    President Ron's Weekly Message

It is true that the eyes of the world are watching to see who will be the winner of the Presidential campaign.  Who our country decides to be the next term's president  will set the course for our great nation's future. November 6, 2012, an important date, perhaps even history making.

The result of that election is important. However, regardless who wins, life still goes on. Our community still has hungry, and homeless children, our teachers still need innovative grants so they can do the creative teaching as we have seen in the past. Our neighborhoods still need our help.  Internationally, children, women and families still need help getting clean water to drink, and food to eat.  Orphans and cast away children still need your help.

Our fundraiser is now just 17 days away.  Less than 18% of you have responded with your reservations to the Rotary Rawhide Roundup.   Our venue is pressing us for an accurate count of how many will be coming.  Please,  drop your ticket reservation check by our registration desk, mail it in, or even better go click this line and it will take you to the online registration page. How easy is that!  Just click on the brown flyer and scroll down to the white form. Just chose the level of sponsorship you want to take part in, or below that how many tickets you want to buy. You can pay by check or credit/debit cards, and do it all on our secure website at one time.

Remember, most of you have friends that appreciate some "good ole country music", and we have the best coming, so invite them also. You will be glad, they will be glad, everyone will be glad! Cody Bryant and the Riders of the Purple Sage have played before Rotary Groups to rave reviews. They have played in concerts to thousands, and just a couple of weeks ago on the back lot for Jimmy Kimble. In fact they were enjoyed so much they were persuaded to play on for another half hour before getting off stage. Go to the web site or bring your reservation check or credit card to registration on Thursday.

Thank You!  Ron

How The Taliban Is Thwarting

Pakistan is one of the remaining corners of the world where polio still lingers. Last year, the government declared a national emergency, and with the help of international institutions, embarked on an aggressive vaccination campaign.

So far, the results have been promising. The number of new polio cases is about a third of last year's total of 198.

But the new campaign, like previous efforts, hasn't been able to overcome one critical problem: getting into parts of Pakistan's lawless tribal regions along the border with Afghanistan to vaccinate the children there.

About 75 percent of Pakistan's polio cases can be traced back to certain areas there, primarily FATA, the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, and neighboring Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Quetta, in Baluchistan, is also difficult to enter, says Pakistan's point person for polio, Shahnaz Wazir Ali.

The Taliban, al-Qaida and other Islamist groups are based throughout the region, and it's volatile and dangerous.

"This is a traditionally tribal society," Wazir Ali says. "And no one from outside can access those communities because of their very, very strict tribal laws."

"In certain areas, we have not been able to access children for more than three years because of military operations, because of the American drone strikes ... because of the reaction to what the Americans and other countries are doing in Afghanistan," Wazir Ali says.

In July, the Taliban flat-out banned any polio teams from entering North and South Waziristan until the U.S. drone attacks stopped.

Rumors about the polio vaccine are rife: It'll make the children sterile; it contains the AIDS virus; the vaccinators are really CIA agents
