Social Media: Awareness and Responsibilities and
a State of the School Address
On February 7th, Mr. Brian Barreto will speak to the entire student body about Social Media: Awareness and Responsibilities. That evening, he will present the same talk to our parents. Mr. Barreto is an external affairs and social media expert, and he currently is in charge of external affairs for California American Water. He worked for the DNC to help elect President Bill Clinton, spent eight years working in the White House on external affairs, and then moved onto work on Hispanic Outreach for the entire country. He is an engaging speaker who is excellent with student as well as adult learners. The Parent Meeting will begin at 6:00 pm in the BAC. His talk will go for approximately 45 minutes with a Q & A Session afterwards. The Principal will also provide a State of the School address and the "Next Steps" in our strategic vision. He, along with our two Assistant Principals, will articulate growth and expansion in academic as well as athletic programs for the 2013-2014 school year. This is a meeting you do not want to miss!

Parent Partnering Commitment for 2013-2014
Important Notice
A young person who attends St. Francis High School is challenged to develop his/her whole person through a Catholic, Salesian context. For this to occur, there has to be a special bond between the parent(s)/guardian(s) - as primary educator(s) - the students - and the school. This special bond is a partnering between all three to journey with the youth: Youth Ministry. The 2013-2014 expectation will be that a representative parent/guardian from each family will attend the required number of meetings. For 9th grade: three of four Parent Association (PA) general meetings and 10th-12th grades: two of three PA general meetings per year. The meeting dates will be published with your school financial contract. Failure to attend the minimum required number of meetings will result in a fine ($50.00 per meeting). This partnership is in place to encourage our parent(s)/guardian(s), students, faculty, and staff to journey with the young men not only in the classroom, but in the entire sphere of the St. Francis family community. This practice has been successfully implemented at other Salesian parochial and high schools effectively and has shown tremendous growth in effectively communicating with our partner families as well as providing high level parent education nights.

Financial Savings for 2013-2014
Student Referral Discount
St Francis High School is offering a Student Referral Discount of $150.00 for referring an incoming (non-sibling) 9th grade/transfer student. This is a one-time credit off your tuition account balance and is subject to administrative review/approval. There is also a Multiple Student Discount of $500.00 to families with more than one concurrently attending student. This one-time credit will be applied on the October payment (or at the start of the school year if tuition is paid in full at start of year) and will be evenly distributed across the remaining tuition payments, with there being one credit per family. There is a 3% Tuition Payment Savings for payment made in full of all tuition and fees for 2013-2014. These will be further articulated with dates on the school financial contract.

February 6 Our Sophomore Koinonia retreat will be held on February 6. Koinonia is a Greek word that means "community," and has been used since the early Christian days to denote a communion of persons marked by fellowship and service. This year, the retreat will take a different shape than in the past. Sophomores are asked to come to school at the regular time, dressed for a day of service in our local community - comfortable clothes and closed-toed shoes. The class will depart in small groups to various locations and spend the day in service, followed by a guest speaker and a reflection back at school. Transportation and lunch will be provided, and students will be dismissed at 2:10pm. Contact Mr. Marheineke with any questions.

Congratulations to Caroline Casper!
Sophomore tennis standout, Caroline Casper was recognized on January 14th at halftime of the women's basketball game when her banners were unveiled in the BAC. Casper, the SCCAL women's tennis champion for 2011 and 2012 has only lost one match in two years. She swept the SCCAL championship match this year, 6-1, 6-1. She was presented with special recognition by Kat Brown (Class of 2009), former Shark and women's volleyball star at Cal. Brown recently broke the Cal school record for most career blocks (509) against UNC in the first round of the NCAA tournament. While at St. Francis, Brown led the Sharks to the state finals in 2006 and 2008. Casper was joined on the court by her family and was honored by the many family and fans who shared this moment with her. Congratulations Caroline!

Help the Sharks and Earn Some Parent Hours
Two of the jobs that we need help with is the running the scoreboard and keeping the book for basketball games. These are usually for the freshman and JV teams. It can seem like intimidating jobs, but they are fun, once you know how to do them! If you are interested in learning how to keep the book or run the scoreboard, please email Athletic Director, Jennifer Watson, at watson@stfrancishigh.net

Save the Date: Annual Spring Festival
Sunday, April 28th
Dear St. Francis Parents,
With spring right around the corner, there is much work happening already to prepare for Saint Francis' Annual Spring Festival which takes place on Sunday, April 28th. As a fellow parent, I am excited to chair and develop the festival to support the SFPA's fundraising efforts. You, too, can join in and support our efforts.
The SFPA assists in fulfilling needed items at the school and, even more importantly, aids in keeping tuition costs significantly down. We are blessed by our collective ability to provide St. Francis students with a first rate Catholic, Salesian college-prep education with reasonable tuition costs.
We need your help with this major fundraising venture. Here are a couple of ideas on how you can help:
1. You can attend and work the Festival on April 28th
2. You can sponsor the festival
3. You can donate items to the drawing
Sincerely,
Mrs. Pam Flynn

Checking Grades online: Parent Partnership
Edline
To echo what was stated at the September General Parent Meeting with Br. Al Vu, parents are strongly encouraged to partner with the school. One way to do that is to use their Edline accounts and regularly check their students' grades on Edline (Edline.net). Know what your student is doing well, and what s/he needs help with...and follow up with him or her daily. Parents can also keep aware of assignments and other important class-related issues through the "Calendar," "News," and "Content" sections on individual class Edline pages. All students received an orientation in August about the use, and usefulness, of this online program; students can also assist their parents in utilizing their accounts. Grades for each class are updated on Edline on the first and fifteenth of each month, and they can be reviewed at each class' home page in the "Grade Reports" folder under "Contents"; or from "My Content" on the left side of the page in the "Private Reports" section. |
