Project Management Master Class
using Results Based Accountability
As grant funding becomes more demanding and delivery of services under contract involves overcoming a series of hurdles in addition to delivering benefits, managing projects is now an essential skill.
Reconciling Multiple Customers' Needs:
Any project which has funded delivery is likely to have several cusotmers each with a different view of what success looks like.

A customer is someone who:
1. Will legitimately put requirements upon the project.
2. Will enjoy the benefits of the project once it is complete.
3. Has a formal role in judging the success of a project once it is complete.

The challenge for the project manager is to ensure the requirements of all customers are met, but that perceptions are kept real.
Establishing a common view of what project success looks like:
Project success involves delivering the targets within a given timeframe and within a given budget. Doesn't it?

The answer is yes and no. With the increased emphasis on outcome focussed delivery we find that different customers place different values on the scope of a project.

A mentoring project for example may be judged on the number of young people who have benefited (achieved positive outcomes). But for the young person a positive outcome may be defined way beyond the definitions of the project.
Establishing a baseline using Results Based Accountability:

If projects are going to be outcome focussed and deliver not simply individual benefits but also benefit communities it is essential to accurately assess statistically the position as it currently is. And, as important is the reason for the problems: The Story Behind The Baseline.
Project Managing the change process:

When faced with problems within a project, most project managers have a favourite tool in their toolbox (a preferred way of responding).

The change control process enables the Project Manager to consider all the options first and then propose the most effective solution.

There are generally 8 options for changing something:
1. Change the way the team are working.
2. Change the resources on a project.
3. Change the scope of the project.
4. Add tasks to the project.
5. Change the plan or approach.
6. Change the quality of the deliverables of the project.
7. Take the decision to escalate.
8. Terminate the project.
