What's New at Child's Play

  Enjoying an outdoor meeting and virtual reality at Kidscreen. 


February presented an interesting contrast in mood and wardrobe alike, as many of the same kids' industry members -- including Child's Play staff -- traveled straight from the single-digit climes of New York City and Toy Fair to the balmy breezes of Miami for the Kidscreen Summit. For those of us based in NYC, the somewhat dispiriting news that we would no longer have the convenience of attending Kidscreen in our hometown was quickly countered by the full 50-degree difference in temperature. Thank you, Florida.


The big news at Kidscreen, of course, was the launch of the YouTube Kids app. Beyond that, there was  much talk about how traditional TV audiences are down while streaming audiences are significantly up, the fact that new kids' VOD services are popping up regularly, and the changing definition of "TV."

Where will it all lead? Those homes with a TV set in each room may soon be hosting a major garage sale.

What's New at Toy Fair '15

At this point, I've lost track of the number of Toy Fairs I've attended -- 20? 25? -- yet the number never dulls that pre-event excitement about What's New--and What's Next?


At Toy Fair 2015, much of the talk centered around licensed products based on the upcoming versions of Star Wars and Jurassic Park, as well as the new Minions movie. "STEM" was this year's buzz word, although, if truth be told, some seemed to apply the term to products that didn't really seem to teach much of anything.
