Dear Students, Parents/Guardians, and Friends of St. Francis High School,

The upcoming school year is just around the corner. Throughout my life, this time of year has always been one of my favorites. The weather is warm, vacations are concluding, plants and vegetables are ready to harvest, and the fall activities in leadership and sports are starting to percolate on campus. I am literally thrilled to see all the Back-to-School displays and colorful stacks of supplies in the stores - not just to buy for my two sons but for the excitement known as the start of a new school year. For me, this is as exciting as the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.

As a "Seasoned Salesian Educator," my present enthusiasm differs from my youthful sense of expectation only in its focus. There is still a vibrant sense of personal renewal, but as the President/Principal, I am keenly aware of our responsibilities to provide our students with an exemplary educational experience - one that is relevant, memorable, and Salesian in every respect. The excitement of a new school year brings hope and renewed commitment to mentor each of our students and their families to fulfill their child's spiritual, academic, athletic, service, performance, and leadership aspirations.

The sense of renewal extends to our campus as well. The movement and renovations to offices and classrooms is expected to be on schedule for the start of school. The front office was reconfigured and painted, the gym floor redone, and the lakeside switchbacks have been planted. While the staff and I have been reviewing data, examining policies, and assessing resources as we plan our programming for the coming year, our facilities team have been painting lockers (our school color) and sprucing up our facilities in anticipation of the new school year.

In June, as I do every year, I attended a professional development session at Don Bosco Hall at UC Berkeley that brought Salesian administrators together from various works in the Western Province.  Also in attendance from St. Francis were Mr. John Marheineke, our Coordinator of Youth Ministry, and Ms. Kirsten Brockschmidt, our Assistant Principal of Academics. The program is called SES-Salesian Education Seminar -- an annual conference designed to educate more fully to the maintenance of Salesian identity on our high school campuses.  Sprinkled throughout our time together were presentations on the history and vision of St. John Bosco as well as the practical application of his educational philosophy in the 21st century; as is typically the case, we each came away with a renewed zeal for the educational process as articulated by Don Bosco and an ever-increasing admiration for the saint.  He was, indeed, a visionary about institutions (parochial schools, high schools, Boys & Girls Clubs, missions, and colleges) that mean to serve youth.

Certainly, all Salesian works, by intentional design, measure their work's success by the degree to which they are in touch with the concerns and interests of the youth and the degree to which they respond with loving care to the challenges faced by our young people today.  More evident here than in any private or public school setting, we gear all that we do to the educational mission of being fully present to our students in their journey towards adulthood.

In the middle of the 19th century, St. John Bosco observed, that it was not enough that a mentor/teacher loved one's students; rather, that the students must know they are loved.  Even now, after decades of educational research during the late 20th century, the number one factor in student success, more than school funding, demographics, or other indices of differences in schools, is whether the students believe their teachers care about them.  It is my observation that our students genuinely feel this care. From your comments and my observations, students like it here, and they like their teachers.  Most significantly, students know their teachers like and care about them.  By personal experiences, by countless anecdotes, and by objective survey, we know that our students see the genuine, abiding, personal-yet-professional respect and care we have for them.

Before I conclude my welcome, I want to celebrate some St. Francis success stories:

1.The class of 2013 had a 100% graduation rate and college acceptance rate. They earned $2.9 million in scholarships

2. Over the past ten years, 99% of St. Francis graduates attend college, with 85% choosing to attend a 4-year university and 14% choosing a 2-year college.

3.   Annually, 25% of the total student population has a 4.0 GPA or better.

4.   100% of our students participate in at least one or more extra/co-curricular activities. These activities include leadership, service, clubs, theater, music ministry, cheer/dance, or athletics.

5.    Annually, 75% of the total student population participates on one or more athletic teams. With that said, 54% of all varsity student athletes maintain a 3.0 GPA or better.

6.   Our students test well above average on the AP, PSAT, and SAT exams. Our six-year SAT scores are 110 points higher than the national average, and the five-year AP pass rate is 78%. This is 19% higher than the national average.

7.   Congratulations to Ms. Denise Colosi and her AP Calculus students and Ms. Beth Madia and her AP English Literature students for a 100% pass rate on their AP exams last May.

I hope all students are wrapping up their summer reading assignments. All students must have completed their reading by the start of school and be prepared for the follow-up assessments. Some AP students have assignments due on or before the first day of school. If you have any questions about the reading assignment, you may review the complete details on our website. I am also very excited to have the author of our all-school read, Doing School, Dr. Denise Clark Pope, speaking to our students and parents in September.

Please read this newsletter carefully - it contains important back-to-school information, including calendar and schedule information as well as important upcoming events and updates from our Counselor, Dean of Students, and the two Assistant Principals.

Finally, I wish to extend a warm welcome to our new incoming students and their families. You are about to become part of a remarkable community of Salesian students, and I look forward to the opportunity to get to know each of you in the years ahead.

This year's school theme is "Living the Dream."  This year, each of us will get the chance to live the dream by leading, serving, and inspiring our communities - both our St. Francis High School community and our home town communities. It is an honor and a privilege to work with each of you at the greatest high school in the universe.

I hope to see all incoming freshman parents at the Freshmen Parent Orientation on August 12th and all other families at the Booster BBQ on the 16th and/or the Back-to-School Night on the 27th.

Yours in Christ,

Counseling Information

Seniors:  Remember to work diligently on your Senior Profile this summer.  This is an important document that will drive many engines for you.  It will help to narrow down your search for careers and colleges by helping you understand your preferences.  It will be used for scholarship searches and, of course, will be used by your recommenders for your letters to college admission and scholarship programs.

For those seniors planning on applying to the University of California or to private institutions, you should also be working on your personal statement using either the UC  or common application prompts.

Volleyball Tryouts - Update!

Because many members of the senior class will be away on the Kairos retreat in August, volleyball tryouts for all volleyball players will be moved. The new dates are August 15, 16, and 17. On the 15th and 16th, tryouts will be after school, beginning at 3:15. Time on the 17th is TBA.

Back-to-School Booster BBQ on Friday, August 16

If you have been wondering, "Who are the Boosters, and what do they do?" look no further!  The St. Francis High School's Boosters are a vibrant part of our school community who are a group of parents and community members who support St. Francis athletics through donating, volunteering, and purchasing a St. Francis Booster Pass. Boosters are integral to the running of events at St. Francis, and we rely on them to staff the concessions and ticket tables at all of our home athletic events.

The Boosters will be sponsoring a Back-to-School BBQ on Friday, August 16 from 5:30-7:30pm.  Come to the St. Francis campus, eat great food, and meet new people. This is a social event for parents only, which includes delicious food and beverages, provided by the St. Francis Boosters. This is a chance to meet other St. Francis parents, so if you are new to the school or an old friend, please come by and help grow our community. The St. Francis athletic department staff, including coaches, will be on hand to meet-and-greet with families. The VAPA (Visual and Performing Arts) Boosters will also be on hand, so if you would like to meet your student's future coaches, this would be a great time.

St. Francis Football Families
The St. Francis High School football ranks will have a different look this fall as the Sharks will only field a Varsity team in 2013.

"Several factors play a role in this decision, but our main concerns are the low number of projected participants and interest in the program at this point in time," said St. Francis President and Principal, Patrick Lee. "The lack of interest has caused insufficient numbers for us to field a JV team, but the school is still 100% committed to sustaining and growing the 11-man football program."

Lee identified approximately 38 players for JV and Varsity during the 2012 season, but last year's Varsity squad finished its schedule with just "17 or 18, which was a concern for the safety of our student-athletes playing both ways."

"I understand and support the decision," said Assistant Principal of Athletics and Activities, Jennifer Watson. "But I think it's really unfortunate for all the people who created and supported the St. Francis football program."

Watson and Head Coach Adam Hazel both had hoped to get commitments from at least 35 players for the coming season to keep the JV and Varsity teams alive, but that has been a challenge. As a result, St. Francis has chosen to field a Varsity team only for the 2013 football season. Consequently, the SCCAL Athletic Director's and Head basketball Coach Ed Kelly met to craft a new "modified" schedule to provide for student-athlete safety, competitive equity, and a chance to bolster the future of SFHS football. St. Francis will volunteer at the SCCAL jamboree but not play. Play the same pre-season schedule, and then play 3 league games. Please refer to the updated football schedule online.

In spite of this challenge, the school is committed to sustaining and growing its football program. To support student learning and the football program, the school hired a new Dean of Students and assistant football coach, Mr. Art Walker; he comes from La Lumiere School in La Porte, Indiana where he was Dean of Students and Head Football Coach for the last five years.

The school will also be providing field turf for its football/soccer field and baseball infield for the 2014-2015 school year. The plan is to partner with local parochial school flag football and baseball teams, NFL flag football teams, pop warner football, and travel baseball organizations to share our fields and facilities. "It is part of our strategic vision to be a resource for the Watsonville community," said Patrick Lee. He continued to share that he, along with the board and diocese, are committed to growing the school's population 15% over the next five years.

Yours in Christ,

Missing Documents

Some students have not submitted forms required for their attendance at St. Francis.  If that is the case for your student, it is critical that this be addressed prior to the beginning of classes.  Please note: students may not attend classes until each of these forms has been submitted.  Beginning August 15, 2013, any student whose file continues to lack these forms will be required to sit in the Main Office, not attending classes, until the forms are submitted.  Please help us with this critical detail of your student's attendance.  If you have any questions, please contact the Main Office.

Parking Permits

Students who drive a car to school need to have a parking permit.  The form for a parking permit is available in the Main Office or online.  In September, the Dean will begin ticketing cars that lack a parking permit issued by the school.

Locks for Lockers

Students are required to purchase a Masterlock combination lock for use on each locker issued to them.  These are color-coded and master-keyed and must be purchased from Ms. Madrigal in the Main Office.  Locks are $5 each; a student who loses his or her lock must simply purchase a replacement lock from Ms. Madrigal during the year. Please note that locks other than those issued by Ms. Madrigal may not be used in school lockers.

Locks may be purchased anytime in the Main Office (8:00am-3:30,pm Monday through Friday). Freshmen must purchase locks no later than the day of Frosh Orientation, August 12, 2013.  All other students can purchase locks before classes begin on August 15, 2013.  Students are encouraged to purchase their locks prior to the first day of school, even though they will be available for purchase on the first day of school.  Returning students may use locks purchased in prior years.
