the "Common Application" which can accessed online atwww.commonapp.org. Seniors applying to private and out-of-state universities need to request paper applications online or by mail.
Seniors and their parents should mark their calendars for Wednesday, September 25 at 6:30 p.m for the Senior Parent Night Program, which will be held in the Art Room (E1). This year our program will again be focusing on the college application process. Seniors and their parents will be able to get the latest information on how to apply to the UC and CSU systems and private institutions online, how to prepare a great personal statement, how to obtain college recommendations, and much more.
Seniors have the opportunity to sign up for the following SAT and ACT test dates. When signing up, students should send the results to the colleges to which they are applying by filling in the college code on the SAT and ACT registration.
