Greetings!
John Keats (1795-1821)
TO AUTUMN.
1.
SEASON of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think warm days will never cease,
For Summer has o'er-brimm'd their clammy cells...
Prior to my life as a principal, I made a small living peddling my ideas as an English and Art History teacher. In graduate school I became a hopeless Romantic, and that increased exponentially with my attendance and participation in KAIROS. 'Tis the season, right? It is that time of year where the leaves and weather change-something foreign to my family, as we migrated north to the central coast. I love this simple ode because it talks about the quieter activities of daily observation and appreciation. It is at the end of the first quarter, at the transition between the fall and winter seasons of sport, at a time when seniors are frantically applying to college and completing their KAIROS paperwork, that I can stop to both observe and talk with students. They are fascinating. They can sleep with their eyes open, laugh out loud for unexpected reasons, argue passionately about a world topic or whether the Giants will pull off another miracle, and they do it all with a love for their school and each other that is not matched. Despite the coming chill of winter, the late warmth of autumn at St. Francis has given me ample beauty to celebrate: we have amazing students who are absolutely happy and very successful; we have the most qualified and caring staff out of any high school in California; and, the parent and community support we have is unmatched. Right now, as I prepare for a Finance Committee meeting and Senior Night for volleyball, I can observe and appreciate with great joy...that it is good to be a SHARK!

Stand Up to Cancer
Helping Maestra Medina
Dear Family and Friends: On Sunday, December 9, 2012, Ms. Stephany Marks will be running the Tucson "Stand Up to Cancer" Marathon in honor of our dear friend and co-worker, Ms. Kate Medina. Some of you may know Kate as a close friend and others may know her better as "Maestra," our amazing Spanish teacher at Saint Francis High School. Most importantly, Kate is known as wife to Luis and "Mom" to Sophie and Isabel.
A few weeks ago, Ms. Medina began complaining of stomach pain, and after several doctors visits and a CT scan, she was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. The next day, Ms. Medina was admitted to the hospital and started her journey to recovery. Life as she knew it changed in an instant. Regardless, Ms. Medina, as she always does with challenges, is facing her cancer head on; she is determined to beat it. "Bring it on!" she says!
If you would like to help Ms. Medina by sponsoring Ms. Marks in running the marathon, we would so appreciate it. I realize that this is a tough economic time for many of us--if you are not able to financially contribute, we know that Ms. Medina feels equally supported by you as you keep her and her family in your prayers during this difficult time. In the meantime, go and visit the website and Ms. Marks will keep running like a maniac! Wish her luck on the 26.2 miles for Maestra Kate! ¡Gracias a todos! Ms. Stephany Marks.

Sharks Too Much for the Hawks of Mount Madonna.

Volleyball Action
Coming off Homecoming Week and a big win for Coach Hazel's football team, the Sharks' volleyball team met the Hawks of Mount Madonna in SCCAL action. Both the junior varsity and varsity St. Francis teams dominated with solid defense. The varsity team was led by senior defensive specialist Nina Odegaard, with key middle blocks by junior Sabrina Bargetto and thunderous hits by senior Regina Webb. Outside hitter Webb was also turned loose to jump serve, which proved to be too much for the Hawks. St. Francis celebrated Senior Night on Thursday, October 26, honoring Regina Webb, Nina Odegaard, Kim Hammill, Jennifer Eiskamp, and Clare Arbios, at the last SCCAL home game of the season.

Proven Tool for Academic Excellence!
Daily Tutorial
 A critical tool to academic success for students is wise use of the daily "Tutorial" sessions from 2:10 until 3:00 pm. During this period, teachers are in their classrooms and available for individualized help and enrichment. What's more, no extracurricular activities may begin prior to 3:15 PM (e.g., athletic team practices, club meetings, etc.). This will enable every student to attend tutorial without a conflict with another school activity. Students are not required to attend tutorial session. However, all are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity, especially those students who feel they need extra help from a teacher. |
