Fellowship
Month

Greetings!

Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome.....Booker T. Washington

We want to engage you with more pictures!  (seems that's what our busy Orange Rotarians want)  so some changes were made to give you the fast read!.

Most sections will have an orange colored "Learn More" quick link after the end of each article, designed to give the reader additional information.

Words by Architect, Paul Nagashima, on the new Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton
AIA HDR Architecture

The natural environment and proximity to the Pacific Ocean provided great inspiration for the new Naval Hospital at Camp Pendleton. One of the main design goals was to integrate this large and important facility within the context of the greater Camp Pendleton Base.

The concept was to create a timeless building design and aesthetic which is  both contextual and embodies the character and resolve of the Navy and  the Marine Corps.

The main entry drive to the site was choreographed to provide simple, clear
way-finding and to heighten the sense of arrival, fitting of a landmark facility. The entry drive off of Vandegrift Boulevard traverses the slope of the site, gracefully winding its way up to the main entry to the hospital, marked by the great cantilevered metal cornice of the building.
There, one is welcomed by a generous canopy at the drop off plaza.
The exterior architecture is designed to capture the spirit of the Navy and Marines conveying order, discipline, integrity and honor. Buildings grow out of the ground on a base of natural stone.
The exterior is rendering in terra cotta panels, metal cladding and sun shades, as well as high performance glazing. The exterior palette was kept simple and basic, detailed and coordinated to present an exterior that is crisp, precise and enduring.
