Dear Women of St. Luke Parish,

The snow finally came down!  Let's just hope that it doesn't stay too long and that Spring is truly around the corner.

March is here and with it comes Lent, March Madness, Easter, St. Patrick's Day,  National Women's History, Nutritional Month, and Red Cross Month among some other silly days to celebrate in March (see side column).

Are you ready for St. Patrick's Day??  Women AND men are invited to a fun night at Molly Malone's on Wednesday, March 13th from 7-9.  Teacher, Sarah Dolan, of Maiden Street School of Dance will be teaching us the jig.  Bring your husband, a friend, or your mailman. It should be a riot. $20 per person.  See more details below.

This month the St. Luke's community lost a sweet friend, Cathy McMahon. The SLWC was able to provide an honor guard for the family. The family was touched and extend their deep appreciation to the SLWC and community.

What is an honor guard?  The SLWC provides an honor guard at funerals held at St. Luke church for immediate family members of SLWC members. The honor guard is formed by people holding candles (and in this case, flowers donated by friends of the family) either outside the church, in the vestibule, or all the way into the church along the pews, as the family enters the church.  It really depends on the number of people attending the funeral mass.  It is meant to act as a sign of love and support to the family.  If you are at the funeral mass, please join in!   If you are interested in helping with an honor guard or would like us to coordinate one for a funeral mass, please contact one of us.

Misericordia Candy Days are coming up and once again we are encouraging people to volunteer for a time slot to get out on the streets to collect money for this worthy cause, with close ties to many community members and the Archdiocese of Chicago. Please see below for more details.

Finally, if you have a talent that you'd like to share with the SLWC, please let us know and we can see what we can do about creating an event out of it!!

Have a glorious Easter!

Thank you for your continued support.

Warmest Regards,

Hot Off the Press...

Two couples from St. Luke Parish, Paul and Clare Faherty and Terry and Renee Norton, took an incredible 71.5 mile pilgrimage throughout Spain last year.  The Wednesday Journal highlighted their journey:

AND...

Hats off to Lauretta Froelich for playing a large role in the inception and coordination of the recent conference,
"Freedom in Christ:  Breaking the Chains of Addictions".  Lauretta said it was a huge success, so much so that after a long day, everyone stayed late to listen to the last speaker who was running over on time!

Way to go SLWC members!!
We are so proud of your accomplishments!!!
Misericordia Candy Days

The Misericorida Candy Days are coming up!!
This year they will be Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27.  Anyone who volunteered last year will be contacted and asked to help out again.  But we are always eager to have new volunteers as well.

Please contact
Cynthia Maroon:  [email protected] or
708-366-8133 to volunteer.

Moms and Dads working with their children are always welcome!  The children always collect far more money than the parents, of course, and it is a grand way to introduce them to the concept of volunteering and helping those who are more unfortunate.

If you are unable to get out there or donate on those days, please consider an online donation to some of our local friends at Misericordia:

Tip of the Month
Kitchen Tip: Baked Hard-Cooked Eggs

Yield: 12 hard-cooked eggs

Kitchen Tip: Baked Hard Cooked Eggs

Inspired by Alton Brown

Ingredients

  • 1 dozen eggs
  • 1 12-count standard muffin pan

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325. Place 1 dozen eggs in muffin pan. Bake 25-30 minutes (mine took 25, this will depend on your oven). Place eggs in a cold water bath until cool. Peel.

Notes

Some brown spots may appear on shells and whites from baking. The shells will wash off easily in the water bath. Any brown spots on the whites will remain.

I peeled my egg (pictured) straight from the water bath. Peeling results may vary after coloring or refrigeration.

*The fresher the eggs are the more difficult they are to peel no matter what cooking method you use. If your eggs are quite fresh, I recommend hard boiling them in water with 1/2t of baking soda for easier peeling.

Irish Humor

98-year-old Mother Superior from Ireland was dying.  The nuns gathered around her bed trying to make her last journey comfortable.

They tried giving her some warm milk to drink but she refused it.

One of the nuns took the glass back to the kitchen and remembering a bottle of Irish whiskey received as a gift the previous Christmas, she opened it and poured a generous amount into the warm milk.

Back at Mother Superior's bed, she held the glass to her lips.

Mother drank a little, then a little more and before they knew it, she had drunk the whole glass down to the last drop.

"Mother," the nuns asked with earnest, "please give us some wisdom before you die."

She raised herself up in bed and said, "Don't sell that cow!"

In Our Prayers

Please keep the following special intentions in prayer:

  • In thanksgiving for Pope Benedict XVI and all who have been called to religious vocations.  Let our hearts be forever grateful for the gifts they bring to the world.  And special blessings for the grace of the Holy Spirit on the process of choosing a new pope.
  • For Mrs. Norris (St. Luke Pre K teacher) and all our family and friends that recently have had surgery, been hospitalized or fighting illness.  We wish and pray for healthy and quick recoveries.
  • For the brave women in our past, that blazed trails we never thought we would see as women.  Bless and thank them and their perseverance and contributions to history and the future.
  • For all those facing addictions.  May they feel the merciful and healing love of God and all those who love them.
  • For the founders and volunteers of the Red Cross and all volunteer service organizations.  Bless them for their unyielding compassion and energy for those in need.
  • For our friend, Bob Lewis. Bob and his family will need our prayers and support for the next several months as he undergoes cancer treatments. Click here for more information.
  • For Kathleen O'Bryan Kurrle and family - May the grace, strength, hope, generosity, and love of God and our community be with them.  If you weren't able to attend the fundraiser, there is an opportunity to offer help to the family:  Click here for more information
  •  For our dear family members and friends who are facing hardships with financial, relationships, or health issues.  Continue to bring them hope, comfort, strength and God's light every day.
  • May we ask and feel the power of God's loving mercy, especially during the Lenten season.

Our heartfelt condolences to all who have recently lost a beloved family member or friend of St. Luke Parish.

May the souls of

Joan A. Davis and Charles Ganschow

rest in peace.

"Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen."
