...It's Still Margarita Season

The 10 Best Margaritas In Chicago

A good margarita shouldn't be hard to make and yet at taquerias and restaurants across Chicago we've either been bombarded with margaritas that rely too heavy on pre-mix, are too salty, or make one's mouth pucker to the point where your face will freeze that way.

Following are 10 margaritas that rise above the sweet tart pucker norm across Chicago. Mark 'em down and start sampling; the weather is perfect for it.

Adobo Grill
Adobo is a good place to get food and sit and pass the time while waiting to see some comedy at Second City. It's also a really good place to be if you like tequila. And I really do. The Adobo margarita is well crafted, and can become a real thing of beauty if you go exploring the extensive list of anejos and reposados. Any time I've gone I've found myself in good hands when wanting to explore the world of tequila. You can also add a mezcal floater to your margarita for a bit of a smoky twist. And if you're feeling saucy after a few margaritas, try out the Corazon de Sangria with its fresh watermelon juice, great for a hot summer evening. -Marielle Shaw

Adobo Grill Old Town is at 1610 N. Wells St.

Matchbox
I believe The Matchbox makes the best margarita in Chicago and I will accept no argument to the contrary. The tiny River West tavern keeps their recipe simple, with tequila, Cointreau, fresh lime juice and a teaspoon of egg white added as an emulsifier. The mix is shaken and served in a martini glass with a powdered sugar rim and lemon zest. Regardless of the weather conditions, this concoction will have you dreaming of sandy beaches and tasty waves. - Chuck Sudo

The Matchbox is located at 770 N. Milwaukee Ave.

Big Star
Big Star is rightfully at the top of many "best-of" lists. Their food is outstanding, the music selection great, the patio is always top notch, and the bourbon selection is stellar. The thing that keeps me coming back, though, is their margaritas. Yes, the classic margarita is wonderful, but the one to try is the "Big Star Margarita." With the addition of Del Maguey Vida Mezcal, the margarita has a more complex, smoky flavor that is perfect with Big Star's food. The lime crisis we experienced earlier in the year made Big Star raise prices on their margaritas. Now that the lime pricing has gone down, maybe we can see the prices roll back?- Paul Leddy

Big Star is located at 1531 N. Damen Ave.

El Cid 2
This Logan Square mainstay's margaritas are best consumed by the pitcher. Stick to the classic lime flavor, or add some color with the fruit-forward varieties-strawberry, raspberry, mango or tamarind. Come with a group on a nice evening and grab a table on the restaurant's ample back patio, raise a glass and say salud to Chicago's short, spectacular summers.- Chris Bentley

El Cid 2 is located at 2645 N. Kedzie Ave.

Frontera Grill
It's no secret that Rick Bayless is the man and we Chicagoans will never stop singing his praises. When it comes to the quintessential margarita, just stop by any one of his restaurants. The recipe is simply perfect: fresh squeezed lime juice that incorporates the round flavor of lime oil, quality tequila and a salted rim. They're delicious, they're refreshing and they come in a small glass for $10. Trust, it's worth it.
- Erika Kubick

Frontera Grill is located at 445 N. Clark St.

Cesar's
Lakeview's "home of the killer margaritas" means business when it comes to the punch those drinks pack. Similar to nearly any of the bars and restaurants along Clark between Belmont and Addison, it won't take long before you slide out of Cesar's with a nice buzz going for yourself. The difference though is that the margaritas here taste much better than the $10 mystery punch fishbowls you can get up the street. You can't go wrong with the classic lime or strawberry flavors on the rocks but we even appreciate some of the more adventurous blended options at Cesar's like banana or the current seasonal option blood orange with passion fruit and pomegranate. - Katie Karpowicz

Cesar's has two locations located at 3166 N. Clark and 2924 N. Broadway.

Zapatista
Back in the early days of Chicagoist we organized a staff dinner at this South Loop mainstay and the margaritas here were flowing like a flooded river. The "La Mamacita" here is still one of my favorites, a blend of Herradura silver tequila, natural agave nectar, fresh-squeezed lemon and lime juice and fresh prickly pear. It makes for a nice twist on the traditional margarita recipe and is largely free of processed sugars. - Chuck Sudo

Zapatista is located at 1307 S. Wabash Ave.

Don Juan's Restaurante
This Edison Park Mexican restaurant is one of the best-kept secrets in Chicago for its amazing, hand-crafted menu. The margaritas are on par with the food, whether you're opting for traditional, strawberry, mango or Gold. The margaritas are on special here Mondays and Metra has a station steps from Don Juan, so you can get back to the city safely without having to drive the Edens expressway. - Chuck Sudo

Don Juan's is located at 6730 N. Northwest Hwy.

Nana Organic
The popular Bridgeport restaurant is best known as one of the best brunch spots in Chicago but they also serve an amazing dinner menu. Whether you're dining here when the sun is up or setting, order one of their margaritas, made with fresh-squeezed lime, or get a twist on the cocktail with the addition of hibiscus. Margaritas here are $5 on Thursdays. - Chuck Sudo

Nana Organic is located at 3267 S. Halsted St.

Flaco's Tacos
When it comes to my margarita preference, I tend to lean more towards the blended variety because when it is hot in Chicago, I can think of no better escape than sitting on a patio sipping down a frosty frozen beverage. I like a little alcohol infused brain freeze with my humidity during the summer. A blended drink can go horribly wrong though, big chunks of ice, too watery, flavors that don't hold as they melt. Thankfully Flaco's Tacos has perfected their frozen margarita making and you can grab a cold one at one of their three Chicago locations. The blend is a perfect consistency, I've always been amazed at how long it takes them to melt and I've always gotten a smooth flavor that still packs a nice punch of tequila. And on Monday their house margaritas are just $4 a pop, the perfect cure or celebratory drink to the start of a new week. For the other sweet tooths out there, they offer a variety of flavors including a delicious peach, mango and strawberry. I like to pair a few rounds with a shared order of their super crispy nachos. - Lisa White

Flaco's Tacos has three locations in Chicago at 725 S. Dearborn St, 46 E. Chicago Ave and 3530 N. Clark St.

Dear Women of St. Luke Parish,

Welcome back to school season!  Good luck on all the transitions, school related and not, that come with this time of the year!

We are happy to kick off our 4th year as the St. Luke Women's Club board!  We have been honored to serve the community and are also ready to hand off the torch.  We have a great set of ladies that will be announced shortly who have stepped up to take over the reigns.  Some of us will still be part of the board this year as the new board transitions.

As a reminder, last year we also amended who is a member of St. Luke Women's Club.  ALL WOMEN PARISHIONERS will be considered members.  We will ask for yearly dues from every member.  This will be asked as a donation to help support our events and initiatives for the year.

We are looking for volunteers to help with bringing treats to the Ministry Fair on Sunday, September 21st.  Please contact Noreen Leavy if you can help - [email protected] or 708 404 0556.

We've included our State of the Club Address which sums up last year.  We rely on your support and help, both financially and physically, to achieve these goals.  We can't THANK YOU enough for your continued support.

Lastly, our Kick Off Event this year 'Cabaret & Cocktails' will be held Friday, October 24th in Waldron Hall so mark your calendars now.  There will be great music featuring The Szurko Trio, finger foods, drink, music, shopping vendors and an awesome raffle!!!

It's an honor to serve the magnificent and dynamic women of the St. Luke parish.

Warmest Regards,

Noreen Leavy

STATE OF THE CLUB ADDRESS:

SLWC 2013-2014

The St. Luke Women's Club (SLWC) mission statement:

"Our mission is to nurture and strengthen the relationships among the full spectrum of women in St. Luke Parish in an effort to better serve both the social and spiritual needs of our parish community, as well as other worthy causes."

Our desire is to build membership by having fun with friends and by developing new friendships with St. Luke Parish women through active participation in a series of events, activities and club initiatives throughout the year.

MEMBERSHIP Amended
: ALL women of the parish are considered members of the SLWC. Everyone will be asked to pay an annual fee to help us off set costs incurred throughout the year.

We would also like to continue to serve the needs of our Parish in the following ways:

  • Create a calendar of wide range of interesting events for the year
  • Coordinate meals for any SLWC member and family during times of need
  • Provide an Honor Guard (upon request) at the Funeral Mass celebrated at St Luke for any SLWC member or a member of their immediate family - PLEASE CONTACT A BOARD MEMBER IF INTERESTED IN HAVING AN HONOR GUARD AT ST. LUKE.
  • Recognize all women of the parish on Mother's Day (beautiful Mary prayer card passed out at all masses on Mother's Day weekend)
  • Actively participate in "Coffee on the Plaza" and "Pack the Pews" parish initiatives
  • Help to facilitate a group creative effort which will enhance our parish, all suggestions and ideas are welcome
  • In the spirit of giving back, the St Luke Women's Club will present and donate $100 to 3 different areas - ideally one donation each to St. Luke Religious Ed Program, St. Luke School and St. Luke Parish.

With that being said, this is what we accomplished with YOUR help:

Events and Initiatives...

FALL:

  • We participated in Coffee On the Plaza at Ministry Fair Sunday, September 22, 2013. And coordinated the Anne Smedinghof Crocus Bulb Sale.
  • On, November 1st we hosted a terrific kick off event, "Edible Event", with bites to eat from all over the world.  Old School provided the food, Angie's Pantry donated the dessert.  Awesome raffle, food and bev included.

WINTER:

  • On Tuesday, December 3rd we hosted an Advent Retreat - Not Just For Children hosted by Christine Ondrla
  • On Thursday, December 19, 2013 we celebrated with the Men AND Women of St. Luke at Healy's for a Christmas gathering.  Food and beverage were on tab of the clubs, until about 11, then it turned into a cash bar.  It was a great time to stop in and wish your friends a Merry Christmas season!
  • On January 30, 2103 we had a riot with baker/comedian Bertha Mason.  He/she showed us a good time and how to make some delicious pies.  We also had samplings of a bunch of Bertha's delicious pies.
  • We supported the Annual St. Luke Dinner Dance by sponsoring an ad.

SPRING:

  • During Lent, the SLWC was asked by the Peace and Justice Committee to help sponsor a Simple Supper during one of the Friday nights in Lent after Stations of the Cross.  We were happy to help donate food and help with the set up and clean up of the nice evening.
  • In April several volunteers from St. Luke stepped up and helped SLWC member Cynthia Maroon and Misericordia Homes by participating in their fundraiser - Misericordia Candy Days.  Once again year they far exceeded their donation goals and couldn't be more thrilled and grateful to their volunteers!
  • We also tried to host a "Pack the Pews" honoring our Blessed Mother in May, the night before Mother's Day.  This is always a wonderful night devoted to Mother Mary.  Well over 100 parishioners enjoy the evening of delicious foods and Marian crafts and treats!  With Easter falling so late in the year, many activities fell on that weekend and we needed to cancel, but will have it this year!
  • Additionally in May, we provided laminated prayer card bookmarks to all the women of St. Luke parish on Mother's Day weekend masses.  They were really beautiful with a special Mother's Day prayer.

SUMMER:

We wanted to have twilight golf outing.  Also researched idea of having smaller food truck rally.  Both of these ideas never came to fruition.

Ongoing efforts...

  • We were able to show our support and love to some families this year by providing an honor guard at there loved one's funeral mass at St. Luke.  If you ever know of someone who may be interested in having this done at St. Luke church, please notify us.
  • We were also able to get a couple of meal calendars coordinated for families in need of meals.
  • At the suggestion of a SLWC member, we continue to send mass/sympathy/encouragement cards and to any member of SLWC that has lost a loved one or is recovering from an illness.
  • We sent good cheer throughout the year as we felt needed - a card/candy/flowers for sick or injured
  • We send out a monthly newsletter to keep everyone connected and informed.
  • We added a feature two years ago in newsletter - called The Bulletin Board.  We can't put everything every member supports in the newsletter, but would like to support when we can, so this would be where you would ask us to run something you are involved in and need support, a race, or if you are looking for recommendations, or have babysitter needs, or your son or daughter is ready to be a babysitter and you want to get the word out, or you have a nice set of bunk beds you are ready to give away, etc.
And to sum up the year, in the spirit of giving back and we try to give back to school, parish, religious education program

THANK YOU for your support!!  We had another ambitious year and were able to accomplish it with ALL of your support.
