Empower SVS

Empowering individuals through the measurement of personal change

Dear colleague,

Whilst the focus for the majority of work with individuals is now on the achievement of hard outcomes such as employment, qualifications or training, little attention is given to the personal journey people take to achieve that outcome.

The result is often that priority is given to those most likely to achieve a positive outcome - those who are job ready for example - as these individuals are likely to provide quick wins for service providers often paid by results.

Soft Outcomes can be defined as 'Changes in attitude or belief, knowledge or skill and/or behaviour'.

If someone believes with absolute certainty that they are unemployable, then their motivation to gain the appropriate skills and adopt positive behaviour is likely to be low.

The Soft Outcomes model encourages us to sit down with an individual at the outset of the intervention and establish their current attitudes and beliefs, their levels of knowledge and skill and assess their patterns of behaviour. Once this baseline has been established it is important to work with the individual to identify a series of goals towards an ultimate outcome agreed by both parties.

Measuring Soft Outcomes and Distances Travelled:
Training Date: 20th November 2012 - Abercynon, South Wales

Soft Outcomes, including targets such as raised aspirations or expectations or increased pride in the community, measure valuable benefits from projects and activities. Inherently complex to measure, we unpick the processes by which you are able to measure the real impact and benefit to individuals and communities.

Using recognised tools and common sense we seek to formalise targets which involve personal change among both the individual and whole communities.
