St. Francis Kayak Trip #3
Led by Mr. and Mrs. Cmaylo and Mr. Suarez, 44 students in the sophomore Biology and AP Biology students went on the 3rd annual St. Francis Kayak trip at the end of April. Mr. Cmaylo noted that it was a great day with beautiful weather. Harbor seals and their pups as well as sea lions, otters, sea stars, living sand dollars, cockles, herons, white pelicans, and jellyfish were viewed. A highlight of the day: the discovery that it takes six St. Francis students to sink a kayak.

Continuing Enrollment
Reminder: Continuing Enrollment: All St. Francis families are reminded that a student must maintain acceptable grades and show continuing progress towards graduation in order to enroll in classes in the fall. Students whose GPA is below a 2.0 for the semester will be reviewed carefully as to their continued enrollment at St. Francis; in some cases, students will be disenrolled by action of the school. Also, students who have failed classes and are therefore behind in their progress towards graduation must take summer school classes in order to regain those units. These remediated classes must be completed by August 15 or a student may not enroll in classes for 2013-2014. Exceptions to this policy are made only in extraordinary circumstances and as a result of appeal to Ms. Madia, Assistant Principal for Academics.
Reminder: Continuing Enrollment and Other Obligations: A student's financial account with the school must be up-to-date or he/she may not enroll for Fall 2013. Similarly, students who have not satisfied all their detention assignments or other sanctions imposed by the Dean's office will not be enrolled in Fall 2013. All students are to contact Ms. Stevenson, Dean of Students, to resolve any outstanding disciplinary issues.

Baseball Team Travels to Vegas
The St. Francis men's baseball team faced some tough competition in Las Vegas during Spring Break as the team played in the Bishop Gorman Tournament. Opening the tournament against host Bishop Gorman, the Sharks were competitive with last year's #1 nationally-ranked team who won a 7th-straight NV state championship and won 40 games. The 4th inning saw a few errors by the Sharks and they fell to the Gaels, 9-3. For their second game, the Sharks faced Calvary Baptist, also state champions from Shreveport, LA and the Cavaliers were too much for the Sharks, topping them 14-2. On day three of the tournament, St. Francis was focused on winning, and they came out swinging for the fences. Tied in the top of the 8th, senior Dillion Houser hit a 2-run home run to lead the Sharks to a 5-3 victory over Cyprus High School from Magna, UT. The Sharks finished off the tournament with a 11-3 loss to Jesuit High School out of Sacramento, who are currently ranked 6th in NorCal. Overall, the trip was a big success with the team taking in the sights of Las Vegas and also visiting UNLV and taking a tour of the UNLV athletic facilities.

Counseling News from Mrs. Green, Academic and College Counselor
Seniors: Congratulations to the seniors on their many college acceptances and for the grants and scholarships that have been awarded. Seniors are reminded to sign their financial aid SAR and return it to the college they will be attending, along with other forms that need to be returned to the college of their choice. If seniors have questions about financial aid or housing, they are encouraged to contact those offices. Many universities require that fees be paid for housing, orientation, and registration, so seniors should make sure those are taken care of ASAP to ensure space is available. Seniors are also encouraged to contact the colleges and universities that they will not be attending once the final decision has been made.
Juniors: Remember that summer is the perfect time to research colleges and careers. A few good resources include www.collegeboard.com, www.assist.org, and www.csumentor.com. These programs are designed to help students select majors and college campuses that are the right "fit." Juniors are encouraged to take advantage of visiting colleges when on vacation or traveling around. On those visits, keep good notes, take pictures of the campus, talk to admissions directors, and then file the information in a safe place to be used later when making a decision about which colleges to apply to.
Juniors who did not take the May SAT may still register for the June testing by going on www.collegeboard.com; however, a late fee will be charged if you register after May 3rd. The last testing date before summer is June 1st for the SAT and June 8th for the ACT www.actstudent.org Those students planning on going to a UC may also want to take two subject tests, one math (Mathematics Level II) and one other if going into a science, math, engineering, or technology major. Juniors can also register over the summer for one of the testing dates in early September, October, or November for a second/third taking of the exam.
AP Juniors/Seniors: AP Exams will be given from May 6-15. AP students need to be at school and in room B-4 no later than 7:50 AM. Testing begins promptly at 8 AM. Students must wear their regular uniform during testing days and are expected to return to class each day after the testing is completed.
All Students: This is a brief reminder again, that students need to continue working to maintain and/or improve grades. Students who have received a "D" or "F" in any core course, for any semester grade, should repeat those courses in summer school. Core courses include English, Modern Language, Math, Social Studies, and some Science classes. Please keep in mind that although a "D" is a "passing" grade for high school, it is not college recommending. Therefore, summer school is necessary if students are planning on applying to a four-year college or university!
See Mrs. Green ASAP to file the appropriate paper work and learn about the various summer school possibilities available to you.
Remember that final exams are almost here. Take your review process seriously. Exams count as a large percentage of your final semester grade. If you need some pointers on how to study more effectively for your exams see Mrs. Green soon.
