Greetings!
During the long 20 day break, many of you had the opportunity to visit family or relatives a far, help with a local community project , take a mini vacation, or just enjoy the spirit of holidays. If Santa Claus was kind to you for your good works within Rotary, and just happened to leave a shiny new IPad or Tablet under the tree...congratulations! You just entered into a completely new mobile computing universe. Now, getting this toy is one thing, but using it is another. If you are interested in getting more out of your device, as many of you are, I am suggesting a informal group meeting once a month, that may work out for the majority of you. Should this be of interest, please see me! ...Glenn Chitjian E-Newsletter Publisher Note: Added a link to view past Orange Rotarian newsletters... see under quick links |

Dear Rotarians,
Happy New Year again our fellow Rotarians.
We are starting off the new year full of optimism for the wonderful opportunities to serve our great community or Orange.
Our Board of Directors meets for the first time this year this evening. We will be reviewing our goals, and planning to make the most of this next six months to finish our year in a big way.
We have a line up of impressive speakers and programs for you. Our suggestion to you is to try and make each meeting the most important memo on your daily scheduling diary. You are great, our Rotary club is great! Thank you for making it so!.

WHAT IS THE PAUL HARRIS SOCIETY?
Next Monday evening PAUL HARRIS SOCIETY members will be honored at the District 5320 President's Dinner. The SOCIETY recognizes friends of The Rotary Foundation who annually contribute $1,000 or more to the Annual Programs Fund, PolioPlus, and other approved Foundation grant activities.
Currently eleven Orange Rotarians are members of the Paul Harris Society: Jean Abdalla, Dr. Mike Abdalla, John Fonley, Joe Fortier, Jim Lorman, Bob McAulay, Wayne Miller, Warren Parchan, Tito Parola, Don Saltikov, and Steve Smith.
Also honored at the President's Dinner next Monday will be the 2012 recipient of the 2012 DOCTOR MICHAEL ABDALLA AWARD
Gifts from the Paul Harris Society help to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.
Specific projects will be outlined in a future issue of the ORC newsletter.
This annual award was created in Dr. Mike's name for Humanitarian Service that was done the previous year by a Rotarian in District 5320, selected by the district directors. The award was created because of the work that Dr. Mike did in El Salvador through grants received from the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. He served in El Salvador 9 times and developed a clinic at the National Hospital in the city of Santa Ana (the 2nd largest city in the country) where they are now making artificial legs (prosthetics) for below the knee amputees, with custom made sockets on site for less that $80. A similar leg would cost over $600 in this country.
Orange Rotary is blessed to have so many dedicated members who exemplify Service Above Self. We begin the second half of the 22012-2013 year with over one-half of our members having turned in their Foundation Commitments. With the Every Rotarian Every Year campaign well under way this year Orange Rotary will continue to lead the District in Foundation support for Rotary's effort to help solve problems worldwide.
In coming weeks we will recognize members who have become new Paul Harris Fellows and several who have reached the next level of support as a Paul Harris Fellow. John Burt, ORC's RI Foundation Chair |

Rotary condemns attacks targeting polio vaccinators in Pakistan
By Robert S. Scott,
chair of the International PolioPlus Committee
Rotary International joins the Government of Pakistan and our partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in condemning the recent attacks that have killed and wounded health workers in Pakistan.
The shooting victims are among the thousands of health workers and volunteers - including members of Pakistan's 151 Rotary clubs - who are committed to saving children by stopping the transmission of polio in Pakistan, one of three countries where the crippling virus remains endemic.
The attacks prompted the Government of Pakistan to temporarily suspend the vaccination campaign due to concerns over the safety of health workers.
Rotary is deeply concerned that such attacks deprive at-risk children of basic life-saving health care services, including polio vaccinations. I know that Pakistani Rotarians, supported by Rotary members worldwide, will continue to do their utmost to create a safe environment so that these dedicated health workers can reach the nation's most vulnerable children with vaccinations and other vital health interventions.
Polio eradication has been Rotary's highest priority since 1985, and we are on the brink of making history by beating polio once and for all.
On behalf of Rotary's 1.2 million members, representing 34,000 clubs in 200 countries and areas, I extend our deepest sympathy to the families of the victims. Their dedication and sacrifice further inspire us to continue moving forward toward our goal of a polio-free world.
