Greetings!
 | Pres Ron Lacey
|
The Rotary mantra this year as usual is Every Rotarian, Every Year. That is
a wonderful attainable goal for us. We have done that for several years.
Let us take a few moments and refocus on our membership now. Each of us know people that would be great additions to our wonderful award winning club.
However, I am not asking you to approach them. See, you can breathe a sigh of relief.
All I am asking is that when You see the paper on the table that says "WHO
DO YOU KNOW THAT WOULD MAKE A GOOD ROTARIAN" just jot their name and
contact info on that sheet and turn it in. Our committee will take on thejob of contacting them and inviting them for lunch with us. 7 different members have recently told me we used to be a 150 member club.
I do not believe we are a "used to be" club! Do you? So, help us by filling those papers with as many good possibilities as you can think of. We will take over and do the job.
You are all great. Let's share this opportunity with others as well. I am so proud of you and believe more people will enjoy this Rotary experience. Thank You! Ron

Today's Program: Gene Dick
Seaman Apprentice USS Oklahoma BB37 Dick was a hospital apprentice working sick bay duty on the third deck the morning of Dec. 7, 1941. The battleship USS Oklahoma was torpedoed four times, as water poured through the damaged hull, the ship started to roll, Seaman App Gene Dick found himself trapped with hundreds of his shipmates underwater. Before the early morning raid, "my thought was there was safety on the third deck. But that's where the first four torpedoes hit," Dick said. An air pocket allowed a group of men to hold on, and it took five hours to work open a porthole, which was too narrow for most of the men, Dick said. Only five were able to squeeze through. To pass, Dick raised one arm above him, and held the other tightly to his body to work his shoulders through. "Some knew they were too fat. They helped us out, pushed us," he said. "They stayed behind [429 Marines and sailors perished on the ship that day]. After the attack, Dick, who stayed in the Navy for a 22-year career, knew he had served on the Oklahoma, but remembered little else. Dick has lived with post-traumatic stress syndrome for the last 68 years.

YOUR ROLE IN ROTARY Thanks for your continued support of the Rotary Foundation. Over half of the Orange Rotary Club members have already completed their commitment for the 2012-2013 year. By the end of March we hope to reach our goal of 100% support of the Every Rotarian Every Year program. As Governor Jim Lorman has said: "To support our Foundation there is no donation of time and resources too small. Each contributes to result in an ocean of help for humanity." You can complete your donation by check payable to The Rotary Foundation or by credit card.
The Rotary Foundation is geared up to implement Rotary's New Vision plan beginning in July 2013, with 6 defined areas of focus:
1. Peace and conflict prevention/resolution 2. Disease prevention and treatment 3. Water and sanitation 4. Maternal and child health 5. Basic education and literacy 6. Economic and community development Each week we'll take a look at one of these areas of Focus.
Peace and conflict prevention/resolution
The Foundation enables Rotarians to promote the practice of peace and conflict
prevention/ resolution by:
1. Training leaders, including potential youth leaders, to prevent and
mediate conflict
2. Supporting peace-building in communities and regions affected by
conflict
3. Supporting studies for career-minded professionals related to peace and
conflict prevention/resolution

Urgent Plea from Dist Gov Jim Lorman

Rotary District 5320 Global Grant Scholarships, 2013-14
The Global Grant Scholarship, formally known as the Ambassadorial Scholarship is the crown jewel of the Foundation of Rotary International. In the world of academia it is looked upon as a most generous and prestigious scholarship program If we are to follow in the history of such recipients as Paul Volker, former chair of the Federal Reserve, Bill Moyers TV Journalist and more recently Lt. Anthony Lupo, graduate of the U. S. Military Academy and now serving in Pakistan as an intelligence officer, we need your help now. Despite the fact that we sent you a letter back in November outlining the program and your challenge we have as yet heard nothing from you ... We have no applicants! Your sources for candidates are your members (no relatives are allowed), their friends and associates who know of university graduating seniors and members of academia of your membership o acquaintance. We ask that you Presidents and leaders put you prestige on the line with your club and immediately make this a major project of your club. Please send applications, questions or requests for assistance to H.W. "Herb" Trumpoldt, Scholarship Committee Chairman @ 4711LibraPlace, Yorba Linda, CA 92886, oryorbaherb@earthlink.net. In the interests of Rotary's goal of Building World Peace and Understanding through education, we ask your help. Yours in Rotary Service, Jim Lorman |
