Seeking Fulfillment in a Season of
Great Expectations
An Advent Reflection
The Advent Season is a time for our spiritual preparation for the Celebration of Jesus' birth at Christmas. Yet in these four short weeks, it is sometimes difficult to quiet ourselves and allow the Lord into our hearts. The culture in which we live often takes control: which presents to buy, which parties to throw, which goodies to prepare, even which charities to support. As we make our way through Advent, Father John Szmyd has prepared a special program of prayer and reflection to help us stay on the path of spiritual preparation for the celebration of our Lord's Incarnation. Come join us!
Two opportunities to attend this adult faith formation program will be offered.
Please choose the time that is most convenient for you!

CRAIN'S CHICAGO
By Ally Marotti
Though the ice rink at Wrigley Field won't open this winter due to renovation work at the park, skaters have a couple of new options this year.
Starting this weekend, skaters can take to the ice at a chicken restaurant or on an ice ribbon, where they can deviate from the traditional rink model and glide through pine trees. And if eating chicken while you skate doesn't suit your fancy, many of Chicago's veteran and traditional outdoor rinks have already opened for the season.
NEW THIS YEAR
Parson's Chicken & Fish 2952 W. Armitage Ave.
Starting Dec. 12, patrons of this restaurant will be able to ice skate while they eat. The rink will be on the restaurant's outdoor patio and will cost $5, including skate rental, said Michael Trow, general manager of Parson's. About 30 skaters will be allowed on the rink at a time, and a special menu will be served during rink hours. Parson's opened in May 2013; this is its first rink.
Hours: Friday: 3 p.m. to midnight Saturday: 10 a.m. to midnight Sunday: 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Maggie Daley Park Ice Ribbon 337 E. Randolph St. The rink will be on the north side of the park, bordered by East Randolph Street and South Columbus Drive.
A pine tree-lined ice skating path is expected to open Dec. 13 at 11:30 a.m. and will allow skaters to glide past landscaping and a climbing wall-a deviation from the typical oval-shaped rink. The ice ribbon will be the first part of the new Maggie Daley Park to open to the public and will be free to skaters. On-site skate rental is $12; rental is free on opening day.
Hours: Monday-Thursday: Noon to 8 p.m. Friday: Noon to 10 p.m. Saturday: 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. (After Jan. 4, it will close at 9 p.m. Saturdays) Sunday: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Holiday hours: Christmas Eve: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Christmas Day: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. New Year's Eve: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Martin Luther King Day (Jan. 19) and Lincoln's Birthday (Feb. 12): 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Dec. 26-30 and New Year's Day: 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Hours:
Monday-Thursday: Noon to 8 p.m.

Please keep the following special intentions in prayer:
- Meg Sullivan suffered brain injury from a fall. She is making amazing strides everyday. Meg and their family need many prayers and support as she continues to progress with her recovery. School lunches, christmas decorations and care for the boys have been addressed. A dinner schedule has been set up through Lotsa Helping Hands (click here for directions). The entire Sullivan and Gazzolo families are overwhelmed with appreciation and gratitude for the outpouring of the love, prayers and support they have received thus far.
- Ann Marie Wojcik had a procedure performed on her brain earlier this month and has asked for our continued prayers.
- Annette Vincent has asked for special prayers for her brother, Raymond Ginepro, who is facing cancer.
- For our world, federal, state and local leaders; help them to listen closely to the Holy Spirit and make the best decisions for peace, justice and equality.
- For all of our family and friends, that recently have had surgery, been hospitalized, receiving treatments or fighting illness. We wish and pray for healthy and quick recoveries.
- We pray for all affected by cancer, and that collaborative efforts of research are brought together to gain a better understanding for cures, treatments, and early detection of cancer.
- For our dear family members and friends who are facing hardships with financial, relationships, or health issues. Continue to bring them hope, comfort, strength and God's light every day.
- For the gift of the Advent season and the joy of Jesus, Our King.
- For God's light, mercy, tender comfort and forgiveness in our darkest and most fragile moments.
- For the special intentions in our hearts
Our heartfelt condolences to all who have recently lost a beloved family member or friend of St. Luke Parish:
May the souls of
John R. O'Connor
Eileen Hopkins
Kathleen (Buoniconti) Vom Brack
rest in peace.
"Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen."

Our deepest sympathies go out to our SLWC members who have recently lost a loved one. Please keep them and their families in your prayers.
