Dear Families and Friends,

It is my privilege to share with you the exciting Next Steps for St. Francis High School. For me, it is a welcome transition into spring with Battle for the Paddle, Easter, AP testing, and a wonderful time for celebrating a new pope; I am hopeful for this progressive direction in the Church: a pope from outside of Europe, one who has a passion for soccer, and one who has taken the name of Pope Francis I.

For me, this first year as a Shark has validated the strong Salesian charism present on our campus. The students, parents, staff, and teachers all show a love for and a commitment to the educational philosophy of our patron saint. Fr. Esteban Ortiz, SDB from Rome, commented on this when he visited us last month. I know we will all continue to grow in our faith and grow our community.  Now, I am excited to share with you some of the many excellent outcomes that are sustaining and growing our great school.  We are well on our way to being the school of choice for students and families committed to success.

  • The 5-year SAT average for St. Francis is 1608. This is 110 points higher than the national average.
  • The 4-year AP pass rate of a 3 or higher is 66%. This is 48% higher than the national average.
  • 25% of the students have a 4.0 or better GPA.
  • 26% of the student-athletes have a 3.0 or better GPA.
  • 46% of the upperclassmen are full members of the California Scholastic Federation (CSF).
  • 38% of the upperclassmen are members of the National Honor Society (NHS).
  • 9% of the seniors are Nationally Commended Scholars.
  • 100% of the students participate in annual Christian Service Projects.
  • 100% of the students are involved with extra-curriculars.
  • This fall, St. Francis won a league title in women's tennis.
  • This winter, the women's basketball team won their first CCS title.

Within this framework, we are committed to prepare students for the dynamic challenges of an ever-changing world while remaining grounded in Catholic values. Now more than ever students need to master not only subject knowledge and 21st century skills like critical thinking, creation, collaboration, and oral and written communication, but they also need a moral compass. Our highly qualified, expert staff mentors each young person to master the rigors of class as well as build the confidence he or she needs to be a faith-based leader in the community.

In 2013-2014, St. Francis High School will be changing to a 7-period schedule. This period schedule allows for more honors and AP classes, expanded language options, and blended learning opportunities that will only benefit our students' learning experience and improve their success rate as they move on to higher education and life. The addition of a Learning Resource Center will provide a warm, safe place for students to work collaboratively and independently. We will also be enhancing our athletic program by expanding our dance program and continuing the cheerleading program through the winter, as well as adding a men's tennis program in the spring of 2014.

The school, with the Board's leadership and support, has committed to offering merit-based scholarships as well as need-based tuition assistance and that we will grow the amount of tuition assistance offered each year. Along with expanded assistance, we are expanding the territories we will serve through van-service transportation. We will launch a newly expanded and intuitive website this spring and will continue to expand our communication through traditional, website, and social media platforms. Our collective goal is to enhance our communication and provide expanded customer service. In all, the value proposition continues to grow during our Next Steps.

Finally, as I stated at the well attended Parent Enrichment Night in January, there will be a "$0" tuition increase for the 2013-2014 school year. There will be a slight increase in the fees. The increase comes in two forms: iPad/technology fee increase and the introduction of a mandatory Annual Raffle Drawing. The iPad deployment increase goes from $10 a month to $30 a month as was shared last spring by Mr. Mathews. In total, it is $240 fee increase. Next year, we are eliminating the Magazine Drive/Sale. In lieu of it, we will have the mandatory Annual Raffle Drawing (ARD) at $360 a year. All families will have the option to recoup the $360 raffle ticket fee by selling the tickets. The total increase in fees for the 2013-2014 school year is as little as $20 a month or as much as $50 a month, depending on whether you choose to sell the Annual Raffle Drawing tickets. From my experience, the raffle tickets often sell themselves since there is a total prize package pay out of $10,500 for the ARD.

As previously stated, I am hopeful for the progressive direction our church is taking, and I am equally hopeful for our Next Steps. There is something truly extraordinary about St. Francis High School: family spirit is a tangible part of our community and is palpable once you walk on our beautiful campus or meet one of our amazing students or staff members. Your commitment, support, and participation is valued and appreciated; you have made, and continue to make, the right decision for your child. St. Francis High School is the best place to provide young women and men with the necessary formation to be captains of industry, champions of social justice, innovative thinkers, and ethical leaders in our local and global communities. As our school wide theme states, let us all "Bring Joy to Our World."  God bless and Go SHARKS!

Yours in Christ,

Mr. Lee Signature

Planning for 2013-2014

Students Returning Next Year

With their third quarter report card, St. Francis families of current freshmen, sophomores, and juniors received re-registration information for the 2013-2014 school year.  All families returning to St. Francis next year are asked to complete the re-registration paperwork and pay the re-registration fee by April 19.  This allows for the school to plan appropriately and to create class schedules.  It is critical that this re-registration information and fee be submitted on time.

Financial Savings for 2013-2014

St Francis High School is offering a Student Referral Discount of $150.00 for referring an incoming (non-sibling) 9th grade or transfer student. This is a one-time credit off your tuition account balance and is subject to administrative review/approval. There is also a Multiple Student Discount of $500.00 to families with more than one concurrently attending student. This one-time credit will be applied on the October payment (or at the start of the school year if tuition is paid in one annual payment) and will be evenly distributed across the remaining tuition payments, one credit per family. There is a 3% Tuition Payment Savings for payment made in full of all tuition and fees for 2013-2014. These will be further articulated with dates on the school financial contract.

Semester Exams for Spring Semester 2013

The spring semester final exam schedule will be emailed to all students and families on Monday, April 15.  This information will also be available on the school's Edline page and website on this date.

Honors/AP Placement: All students who applied for honors or AP courses for the 2013-2014 school year were notified of their placement, via email, by Ms. Madia on March 25.  Any questions regarding honors or AP placement should be directed to Ms. Madia by Wednesday, April 10.  As a reminder, all honors/AP placement is conditional, based on a review of second semester report cards.

D and F Grades: All students need to continue working to maintain and/or improve grades.   If a student earned an "F" as a semester grade, this grade must be remediated in order to earn the credits necessary for graduation.  All "F" grade earned prior to the first semester of 2012-2013 must be remediated by June 15, 2013.  All "F" grades earned during the 2012-2013 school year must be remediated by August 15, 2013.  If there are questions about this, please contact Ms. Madia or Ms. Green.

Students who have earned a "D" in any core courses for any semester grade should repeat those courses in summer school.  Core courses include English, modern language, math, social studies, and science classes.  Please keep in mind that although a "D" is technically a "passing" grade for St. Francis graduation, it is not college recommending and, in the case of UC and CSU systems, does not qualify as a passing grade in the course.  If your student needs to make up a course during the summer, he or she should contact Mrs. Green to insure proper credit.  Courses not pre-approved by Mrs. Green or Ms. Madia will not count for St. Francis credit.

Planning on Summer Classes?

Students who are considering enrollment in classes (online or in the classroom this summer) should meet with Ms. Green or Ms. Madia to obtain the necessary paperwork if they have not already done so.  If a class is to be considered for inclusion on the student's transcript to meet graduation requirements, pre-approval by Ms. Madia must occur.  Please refer to the Student-Family Handbook for additional information.

End of the Year Events and Graduation

Please consult the following link for a list of year-end activities and graduation events for the Class of 2013. This document will be shared with the seniors at their class meeting on April 12, 2013.  Please review this document to join us at many of these events as we honor this year's graduates.

Special Notice about Graduation

The commencement exercises for the Class of 2013 begin at 10:00 AM on Saturday, June 1st in the Borina Athletic Center.  Doors to the BAC will open at 9:30 AM, with priority seating allowed for those with special physical needs (i.e., those using walkers, wheelchairs, etc.).

Grad Night at Disneyland

Parents of seniors may be contacted by other parents regarding their senior's participation in a trip being planned to Disneyland after gradation.  Please note that this opportunity is not sponsored by the school, nor will there be St. Francis staff on the trip serving as supervisors.  We are not opposed to students enjoying themselves at Disneyland, but families should be aware that this is not a school-sponsored or school-organized trip.

Father-Daughter Evening for St. Francis Girls on Saturday, April 13

Please join us for a Father/Daughter evening of miniature golf and ice cream on Saturday, April 13 at 7:00 PM.  The evening will be held at Neptune's Kingdom Miniature Golf at Santa Cruz Boardwalk, and the cost is $15 per father/daughter couple or $20 for a father with two St. Francis daughters.  Golfing will occur in groups of 4-5 people, with ice cream to follow from Penny Ice Creamery.

A "father" can be a father-figure or significant adult in the student's life, or a St. Francis student can be "adopted" by another father/daughter from St. Francis.  Reservations must be received by April 5, 2013 to ldvmdv2@yahoo.com or to the St. Francis office.  Payment must be received by 8:00 AM on April 8 to the school office.  Checks should be made payable to SFCCCHS with "Father/Daughter," and cash should include a note with the names of the participants.

Look for a mother/son evening on Mother's Day weekend!

Junior Retreat on Thursday, April 18

Thursday, April 18 is the Junior Ekklesia Retreat. This is an opportunity for each student to recognize the place to which he or she is called by God, the community, and his or her own gifts. Ekklesia is derived from the Greek term "called out," and was first used to describe members of the Church in its early days. Juniors are given the opportunity to reflect on how their personal gifts enable them to recognize their calling. This retreat falls within the time frame of a regular school day. This year the retreat will be held at Koinonia Conference Center, 1605 Eureka Canyon Road, Corralitos. Permission slips and additional information about the logistics of the retreat will be coming home with Juniors after spring break.

Sharks' Baseball Travels to Las Vegas

The Sharks' varsity baseball team will be traveling to Las Vegas over the Easter break to play in one of the top baseball tournaments in the country at Bishop Gorman High School. St. Francis will have a tough opening game as they face host Bishop Gorman, the #1 ranked team in the country, on April 3rd.  Also in the pool with St. Francis and Bishop Gorman are the Cavaliers of Calvary Baptist High School from Shreveport, LA and the Knights of O'Gorman High School from Sioux Fall, SD.  Currently ranked #1 in the SCCAL, this tournament will be a true test of the Sharks' talent. Good luck St. Francis!

Breakfast of Champions

St. Francis hosted the first annual Breakfast of Champions on March 21st for varsity student-athletes who excel both on the playing field and in the classroom.  Student-athletes who played a varsity sport in the spring 2012 or the fall and winter of this year and earned a GPA of a 3.0 or higher were invited. A total of 86 student-athletes qualified for this recognition, and Athletic Director Jennifer Watson spoke to the group of honorees.  Mr. Ryan, Ms. Silva, Ms. Bowling, and Mr. Farley prepared an amazing hot breakfast for everyone.  Thank you to all of you for your help and thank you to the student-athletes for being such great representatives for St. Francis!

Women's Basketball Wins First CCS Title in Program History

Senior Kim Hammill led the women's varsity basketball team to their first CCS title in women's basketball history by scoring the first and last buckets of the game against Pacific Collegiate. Hammill's 3-pointer from the far right corner severed a tie with 14 seconds left in the game and lifted the No. 3 St. Francis women to their first CCS title, with a 47-43 win over the top-seeded Pumas at Notre Dame de Namur University.

Sophomore sensation, Sonja Shumake, turned the dagger by hitting the first of her 1-and-1 free throws with 3.3 seconds left. But it was Hammill's shot -- a 3-pointer from the right baseline that became open after the Sharks made several passes -- that changed the game.

"I knew I had to shoot it, and I was open and it felt right and it went in," said Hammill, who also hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 2:15 to go to tie the game at 43. She finished with eight points. Fellow senior Lauren Price, a sharp-shooting and driving force for the Sharks (16-12), led them with 19 points and Shumake added 10.

Congratulations to the team for bringing home their first CCS title!

St. Francis Students Attend the Northern California Junior Science and Humanities Symposium

From March 14-16, seniors Noah Craney and Leah Freeman and sophomore Izzy Shamirza, along with science department chair David Cmaylo, attended the Northern California Science Symposium at U.C. Berkeley.  Over these three days, the students heard nationally renowned scientists speak on their work, visited research facilities, met university students and research scientists, and heard research presentations by other students.  Noah, Leah, Izzy, and Mr. Cmaylo came away from the experience impressed with all that they heard and saw and excited about bringing the ideas from this symposium to St. Francis.

St. Francis Students Perform: The Fantasticks and the Spring Choral Concert

Save the date for two upcoming special events highlighting our Performing Arts Department.  On Friday, April 19 and Saturday, April 20, the Performing Arts Department will present the musical, The Fantasticks, and on Saturday, May 4, the Spring Choral Concert will highlight our choir.  Look for more details coming soon!

The Annual Spring Festival

The annual Spring Festival, a critical school fundraiser, will be held on Sunday, April 28.  The event is held across the street from the school on the grounds of Our Lady Help of Christians.  For more than 50 years, families have come together at this annual event for food, fun, games, and music. Proceeds from the Spring Festival fund various campus improvements each year and, just as significantly, reduce tuition costs for all St. Francis families.

A committee of the SFPA has met regularly in the months that lead up to the Festival, and this year's chair, Pam Flynn, and her many volunteers look to repeat the success of last year's event.  As with everything, your help is needed, and this is another opportunity to earn service hours.

Recently, under a separate mailing, you should have received Festival tickets as well as more information about you can help by attending, being a sponsor, and/or making a donation to the auction event at the Festival.

Save the Date: Burgundy & Gray 2013 on October 5, 2013 Auction Shark

Greetings, SFHS parents! It's time to start planning for the 2nd Annual Burgundy & Gray, scheduled for October 5, 2013 at the Seascape Golf Club. If you enjoy planning events, fundraising for worthwhile programs for all of our students, and growing St. Francis, then you are invited to attend the first planning meeting scheduled for Tuesday, April 9th at 5:30pm in Room B4 (Heritage Room). Megan Martinelli, chair of this event, welcomes your participation in helping to make the 2013 Burgundy & Gray another resounding success!  Last year's team grew our prior events by more than 100%.  You can complete all of your annual service hours through your involvement with this one event. The Burgundy & Gray is one of two major fundraising events done annually at St. Francis, and the success of these events helps defray the costs of program expansion and helps keep tuition affordable.
