Staffing News for 2013-2014
Fond Wishes...
...to Mrs. Stephany Marks, who has accepted a position at Harbor High School. We wish her the best of luck.
...to Mrs. Andrea McCandless, who is awaiting the birth of her first child in August. She will be tackling the most important job in the world - parenthood.
...to Mrs. Kate Medina, who will be undergoing a bone marrow transplant this summer. Given the constraints of the procedure and the need for her to remain close to Stanford University for the first 100 days after the transplant, Mrs. Medina will not be able to return to St. Francis next year. We hope that she will be able to reconnect with the St. Francis community in the spring.
...to Mrs. Megan Stevenson, who has moved to Texas with her family.
And a Shark Welcome to...
...to Ms. Kirsten Brockschmidt, our new Assistant Principal for Academics. St. Francis High School welcomes new Assistant Principal of Academics: Ms. Kirsten Brockschmidt. With Ms. Madia's announcement that she would not be returning to St. Francis but rather return to her roots at Archbishop Mitty, the school completed its search for her replacement. Ms. Brockschmidt will be a southern California transplant come this June, but has come to vacation in the Monterey Bay area regularly since childhood. She brings a wealth of experience as an English teacher in Seoul, South Korea, a US patent attorney, adjunct professor at UC Irvine, middle and high school AP/IB Science teacher in LAUSD, and a District Science Coach for teachers and students. While teaching at Granada Hills and Saugus High Schools, she also coached Mock Trial and Speech Debate clubs. Her teams experienced success at the local and regional levels.
We want to welcome Ms. Kirsten Brockschmidt to our St. Francis community and invite her family to lay strong roots that will flourish as much as our great school does. Her official start date will be July 8, as she will be going through training, transition, and Salesian formation at the end of June.
...to Ms. Azalia Felix, who will be teaching Spanish 1 and 2. Ms. Felix joins us from Southern Californis, where she worked with EL students.
...to Ms. Savannah Gray, who will be teaching Spanish 2 Honors, Spanish 3, Spanish 3 Honors, and AP Spanish Language. Ms. Gray comes from completing her undergraduate degree at CSUMB and her teaching credential at Humboldt State.
...to Mr. Sean Pyne, who will be teaching Latin. Mr. Pyne is well-versed in ancient languages and will be teaching and building our Latin program as well as supporting the growth of the Mandarin Chinese program.
...to Mr. Art Walker, our new Dean of Students. Mr. Walker comes to us from a prep school in Indiana. He will be teaching AP English Literature and will be working with the football team to support Coach Hazel.

At graduation, the school community recognized significant accomplishments by its graduates. Four graduates were specially recognized.
The Valedictorian addressed the graduating class at its commencement ceremonies. He/she is chosen by the administration of the school according to specific criteria: the student's cumulative grade point average; the strength of the student's academic schedule; comments solicited from the student's teachers; the degree to which the student displays the values and ideals of the school, both in class and outside of it; and the ability to speak to a large audience. The valedictorian is not necessarily the student with the highest grade point average.

Pro-life Club
Just wanted to let you that this past week we delivered the Pro-life Club donations to the Pregnancy Resource Center and the Siena House. We had a last minute donation so that we were able to increase our donations to $400 to each organization. A few students went with me to make the donations. (See the photos below) At the Pregnancy Resource Center we were were given a tour by the Office Manager. At Siena House we were invited to meet the women and their babies who are currently living at Siena House and the students even got to hold some of the babies. It was an wonderful experience for the students to see where their donations are going and how they are used. Thank you for letting us purchase and sell the Guard Life T-shirts this year. I am very proud of the students and it was a great way to empower the students to make a difference for others.

Back-to-School Booster BBQ on Friday, August 16
If you have been wondering, "Who are the Boosters, and what do they do?" look no further! The St. Francis High School's Boosters are a vibrant part of our school community who are a group of parents and community members who support St. Francis athletics through donating, volunteering, and purchasing a St. Francis Booster Pass. Boosters are integral to the running of events at St. Francis, and we rely on them to staff the concessions and ticket tables at all of our home athletic events.
The Boosters will be sponsoring a Back-to-School BBQ on Friday, August 16 from 5:30-7:30pm. Come to the St. Francis campus, eat great food, and meet new people. This is a social event for parents only, which includes delicious food and beverages, provided by the St. Francis Boosters. This is a chance to meet other St. Francis parents, so if you are new to the school or an old friend, please come by and help grow our community. The St. Francis athletic department staff, including coaches, will be on hand to meet-and-greet with families, so if you would like to meet your student's future coaches, this would be a great time.
