Congratulations to the CCS Champion
Women's Varsity Basketball Team!
CCS Champions
This past Friday night, the women's varsity basketball team beat Pacific Collegiate to bring home it's first CCS Championship in Sharks history!  Come join us as we cheer them to victory in the first round of the Nor Cal playoffs this Wednesday, March 6 at 7pm here at St. Francis.  The women will take on Turlock Christian.
With Profound Gratitude
TexasIt is with mixed emotions that we share with you that Ms. Megan Stevenson, Dean of Students, will be moving to Texas with her family in June.  On one hand, we are thrilled for Ms. Stevenson and her family to have this exciting opportunity to be close to family and begin a new chapter in their lives;  at the same time, Ms. Stevenson's presence on campus will be sorely missed. During her ten years at St. Francis, she has served in a variety of capacities including Dean of Students, Director of Student Activities, Physical Education Department Chair, Class Moderator, and PE/Health teacher, just to name a few.  In all of her roles, Ms. Stevenson has conducted herself as a Salesian educator and a true professional.  As the Dean of Students, she has one of the most challenging jobs on campus, ensuring that our student community is safe and meets our Salesian expectations.

As one can imagine, that is not always easy or appreciated, but it is critical to ensuring that our students are in a nurturing environment that graduates individuals who are good Christians and honest citizens. Ms. Stevenson is a master teacher who cares about students and high quality student outcomes.  She holds herself and her students to high standards, and they tend to exceed them.   We wish Ms. Stevenson and her family the best of luck as they begin this next chapter in their lives, and we know that she will always remain a Shark at heart.
Re-registration for 2013-2014
St. Francis families of current freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are asked to commit by April 19 to their students returning to St. Francis for the 2013-2014 school year.  This allows the school to plan properly, create class schedules, and to prepare more fully for next year.  In the coming weeks, each St. Francis family of a freshman, sophomore, or junior will receive a separate mailing with a commitment form in it that holds a spot for your student(s) for 2013-2014.

St. Francis Surfers Succeed with the Santa Cruz Scholastic Surf League Surfing
St. Francis surfers Paul and Luke Colosi and Shelby Robinett competed in the fourth SCSSL (Santa Cruz Scholastic Surf League) surf contest at Pleasure Point recently.  These students, who surf for the Santa Cruz Mountain Team (Scotts Valley and SLV), did a great job and achieved some of the best results of the year. Shelby made it to the semifinal in women's longboard, and Paul and Luke made it to the finals in longboard and body board, both finishing 5th.

Course Selection for 2013-2014: The course selection process for 2013-2014 has been completed.  Students will be notified of honors and AP course placement by the end of March.  Any questions about placement and course selection should be directed to Ms. Madia.

Battle for the Paddle is Fast Approaching!
B4P
Students have been preparing for weeks for the upcoming "Battle for the Paddle" on Thursday, March 14 at 7pm in the BAC.  Each class is formed into a team that competes against each other in races (i.e., egg toss, five-legged-race, etc.), and the highlight of the evening is always each class's group dance, in which at least 25 members of the class perform a 10-minute choreographed routine.  Each class is also judged on creativity and effectiveness of decorations of the gym, class spirit, class color's presence (that's where those colored t-shirts come in!), and the degree to which the parents attend, cheer, and dress in class colors!

We invite you to attend, to dress in your student's class color, and to cheer in support of your student's class.  Tickets are limited (each student may purchase up to two) and must be purchased by March 11. On March 12, any remaining tickets will be for sale on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please note: no tickets will be sold the night of the event.  Join us on this historic night, the third annual evening class competition that includes a parent component!

Sponsorship Opportunities
St. Francis will be offering sponsorship opportunities for men's baseball and women's softball this spring. Sponsorship signage will be available for the outfield fences on both varsity fields. The signs will be 4'x5' and working with Athletic Director, Jennifer Watson, you will be able to custom design your signage for your company or business. Single fields will be $500 for this season only. We will be running a special promotion and are offering both varsity fields for $800. Please contact Jennifer Watson for more information at watson@stfrancishigh.net. Additional information can be found here.
Seniors Cody Parker and Clancy Ryan Honored By National Football Foundation CodyandRyan
On February 14th, St. Francis seniors Cody Parker and Clancy Ryan were each honored with a college scholarship sponsored by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. Cody and Clancy were joined by Coach Adam Hazel at a luncheon at the Santa Cruz Elks Lodge where the two seniors received their awards. The awards were based on a combination of academics, athletic achievement, and community service to Santa Cruz County and are awarded senior football players who will be attending college in the fall of 2013.
St. Francis Introduces the Breakfast of Champions
Student-Athletes
St. Francis will be hosting a breakfast to honor student-athletes who excel not only on the playing field, but also in the classroom. The first Breakfast of Champions will recognize varsity athletes who hold a cumulative GPA of a 3.0 or better. Student-athletes will receive certificates as well as scholar-athlete patches. Invitations will be mailed home in March for this event.
Marketing Update: Name Change Proposal
Currently, a proposal has been put forth to the Board of Directors as well as the Members regarding a name change from St. Francis CCC High School to St. Francis High School, Salesian College Preparatory.  The belief is that this name more clearly articulates our school charism, places us more evidently within a system of schools known worldwide, clarifies our academic rigor, and markets our success as a Salesian school underneath the four pillars of home, school, church, and playground. The school community will be kept updated on the progress of this proposal; if you have any questions, please contact Mr. Lee.

The Annual Spring Festival is Fast Approaching

Save the Date: Burgundy & Gray 2013 on October 5, 2013 Auction Shark

Greetings, SFHS parents! It's time to start planning for the 2nd Annual Burgundy & Gray, scheduled for October 5, 2013 at the Seascape Golf Club. If you enjoy planning events, fundraising for worthwhile programs for all of our students, and growing St. Francis, then you are invited to attend the first planning meeting scheduled for Tuesday, April 9th at 5:30pm in Room B4 (Heritage Room). Megan Martinelli, chair of this event, welcomes your participation in helping to make the 2013 Burgundy & Gray another resounding success!  Last year's team grew our prior events by more than 100%.  You can complete all of your annual service hours through your involvement with this one event. The Burgundy & Gray is one of two major fundraising events done annually at St. Francis, and the success of these events helps defray the costs of program expansion and helps keep tuition affordable.

Checking Grades online: Parent Partnership

Edline
Article 6

To echo what was stated at the September General Parent Meeting with Br. Al Vu, parents are strongly encouraged to partner with the school. One way to do that is to use their Edline accounts and regularly check their students' grades on Edline (Edline.net). Know what your student is doing well, and what s/he needs help with...and follow up with him or her daily.

Parents can also keep aware of assignments and other important class-related issues through the "Calendar," "News," and "Content" sections on individual class Edline pages. All students received an orientation in August about the use, and usefulness, of this online program; students can also assist their parents in utilizing their accounts.

Grades for each class are updated on Edline on the first and fifteenth of each month, and they can be reviewed at each class' home page in the "Grade Reports" folder under "Contents"; or from "My Content" on the left side of the page in the "Private Reports" section.
